  1. Two years of difference between streaming/on-demand buildup. Much more options for streaming John Wick, and thus less physical sales. But yes, this is dependent on quality. JR 2 did fine for a poorly reviewed movie with limited marketing. This has had strong marketing, but it needs strong reviews, too. With those, it could do 30 mill OW.
  2. Lion really needs to expand next weekend after Oscar nominations. The marketplace will be barren for two weeks and it can gain some traction. But alas, Weinstein wants to promote Gold instead for some inexplicable reason.
  3. Also, disappointing weekend for La La Land. Still on pace for 150 and maybe even 175, but 200 is probably dead now. Amazing for Hidden Figures - probably doing 150+, and could hit 175 if it gets a Best Picture nom, which it should.
  4. I mean, I think his point was that most of those movies are Oscar bait and they didn't turn out well.......
  5. I thought that McAvoy was great. Funnier than I expected, and M. Night does some fun Hitchcock stuff. I guess I was just disappointed that people said this had a HUGE TWIST, and then it turns out it....takes place in the same universe as another movie barely anyone saw from 16 years ago? Who cares? I would have assumed they all took place in the same universe anyway. That was lame as shit.
  6. I was alot more entertained by The Visit than Split, tbh. I also like Signs better than the Sixth Sense, so what do I know? Split is a great performance in an average movie.
  7. Do we assume that Splity and XXX drop on Saturday, because one is a PG-13 horror and the other is a sequel? Or will they have a shot at increasing because today is a Friday in January?
  8. I still think we're getting 8 noms. Debating whether to leave off Fences or Hacksaw or even Hidden Figures or Arrival. I think Manchester, Moonlight, LLL, and Lion are all locks, and Hell or High Water is pretty safe. I'd put Arrival at the next safest, then Hidden Figures, with Fences and Hacksaw battling for the final slot. IDK, outside of the Mel obsessed Globes, Hacksaw hasn't really done amazing or anything.
  9. I think that Peter Berg should cast Antiques Roadshow host Mark Wahlberg in his next true life picture instead. That might shake things up at the box office.
  10. If one dog dying could get Marley and Me to 150 million, imagine how far a dog dying ten times can take this movie? It might beat TFA domestically.
  11. Is that PTA/DDL movie actually coming out this year? That sounds super dope.
  12. The problem with these early predictions every year is that people go for all the biggest movies that seem like possible contenders, when that just never happens. If I'm looking now, Downsizing and the Detroit movie seem very viable, but all the other big ones seem like really going out on a limb at this point. We have gotten at least one from Sundance almost every year this decade, so we're probably gonna find out one within a few weeks here.
  13. You may very well, great! But if that's true, maybe you have compiled over 20,000 posts complaining about how stupid liberal elites only like pretentious shit and "real" people hate stupid SJWS and their non-blockbuster movies, so pardon me for being confused. Also, I like MMA, and am skipping a movie this afternoon to watch the football game. Stop being a victim and generalizing. The whole anti-"snob", anti-intelligence bullcrap has gone too far. It's possible to love sports and also be able to enjoy a movie like Moonlight way more than Fantastic Sky Beam Hunt 3.
  14. I'm surprised Lordmandeep is defending Patriot's Day given the BO performance of it. I thought he hated any movie that grossed under 200 million.
  15. Sad that Fences hasn't held better. I thought it was terrific. Also think that the complaint that it was "too much like a stage play" is maybe the sneaky worst go-to complaint of 2016. It's a Pulitzer Prize winning play that takes place entirely in one backyard. What did people expect, car chases and Denzel shooting people? It adds montages and season changes and a ton of subtle but classical shit that really adds to a work that would still be awesome if I filmed it on a cellphone in my own backyard. Great movie, man.
  16. I hope so! I enjoyed the hell out of it. In my top five of the year, actually, pending Silence/Jackie/OJ/Elle/The Lobster.
  17. What's up with Lion's expansion? I know Weinstein is in trouble, but it's not expanding at all and it has no marketing. Having seen the movie, I think it could absolutely be a big time hit if they do something with it, given the coming nominations as well.
  18. I was being extremely conservative, but excellent. I said for a month in the LLL topic it could even challenged Chicago, and someone people thought I was nuts. But it's on the way.
  19. I think Gosling's character made a very natural progression from a typical obnoxious white boy who goes on about the "magic of jazz" and acts like a pretentious dick, to someone who we learn more about and learn to love as the movie goes on. I think he had actually had a pretty defined arc here. Also, I love this fucking movie to no end.
  20. So, with nominations and wins still pending, where does La La Land end up? That's really all that's interesting to me right now. It looks set for 125+ probably.
  21. Holy fuck. Do we still have a post of the year category at the Boffies? if so, I know what I'm voting for.
  22. If Ryan Reynolds gets nominated or Deadpool I'm boycotting the Boffies forever. My Best Actor right now is Affleck, Washington, Pine, Gosling, and Gyllenhaal but I still need to see quite a few movies, especially the Lobster and Sully. I'd maybe put Patel over Garfield or Jake G if he counts as a lead. Also, Andy Samberg is a legit contender for me. Popstar still holds up better than anything I saw before November tbh, including Hell or High Water. I expected more people to FYC Popstar, but consider that shit for Movie, Comedy, Actor, and Song (x4) for sure.
  23. After seeing Lion, I can see why Oscar voters and guilds are (apparently!) taking to it so well. After the three big locks I honestly think it might be the next safest bet along with Hell or High Water. I think Silence, Fences, and Arrival are all more vulnerable, honestly. I actually think Garth Davis could be the semi-annual out of nowhere Best Director nod.
  24. Really enjoyed it. It meanders in the second half a bit much, but Patel is charismatic enough to carry it, and the payoff is fantastic. The first half is freaking spectacular, honestly, and Davis is certainly a very promising talent to look for- I look forward to his Mary Mags movie very much next year. Gonna end up in my top ten of the year, which is a bit of a shock cuz I really wasn't too excited at all going into it.
