  1. In Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks pretty much tells the world "Hey, remember me assholes? From 1992 to 2002, I had the best stretch of any actor since film was invented, both in terms of box office and in terms of incredible performances. Stop saying I'm washed up and not a draw anymore, mmkay?" And I'm happy for it- Tom Hanks is a fucking legend.
  2. I get what baumer's saying, and I think he has a great point, plus CP will provide hefty competition. But shit, at the same time, sometimes films defy logic, and I think Gravity has the potential to be one of those films- a very mini Avatar, if you will.
  3. Weren't you calling the dailies unremarkable for three straight days? Also, please do 30+, Captain Phillips!
  4. I think Captain Phillips is far, far closer to a safe bet than August: Osage County is. My predictions: Gravity (Winner) 12 Years a Slave Captain Phillips Out of the Furnace Wolf of Wall Street (Hell yea it's coming out) American Hustle Philomena Inside Llewyn Davis And one of either Mr. Banks, Her, or August: Osage County

  6. The cum scene is the funniest scene I've seen it like four or five years maybe and anyone who finds it stupid must be crazed
  7. Flip a coin between Gravity and 12 Years a Slave, IMO. I don't know if anything else has a shot
  8. This was fucking brilliant. Favorite movie of the year so far. Somehow it lived up to the reviews.....but to me, it was for reasons different than the reviews really focused on (though those aspects were obviously good too).
  9. What a fucking number for Gravity. This thing can challenge 200, we think? Incredible. LOL@ people who claimed Melissa McCarthy was the only reason the Heat was such a hit, BTW. Haven't seen Gravity, but in the words of sports philosopher Bart Scott, CAN'T WAIT!!
  10. Holy shit the reviews for this are absolutely insane. I don't remember the last time seeing this many 5/5s or 4/4s

  13. Pretty good movie! JGL proves to be a pretty damn good director, and his acting is great as well. Scarlett is incredible and almost Oscar worthy. Pretty funny at times. Plot and character development in general felt underwritten. I say it's a solid B
  14. Wall Street might be back in 2013. Make up your minds!
  15. Wow, I don't think my opinion of a movie has changed that much upon a later second viewing in ages. When I first saw this, I thought it was mediocre and overrated- a technical movie that didn't really exceed my expectations in any one area. But I watched this again yesterday for a research class, and holy shit. This movie was pretty fucking fantastic. I finally GOT it. I actually almost got a bit emotional when the daughter's song kicked in at the end while he was driving around- brilliantly directed scene. And the editing is fantastic throughout. I don't think Pitt and Hill deserved to win the Oscars like some lobbied, but I'll be damned if they weren't real and geniune as could be. Great film. Bumped from a 6/10 to a 9/10 for me.
  16. For a movie as dark and long as Prisoners is, great it may be, that's a pretty damn great number.
  17. I don't get why people are saying this is a boring September- sure, it's boring compared to summer months, but it's pretty great compared to most Septembers. If Riddick had done a couple more million, every weekend would have had a 20+ opener. Assuming Cloudy 2 does as excellent as most expected, we're getting two 40+ million weekends in September, plus two in the 20 million range, plus three potential slow burning breakouts in Rush, INI, and Don Jon. Yay, September.
  18. This, despite not being a horror movie, was maybe the scariest movie I've seen in years. Uncompromisingly intense and haunting, as well as creepy as shit at times and brutal very often. It also gets so thrilling at times that I almost jumped out of my seat. Needless to say, I thought it was brilliant. For three particular reasons. One is the directing and the cinematography- this is one of the best shot movies I've seen in years (bravo Deakins.) Two is the acting, which is just a masterclass. Jackman is better than ever. Howard and Davis are way, way underpraised in reviews. But Jake G runs away with it. And I say that as someone who hasn't been too fond of his acting in the past in most movies. He was fucking brilliant. But what really set it apart was how REAL it felt- Keller's beat up pick up truck didn't feel like a prop, it felt lived in. The way the two families open the door and greet each other and hang out on Thanksgiving felt REAL, it didn't seem like famous actors playing a part. Gyllenhal's tattoos and twitches didn't feel like things just tacked on- they felt like they were really apart of him. That stuff is hard to achieve. And this movie does it in droves. This movie does have some flaws, but this post is long enough as is. Top three movie of the year so far. A
  19. Good number for Prisoners- my theater was quite packed. Brilliant movie, though also incredibly tough to watch in parts.
  20. Insidious is obviously spectacular (yay, largest live action September opening), but that number for the Family blows me away. No marketing and not even a lick of buzz. None. And it did a solid number.
