  1. pretty much this. not quite so much this.
  2. third man is worse. /controversialopinion
  3. ivan's childhood is tarkovsky's second best film.
  4. for a film that quoted shakespeare verbatim, it's about as good as it could be. because i really hate shakespeare. baz luhrmann's gleefully anachronistic adaption of romeo & juliet doesn't take its source material at all seriously - a gracious decision, given that shakespeare is an alarmingly overrated hack. unfortunately, his unrelentingly obnoxious dialogue was carried over, which was certainly *not* gracious. besides that, this director's unique stylistic visions are always fun (though this is nothing on moulin rouge), and i'm sure those who actually like shakespeare (and luhrmann) will like it even more. 6.3/10
  5. stereotypical noir. okay, it's fine and entertaining, but these noirs continue to baffle me in their reputation. 6/10
  6. ozu's best, and utterly shattering. "isn't life disappointing?" one of the most heartbreaking films ever is a complex and subtle drama that details the familial generation gap that inevitably grows wider due to simple personality differences, and the often unbearable emptiness and loneliness of old age. if only one thing could be improved, it would be the performances that at times seem a little staged, due to the actors and cameras 'taking turns' so to speak. ultimately deserving of its reputation. 9/10
  7. one of the best short films ever made. an utterly fascinating work of science fiction, about memory and its various levels of concretisation. the seminal moment of the film, a brief few seconds of movement, appears to me to be the the highest level, where reality and memory have all but merged. extremely self-contained and not really a flaw to be found, though i do wonder how high a rating this could be given considering it is only what it is, or something. but it's totally mesmerising. 8.3/10
  8. definitely overrated, as a lot of early experimental shorts are. i was rather amused by this, with its dream antics and ridiculous use of music. i also had no idea what was going on or what it meant, and it seemed put together rather amateurishly. but it was kinda fun, at least. 4.5/10
  9. bergman's weakest post-1950 IMO. normal bergman stuff mixed with an animal cruelty subplot, dream sequences, narration and fourth wall interviews. it doesn't really fit together that well from my point of view. it doesn't feel natural and it's too much. would say so far that this is my least favourite post-1950 bergman, though being in my tier 6 that still means it's better than the majority of movies i've seen. 6/10
  10. very good, but one of my least favourite bergmans. if this is one of bergman's slighter well-known works, that only speaks to how great he is. by far the lightest film i've seen from him to date, it still manages to attack questions regarding relationships, even if it didn't seem quite as assured as his later efforts. but yeah, still pretty damn good. my tenth bergman too. 7.3/10
  11. a great film, and bergman's 12th best. yep. yeah, definitely seems to be about an artist in psychological crisis. a lot of effective scenes, though it's not entirely cohesive, a bit messy plot-wise. though you could say that that is analogous to the artist's shattered psyche. lol. anyway, bergman's foray into proper horror (though it's still reasonably divergent from genre clichés) is mostly excellent. 8/10
  12. a bergman masterpiece. though for bergman, masterpiece is a pretty unremarkable word. war is one of the most illuminating film subjects, but only when great directors mix it with their own concerns, rather than letting veterans of the genre make stupid, jingoistic shit. in this case, the contrast between probing psychology and harsh survivalism is deeply disconcerting, and very powerful. the boat scene is one of the bleakest things ever put to screen. 9.1/10
  13. pretty good with some fantastic cinematography but still a slightly overrated classic. TBH king vidor is wildly overrated (duel in the sun *gag*). quite melodramatic with a seriously over-the-top soundtrack, but it's a very nice film about unrealised dreams, ending up an indistinguishable spot amongst the mass of mediocrity that is humanity. the film never stops reminding you of this, with the final scene zooming out from the protagonists' sort-of happy ending to a large audience, most of which probably have experienced the same ordinary life as them. not the most wildly unique direction ever but still a very good film. 7/10
  14. one of the most fundamentally bizarre movies ever made, in the sense that it exists in another reality.
  15. i enjoyed it, it's not as great as the critics say et cetera et cetera...but holy jesus you need to fix the title.
  16. i'm pretty sure i've won every thread i've posted in.

  19. mccabe and mrs miller is great, but that's because it isn't like most westerns at all.
  20. lol, i just don't like classic westerns very much. didn't think much of peckinpah's one either.
