Weekdays Thread | #THU - Wonka $4.21M &Heron $896K
LonePirate replied to Issac Newton's topic in Numbers and Data
Caught a preview of Anyone But You tonight. Maybe 20 people in the theater which is not bad as I don't think this was advertised much at all. I literally gasped about 15 minutes into the movie when Brenda Chenoweth (Rachel Griffiths) appeared on screen. I had no idea she was in this and I have not seen her since the halcyon days of yore known as Six Feet Under. She looked great, even if it was a bit jarring to see her in a different generational role. As for the movie itself, it was a perfectly fine rom com with some genuinely sweet and funny moments. The movie tried some new things for the genre which is always nice given how formulaic the genre can be. There was an attempted plot contrivance which went nowhere fast which makes me think the film underwent a considerable hatchet job following some test screenings. As it is, a part of the film felt unnecessary. However, I wouldn't call the film bloated as it moves along at a nice clip. I am kind of surprised the film wasn't held for Valentine's Day; but it is entertaining enough that hopefully moviegoers will find it over the holidays and turn it into a minor hit. Sweeney is credited as an executive producer on the film so I hope it doesn't flop. Granted, it's not a classic. It is a more than suitable cinematic diversion, though. I give it a solid B as it is almost within grasp of a B+. -
Caught a matinee showing of Saltburn. There were 7 people total in attendance. I didn’t have any expectations going in but I was aware that the film was somewhat dark and divisive. I ended up enjoying the flick, mostly due to the ridiculous and irredeemable characters not to mention there were at least three different scenes featuring moments that I can honestly say I have never seen in a movie. Elordi and to a lesser extent Pike may be receiving attention for their performances; but this is Keoghan’s vehicle from start to finish. The writing served him well and he played it to the hilt and then some. The film is not for everyone. However, if you like something off the beaten path, this is worth watching. Also, it made me a fan of Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Watched May December tonight. I’d give it a A-/B+. It has some solid performances with an expected plot twist you see coming. It doesn’t quick stick the landing but the final scene between Moore and Portman is great as it makes you rethink some earlier scenes. Much like with The Killer from a few weeks ago, Netflix should have kept this in theaters and promoted it widely as the film would have drawn plenty of adult moviegoers.

The weekend started off with the family forcing me to watch Genie - a direct to Peacock movie starring Melissa McCartney as a genie in the modern day. I don’t know if I have seen a worse movie in years. There are no scarier words in the movie business than direct to streaming starring Melissa McCartney. Fortunately the weekend ended tonight with a rewatch of Gone Girl. I don’t know if it is better than Se7en or Zodiac but it is right up there with them as my favorite Fincher film. It is so unsavory but so damn fun. A truly enjoyable flick I can watch time and time again. Everything about it is damn near perfect.

The Garfield Movie | Sony | May 24, 2024
LonePirate replied to AMCTheater2000's topic in Box Office Discussion
Does Hollywood know there are other actors even professional voice actors who could do a better job than Pratt? How much longer will it be before Disney signs him up for the next Pixar film? -
Why do these movies need to go anywhere? This sounds like a fan expectation or desire to recreate the magic in a bottle of the MCU between 2008-2019. Perhaps these movies should be allowed to exist on their own without any connection to anything. The MCU doesn’t need some overarching purpose. They are not the cinematic equivalent of a philosophical sojourn.

That $2800+ PTA for The Holdovers may be solid for this wretched weekend; but it’s not exactly a vote of confidence for the film to maintain a lengthy stay in theaters over the holidays.

Oppenheimer is enjoying a decent return to IMAX screens this weekend, even if it is only playing once or twice a day with KOTFM taking the other showtimes. This is the 6.30pm Saturday showing at Lincoln Square in NYC. The film should easily clear $200K if not more this weekend domestically.

Weekend Thread | TAYLOR SWIFT $31M Estimate, KOTFM $23M

I love I, Tonya as much as anyone. That scene with the fur coat is one of the funniest in cinematic history. Sill, I wouldn't consider its $30M domestic gross indicative of Robbie's power to draw an audience. She certainly did not help Babylon play to packed houses. However she does seem to have a talent for finding roles that boost her profile significantly and/or earn her a nice paycheck. Nothing wrong at all with that sort of acting career. -

Granted, it has a better release date for an adult drama, but I am not convinced Napoleon is headed for domestic gross over KOTFM. For one, Most (not all, just most) Americans know or care very little about world history so he's not exactly someone a lot of people are clamoring to know more about, especially given the weak trailer. If you're someone watching the trailer in a theater without the film's name being displayed on the video link, it's going to take a bit to realize the film is about Napoleon; and for some it won't be realized until his name appears on screen. I think people need to keep their expectations in check especially since DiCaprio is a far bigger draw than Phoenix. -

Caught an afternoon showing of KOTFM. Somebody brought their 3 or 4 year old toddler to showing. He was a little talkative for the first hour before apparently falling asleep for the rest of it. Why in the hell would anyone bring a young kid to see this movie? Did the babysitter cancel? Makes no sense at all. -

That's an interesting way to describe your reaction to a movie about greed, prejudice and murder. Seems like a reaction more fitting to Oppenheimer. J/K. -

I'm guessing the movie's length knocked it down from an A to an A-. -

Cinema's most notorious troll critic has struck again with his "review" of KOTFM in which he seemingly thinks the film doesn't treat Native Americans harshly enough. -

I’m really curious how KOTFM will perform overseas. Obviously Leo is huge everywhere but I don’t think Scorsese has a deep international admiration society. The story is exceptionally American unlike Oppenheimer whose story had and has enormous global resonance. -
The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread
LonePirate replied to Shawn Robbins's topic in Box Office Discussion
In what may be an indication of both the age skew and resistance to the movie’s length, the Regal IMAX near me has sold 33 seats for a 2:30pm Thursday showing of KOTFM while the 7:00pm Thursday showing has sold only 23 seats. The Friday times are different as there are three showings at roughly 12:00pm, 4:30pm and 9:00pm. The theater is massive as it seats over 550 people and there is zero chance it will come close to selling out like Oppenheimer did. Sticking with two shows a day around the 2pm and 7pm hours seems best to me. -

These Friday the 13th rankings are far more interesting than the millionth iteration of Star Wars or MCU rankings. -

The Regal IMAX near me has a 7:30 showing tonight which has been on sale for weeks and is north of 95% full. They added a 3:15pm IMAX showing back on Wednesday and it has sold a whopping 6 tickets so far.
