It's the middle of February and fucking freezing out. It's not a summer or holiday midnight release where people have off and are comfortable to rush out to see it. It's a hard R, non-summer release that skews older and has a legendary Saturday coming up. Stop overreacting. And stop proclaiming victory, Neo and Ando, for goodness sake.

Looks pretty solid. I'm not expecting Snatch or anything, but it should be fun. Also, Matthew Vaughn grew up believing that Robert Vaughn, the original star of the U.N.C.L.E. show, was his father, until a paternity test proved it wrong. It actually sort of went south in a sad way between them. So yea, kinda weird this is attached to Kingsman.

Mid 2000s Will Smith could. Seriously, that shit was freakish. In 2007 you could have told me a 2 hour film of Will Smith taking a dump made 100 million and I would have believed you. But otherwise, I agree with this sentiment. Not to mention, 2013 Will Smith did take a 2 hour dump on screen, and it flopped.

Cooper was spectacular in Pines. I loved him in Silver Linings Playbook, but Pines is the movie that convinced me he wasn't a fluke. I had some problems with the movie, but generally, Cooper crushed it. He also elevates AS, politics aside, from a good war film into a great watch by sheer force of charisma and availability. Dude's the new king of Hollywood. Sorry Tatum- B Coops is the successor to Leo's crown.

The fact that someone can watch a movie like Imitation Game and then watch this and somehow believe that Imitation Game is a higher artistic achievement and more powerful and well-made film literally defies comprehension for me. The Academy got this so wrong. It's unbelievable.

So close to taking down the Matrix Reloaded's R-Rated record. Just a million short. And people thought 50 Shades was the only movie with a chance to do it!

Eddie Redmayne is fucking 33? I thought the dude was straight up like 25. That's insane to me.

I can't even comprehend how a human being can watch both Selma and the Imitation Game and find Tyldum and CUmberbatch more deserving of praise than DuVernay and Oyewolo. Unbelievable. I know taste is subjective and all that shit, but honestly, you must don't have any real understanding of the art of film, directing, or acting to truly believe that those two made better artistic contributions than the Selma two. Unless there's a prejudice about skin color going on, which I don't wanna get into in this topic. But regardless of that, fuck yea, Whiplash!!!

Awful that Tyldum got nominated for his vanilla, white bread direction in TIG and DuVernay, who directed a modern day classic. Such safe, prejudiced bullshit.

Coolio's reviewed summed this up for me. Probably my second favorite movie of the year after Whiplash, though I did find the characterization of LBJ to be highly questionable and historically dubious. Still, everything else hits on a near perfect level. Only the second movie to make me cry.

Awful for Selma, even if it isn't a Friday movie. I expected at least 20 million. Wow. Not particularly great for Taken, either.

Beats me, man. The only action scenes in it are poorly edited and jump around a bunch. There is a few car chases, but I don't see these movies for car chases, I wanted much more hand to hand badassery.

It has a ton of buzz and some really great marketing, so I can certainly see a 40 mill weekend coming, but this is not going to get WOM like the second, much less the first, at all. Taken 2 might have gotten bad reviews, but it had ENERGY, was fun in a ludicrous way, and had cool action scenes. This movie has barely any action and a bland, lifeless storyline. Not gonna be a WOM hit, IMO.

Bad. Very bland, boring, and if it wasn't for the name "Taken," I would honestly think this was a straight-to-DVD movie. I love the first, and the second, while flawed, was absolutely bug fuck insane and I had fun. This though.....sheesh. I went in not caring about the reviews at all, but honestly, whether it got an 11 percent or a 91 percent on RT, this movie sucks.

So is this still a thing?

I thought it was quite good but at the same time it would have been impossible for it to be bad, if that makes any sense. It's generally a, er, markable telling of an absolutely remarkable story. With such a moving true story, and a crew consisting of Deakins, Desplat, and the Coens, it would have been tough for it to get messed up, so Jolie and the cast certainly did a fine job. At the same time, I felt it was good to the near minimum of what it could be, given the story and all it had going for it. That said, it's a solid watch. The cast is excellent- O'Donnell absolutely kills it, and Miyavi is an exceedingly watchable psychopath- great job by him. Even Jai Courtney does nice work. Jolie has a steady hand in directing, and unlike others in this thread, I don't really have beef with WHAT story she was trying to tell- the story of a brave man surviving one incredibly harrowing experience, not necessarily a broader story about his life and transformations. I thought she did a great job establishing tone and making the audience feel something. That said, and this is maybe more of a writing critique, it really could have used more conversation and character development in the camps. We learn nothing new about Louis once he reaches the second camp except that he's brave and a survivor. Beyond that, we get no real conversations or character moments for him conveyed through dialogue. What really would have improved this film is cutting about twenty minutes of torture and raft-action scenes and replacing it with more flashbacks, dialogue with other prisoners, and even visions. It would have made the feel less repetative and more memorable and engaging all the way through. That all said, glad I saw it, for sure.

Fingers crossed for Whiplash and Nightcrawler in baumer's top five. Also, Top Five.
