Diversity and Gender Representation in Movies
Cmasterclay replied to PDC1987's topic in The Speakeasy
Really? You think Mike B Jordan didn't get the Human Torch because he's an incredible talent? That's an artistic decision. Elba is one of the best actors working today, that's an artistic decision. Denzel Washington is one of the best actors of all-time- you're telling me it's not a smart artistic decision to cast him as, say, Lex Luthor, or something? -

She existed, but she really served no other purpose to the plot or any of the movie's themes. The point is that she was clearly treated as an object in one very prominent scene- one that was in every commercial- in a way that added nothing to the movie. -

There is a clear difference between sexuality and objectification/exploitation. Plenty of feminists, especially in the third wave, are supporters of sex-positive imagery in media- the ability for women to be sexual, open, and exposed WITHOUT being exploited in doing so. So there's plenty of feminist/progressive support for women showing skin in movies/ads/TV. The difference is that something like Alice Eve is not a sex-positive moment where the woman's sexuality plays an important role to the plot- it's literally just a woman stripping to have a woman strip. Even the women's bodies in Fast are, while objectified, fit to the tone of the movie and portrayed in an energetic, sex-not quite positive but certainly not STID bad. Like Numbers said, the Eve stuff was as cold and calculated as it gets, serving no purpose to either the story or the tone of the movie. It literally treats a woman as if she is an object, considering she does nothing else in the movie. -

He might not be a big "movie star" in terms of draw power, but the guy is a fucking incredible actor, and that's what matters. -

My quest to finally see a movie in a completely empty theater may come true today- based on that Child 44 number, I might be the only person in America to go see it. Gotta support the Hardy, people! -

Any movie that stops the music and takes massive dramatic pauses before Vin Diesel delivers a one-liner multiple times one movie has clearly weaponized stupidity into a self-aware, tongue-in-cheek blast. Transformers is constructed with every ounce of its fiber to be a legitimate movie and not a tongue-in-cheek ride. Fast is the Colbert Report to Transformers O'Reilly Factor.

The more stupid and implausible it got, the more I enjoyed it (minus the beautiful ending). That's what I watch these movies for- the same reasons I watch wrestling. It's all about being insane and cheesy and ridiculous. Vin Diesel got hit in the head with a wrench and got right back up- and I LOVED it. I love that these characters don't bleed, yet somehow there's still emotion and stakes behind them. It's like a snarky self-aware adult is pretending to be a little kid playing with action figures who is pretending to be a snarky self-aware adult! It's genius, man. That's the fun of it. 9/10

It's not really like Damon's storyline in Interstellar at all. Part of the reason it's such a compelling book is that Damon's character is of such good-humor and cheer throughout it- it's a survival story, not an isolation one. I hope Damon brings back some of the everyman charm he's so good at but has lacked recently.
