Sunshine, Light, and Joy

This is a post that I've been thinking about for awhile. Recently, I opened up the discussion to other members of the staff to get their feelings on the matter, and their opinions generally matched mine, which is this:

Within the last year or so, there's been a steady increase of negative posts in movie threads. We've always had some heated discussions for some movies, but recently things have not only gotten more histrionic in those threads (generally speaking, the CBM ones), but they've started to spread to other franchises and other movies as well. I'm not talking about out-and-out trolling, I'm talking about members feeling they have to consistently shit on a movie (or studio, or star) simply because they aren't interested in the current project or projects. With every piece of news about a movie, it's now a virtual guarantee that there's a flood of people rushing to say they think it sucks, they don't like the current trailer/tv spot/actor/actress/director/concept. And I get it -- we all have movies we don't like, movies which we think are bad ideas, industry people that just don't appeal to us. But there's a fine line between expressing your opinion about this and doing it so often, with such consistency, that the collective emphasis of all of it basically brings down the entire thread and thus the entire forum.

There's no easy answer to this. We don't want to crush freedom of expression here. But at the same time, the spirit of this forum is for people to have fun talking about the movies they love and the box-office runs they love.

To have fun.

And while it may be fun -- in a sense -- to personally vent about a movie, or to vent at people who dare to enjoy something you don't, it doesn't bring fun to our community. In fact, it generally drags down the overall fun for everyone else. We've had people repeatedly mention to us over the last several months or so that in some cases they don't even bother going into some threads -- even for movies they're curious about! -- because they just don't want to deal with the overall mess those threads contain. And frankly, that matches the personal opinion of most of the staff as well.

So this post is both a request and a warning.

The request: Next time you feel like taking a dump on a movie (or a topic) for the dozenth time, take a moment to consider whether it's really worth it. People probably already have a good idea of what your attitude about the project is. Maybe just put your posting energy into a movie that you enjoy and love or are excited about.

The warning: The staff is going to be taking a closer look at some of these threads and we'll be more active with temp thread-bans if we think it'll help the overall vibe of the forum. I'd rather we don't have to, but it's not going to constrain any of you too much if you aren't allowed to post about a movie you supposedly don't care about anyway.

Remember the words of Bill and Ted: "Be Excellent to Each Other".

They're just movies, guys. It's about having fun.

I guarantee DC will have no patience to setup a cohesive universe like Marvel, if anything they will just try to patchwork together a JLA film as fast as they can. They may be able to get RR as GL and bring back Cavill as Supes. But I do not see them rebooting Batman, or having any other films that will tie in. In fact, it would not shock me at all if they completely start from scratch with all new interpretations of the members of the League. All I can say, is good luck DC, you're gonna need it. ;)

A JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie isn't happening and is an EPIC FAIL for the mere fact that NBC Cancelled WONDER WOMAN before the Pilot even aired and if this can't make it on TV, Then it's not making it on the Silver Screen.. Plus, GREEN LANTERN Was a BOMB and without those 2, forget it.. Can't have a JLA Movie with only SUPERMAN and BATMAN.. Plus, outside these 2, the rest of the characters suck and the audience wouldn't buy into this like they did for The AVENGERS, which the characters in this are more down to earth which is why the audience loves this movie and MARVEL characters more than DC and it's true..

Rumor has it that the Man of Steel will have an ending that will show something about a JLA movie. It will happen, eventually.

God, you are as boring and predictable as ever. And when will you ever learn to write English with somewhat decent punctuation and grammar?

I'll agree that part of the reason Avengers is so popular is that it did the solo movies 1st then brought the characters together. So many people who hadn't even seen any Marvel movies beyond Iron Man seemed more interested in the idea of a big crossover movie than they would have been if the team had been introduced together like Fantastic Four.

However Batman and Supes are definitely big enough names to create interest in a movie with them together, even if they aren't played by any of the same actors or part of the Nolanverse. It remains to be seen if Flash or WW could just suddenly appear to work with them. GL will be iffy due to the complete flop of the last movie and they probably wouldn't use RR.

Whatever they do at this point is going to be deemed copying Avengers, but a top notch script could make it a worthwhile movie, moreso than trying to reboot Batman again. Of course it's more likely to be a horrible mix match of concepts if they rush it into development right now.

I don't have a lot of confidence in this actually getting made. Don't fuck it up, WB.

They may do that, but that's still gonna be nothing like what Marvel did with IM>TIH>IM2>Thor>Cap>TA>IM3>Thor2>Cap2>TA2>Etc.Nolan aside, DC/WB has no balls to put their collective necks out like Marvel did and continues to. This is just Deja Vu, DC attempted to clone the Marvel formula with their comics in the early 70's and other than a few bright spots(Mostly by Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams), they failed until about 1986. This will be no different.

Well, I wish WB had it's own studio like Marvel studios doing specifically superhero movies, but they don't. I don't think WB was trying to compete in that department, because they make many other types of movies. And who said they would copy Marvel's formula? Nothing is set in stone.

I would pick Darren for the Batman reboot. I would put someone HUGE on the JLA movie, if possible. So that means Geoff Johns is out.

I don't think you need someone that is huge, look at The Avengers. Minus Darren these directors have ties with WB and Darren almost did Wolverine.

Nah. Whedon was anything but huge when he was chosen for TA. He was just a critically-loved but commercially-unproven working director who also happened to love comics.

Come on now. According to HSX, Justice League has been in development since 2007. Before Iron Man was a mere twinkle in Marvel's eye. Sure, the money Avengers made may have piqued interest in making this film happen more quickly but to say that they are just copying Marvel is hogwash.

Who are the three middle guys?

Murro director of 300: BoA and Matheiu directing a sci-fi movie for WB. Bodrov has directed Mongol and directing Seventh Son for WB. The first 2 have done critically acclaimed commercials.

Well Johns is much bigger than just a commercial director.
