  4. So let me get this straight. Someone noted what a historic year Disney is having at the box office and decided to make a little competition out of it and someone else in response to that said “stop staning corporations”. Never change, BOT, never change.

  10. Apparently the current cut of the film is pretty damn good from what I've heard so honestly I have faith wherever it gets placed. Depends also on marketing and what angle WB is going to target.

  11. There is always going to be competition. If you're good and better, you'll get rewarded. If you're dreck, you won't. If WW1984 is as big as you think it's gonna be the calendar is gonna empty around it on its own. As I look, I don't see anything big within two weeks on either end of it. That's as good as it's gonna get nowadays. I mean, look at the following schedule: BW will be in its SIXTH weekend and thus irrelevant. FF9 is in its third weekend, and so shouldn't be a problem. Unknown Pixar flick will be in WW1984's third weekend and is probably

  13. I'll say this about this Summer: while, so far, it feels like a complete wasteland of disappointment, the majority of wide releases that have come out in it have been successful: Obviously, it's very debatable whether you count Avengers: Endgame as a Summer movie or not, but if you do..... c'mon, it made nearly 8x its 356M production budget (the third biggest in history, only after Pirates 4 and, weirdly enough, Age Of Ultron), it's easily one of the most profitable films of all time; The Intruder, as one of the Screen Gems African American thrillers that follows the Blumhouse mod

  18. @excel1 if I may make an observation, you are WAY too obsessed with copying the "Marvel formula" exactly. And I do mean exactly. The truth of the matter is, IW/EG would have dominated anywhere on the calendar placement. Stick either of them in January for criminy's sakes and I doubt it would have mattered that much in the end. There is nothing magical about the last weekend of April/first weekend of May. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Zilch. That Marvel is dominating there with its movies is something of an accident of history but mostly just good planning on the

  23. Summary of 'right' and 'wrong' regarding this summer movie season so far: 1. Rocketman : everything went right before and after release. 2. DP : Reverse Rocketman 3. Aladdin : everything went wrong before release then suddenly everything went right after the release. 4. Godzilla : reverse Aladdin. 5. Pets 2 : nothing right or wrong. Just karma for making a sequel to forgettable movie. 6. MiB : same like Pets. It is what it deserves.

  24. It says something that a lot of the thrill I've been getting out of the box office recently has been watching all these ill-conceived franchise movies tank. And while I am looking forward to TS4, it's still lamentable that we're relying on a fourquel to avoid a complete catastrophe.

  25. Not sure who you are talking to, but I would like to add here one or two words. People, rich or poor, have every right to talk about politics on the internet. Censorship kills creativity and freedom of expression. Censorship is BAD. There is just no way to spin about. If 800 is banned, five years hard work of hundred of people for nothing, the producer could go bankrupt (they have already been in a really bad shape), hundred of workers would lose their jobs. Hundred of theaters will close due to continuous lack of quality supply. The whole film industry which is alread

  26. This newly heightened censorship situation is sad to hear, I was looking forward to The Eight Hundred (box office performance, not the movie itself). I don't think there's any reason to be happy that this might boost Hollywood film performances in the short term, since part of what make China box office so interesting to follow has always been the unpredictable break out of local hits, like WW2, Dying to Survive, Monster Hunt, Detective Chinatown, The Mermaid etc... This year, aside from TWE, the offerings are slim and with elevated censorship, it's not going to get better anytime

  27. Excellent Post. And it's not like this is a new thing. There's a reason we use terms like "WB Gangster / Noir Film" or "MGM Musical". Think the Studio System is NOW a "Corporate Assembly Line of Mass Produced Entertainment to Solely Make Profits"? Jack Warner says Hello. (Well, once he stops rolling over in his grave after what's gone down with the WB in the past couple years.) The 1970s and 1990s were like the ONLY times we really saw "independent" filmmakers and studios thrive in Hollywood.

  28. I don't get why people get so confused and angry over people liking or being fans movie studios or distributors, because there are decent reasons to do so. If they have franchises you like, frequently employ certain actors or directors, or just have a certain aesthetic, vibe or style that makes them stick out. Sure, I'd rather people be more supportive over studios like A24 or Blumhouse over Disney or Universal, and studio stans are arguably more annoying than most fandoms here, but I don't really see what's the big deal with people saying "Go Universal!" Using WB as an example, if

  33. Everyone in this thread, every one of you, is fighting for survival, and that's a fact. There's a comicbook horde out there massing for an attack. These orbital images tell me that the hostile numbers have gone from a few hundred, to well over two thousand in one day. And more are pourin' in. In a week's time there could be 20,000 of 'em. At that point they will overrun our perimeter. That's not gonna happen. Our only security lies in preemptive attack. We will fight terror with terror. The hostiles believe that this forum is protected by their... Avengers. And when we destroy it, we will blas

  34. Summer RT Update: Summer is off to a poor start, in terms of the ratio of Fresh versus Rotten films - only 7 Fresh films compared with 15 Rotten. However, 6 of the 7 Fresh films have 80% or more on the Tomatometer, and we have two films already with 8+ average ratings. Since 2016 (when I began tracking), the most films with 8+ average ratings occurred in the summer of 2017 (with 4 films achieving this feat). Can this summer tie or surpass this number? Toy Story 4 doesn’t open until next weekend, but it has solidified itself as the most critically acclaimed film of the summer so far

  36. I rewatched MIB this week and it's surprising how small scale the entire thing is. It feels huge but there's not a single huge action setpiece in it. The final action sequence is Will Smith screaming at a cockroach while stepping on other cockroaches. It ends with the iconic saucer crash but the actual action is very limited in scope in the movie.
