  1. Yeah any kind of “Disney deliberately tried to make Raya less successful because XYZ” is just frankly insane conspiracy nonsense. I don’t think there’s any need to mince words with such stupidity. It does seem like trying to get usual theater terms with a 0-day window is working out very very poorly for them, and they might have also botched marketing (I don’t actually know, I doubt I would see that much even if they did it great). Raya basically feels like it was sacrificed to find out that 0-day hybrid PA is not a great plan. Had to find that out eventually using a mo

  6. There's no way Disney would deliberately sabotage (as @MCKillswitch123 mentioned) a mega-budget movie that they already invested hundreds of millions of dollars into just because they don't think anyone would show up to a SE Asian-centered movie. If they truly thought that, the movie wouldn't have been made.

  9. It was pretty good, in fact there are times in it, it felt pretty great but then it get formulaic and cheesy. 6/10. One thing though, I get it Disney doing representations, but that representation is basically the looks of characters and overall setting. In the end they are basically American characters in "foreign faces" and "foreign clothes". Felt same for Mulan. I would have preferred watching that in Chinese with English subs. Here may be some SEA language.

  11. From Corpse: Unfortunately, Raya and the Last Dragon is a major bomb. It barely made the Top 10 (10th place) for Friday, only grossing around $40,000. It'll do better over the weekend since it skews younger/toward families, but it doesn't look like it has any chance of debuting in the Top 5 and might be closer to 10th than 5th (thinking ~8th right now). Even if it doubles up on Saturday and increases on Sunday, I don't see an opening much higher than $200,000 if it gets there. It's only playing in 244 locations (~30-40% less than the typical Disney release), largely due to Toho Ci

  17. A big part of this forum is using presales and early performances to see where a film is headed. It's not being a "drama queen" to accurately describe the numbers so far. Nobody is saying it's impossible for things to change but when you start very low the climb ahead becomes much harder. And btw this movie is factually already out. I also am rooting for this to do well, but the numbers are what they are.

  18. For the record, I don't wanna come across as a conspiracy theorist or anything, it's just something I saw being spread I believe on an outlet... or maybe it was just Twitter. Maybe it was foolish of me to believe, but it wouldn't really be the first time Disney did a stupid thing. Either way, I really hope more representation is to come, especially from Disney who are basically the gatekeepers for major mainstream animation.

  20. I thought this was fantastic. The animation is top notch and it looks incredible on screen. The worldbuilding and the action sequences are great too. The only thing I disliked was that it was too derivative of other properties (Avatar, Kill Bill, even Mononoke). Disney has a potential franchise in their hands with this

  21. Only a few weeks before Conjuring. Normally I'd be worried, but honestly theaters need anything they can get ASAP. I'm just worried that I will be unable to see it when it releases because I'm not sure whether theaters where I live will be open by the end of May.

  22. Got to admit, the only major films that I’m genuinely interested in this year are Dune, No Time to Die, Matrix 4 and Halloween Kills, all of which are releasing towards the end of the year. I can take or leave everything before that, and even those four will depend on whether I’ve had both jabs before I risk sitting in a potentially crowded cinema. I reckon a lot of people will be thinking along the same lines. I’m a Marvel fan who is usually pre-booking tickets for the first midnight show, but Black Widow can definitely wait.

  24. One final update before the date itself gets too close: 3.2M doses 33k cases 550 deaths 20k hospitalized the trend here is things getting better each estimate (first two were really best guesses at the time, not highballs — I even wondered if I was being too optimistic). Unless thing turn around fast here we’re heading toward some best-of-pandemic numbers pretty soon. I doubt people have much appetite for continuing restrictions when hosp goes below 10k in April.

  26. So... a group of adults who have had no box office to talk about over the last year start to discuss the possibility that we may have been looking at this wrong ever since T&J's opening is suddenly a case of "not being able to manage our emotions"? Oh the irony, this is straight-up laughable. I'm not saying that Raya's gonna go sub-10M or anything. None of us know what it's going to do! That's the point of discussion! I know you want to be part of some echo chamber, and that for some reason anything that conflicts with your desired narrative bothers you. But you really need to

  27. It's all about marketing challenges. I'm guessing they want more than less than three-four months for promotion (which still hasn't even started, unlike titles such as Fast 9 and Minions 2 which were already being marketed pre-pandemic). They probably moved Peter Rabbit 2 up because it was literally right about to open a year ago and are likely eager to be done with it by now.

  32. Oh yeah, other movies came out this year. Second place on both accounts was the highly-anticipated remake of Disney’s The Lion King. In the African savannah lives Simba, a young lion who is set to follow in his father’s place and become king of the Pridelands. Things start to go awry however when Scar, Simba’s vindictive uncle who was once set to be ruler, kills Simba’s father and forces the young cub to run away forever. But through an emotional, epic journey, Simba discovers what a king truly is and brings peace and balance to the great circle of life. The Lion King is one of tho
