It got a lot of major re-release, 1942, 1947, 1954, 1961, 1971, 1974, 1989, 1998, 2013, 2014, some of those were massive success.

yes but these rereleases can add up to 202 million adms? I doubt. I think BOM must have adjusted all these rereleases to 1939 ticket price which is unfair for films coming out later than GWTW.

Average ticket price in 1939 was around 23 cents, Gone with the wind is at 198,676,459 million domestic alone if they would have done that they would be over 860 million tickets sold, they probably made some effort for GWTW considered how much higher is ticket price were versus the average of the,  re-release factor and so on.

i don't think compared WW2 to a movie that 1st premiered back in 1939 is realistic, as so much things has changed, it's totally a different social structure and background. If really want to compare with, a movie in china that released in 1970 could outdone GWTW as yearly admission at china cinema stood at 29.3b

I do not think it is a so crazy figure. During 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, the attendance to movies was way bigger than now, and not only in US, but in many countries.

I do not have US numbers, but there are figures for United Kingdom, which is a similar market. Today, UK uses to sell about 150-170 million admissions per year. Between 1940 and 1956, UK was selling more than 1 billion admissions per year. The scenario will probably be the same in USA.

https://www.cinemauk.org.uk/the-industry/facts-and-figures/uk-cinema-admissions-and-box-office/annual-admissions/

The first numbers we have for Spain say that in late 60s we were buying about 300-350 million admissions yearly (10 admissions per person and year) when now we suffer to reach 100 million (barely 2 admissions per person). In the same way, France was selling 300s-400s million admissions during those years (http://www.jpbox-office.com/hebdof.php), and Germany was able to sell 500s-800s million admissions during the 50s, after the WWII (http://www.insidekino.de/DBO.htm#JAHRES_&_ALL-TIME_CHARTS_)

I do not know if that 202m figure is accurate, but I would not rule it out.

thanks. Now that makes sense. So theater attendance was really crazy high when TV was not around.

With less than 1/3rd the current population U.S. admissions were almost 3 times higher.  In 1930, weekly theater attendance was 80 million (with a population of 123m) - that's 4.1 billion a year.

In 1930, more than 65% of the population went to the movies weekly.  Now it's less than 10%.

The Great Depression and WWII were times when people truly needed the escape of movies.  Admissions started to decrease after that and plummeted with the advent of TV.

back then, the movie theater admission= cinema+TV+ internet nowadays, there is no way to compare.

movie that came after 1980, only rational enough to compare with

Why after 1980 and not after 2005, when downloads were generalized? We are talking just about theater attendance. Obviously there is not a fair comparison, whatever the year of each film. To talk about which film is more popular is, IMO, close to impossible.

i think WW2 is already the all time tickets seller in any territory in its original run.

Cause the top 5 in USA had several releases.

1984 is a year that things changed. Vcrs got cheap, below $200,  and everywhere was getting wired for cable (hbo). Ticket sales declined and then flattened for years.

Ticket sales imptoved in the 90s with an increasing population but then took another hit in the mid 2000s as you pointed out

70% of the population bought tvs in 1951 as they got cheaper and I Love Lucy was must see TV.  They soon after started playing older movies. Then widescreen was created.

So 51 84 and 04 were the big years of change
