  1. good and entertaining, but i think i prefer scorsese's less glamorous early works. 68
  2. nice and sympathetic, but i found it a wee bit overrated. 7/10
  3. whatever. there's nothing really wrong with it, just paint by numbers. at least they focused on the slaves, rather than feeling the need to have endless candlelit bedroom scenes of white couples having Serious Discussions about the ethics of slavery. though they did have a white saviour in the end. yes, true to story, but it's tedious and timid. 5/10
  4. melancholy with a capital Q. rather likable due to excellent performances by mr puddlebottom and miss sunggleborf. on the other hand, it just feels...insubstantial. i suppose that could be rather the point, but it's pretty much just a quietly depressing but relatively insignificant reflection on autostasis. ok that's a terrible made up word. anyway the best word i can think to sum this film up is 'nice'. 6.0
  5. 'nymphomaniac part 1' isn't a movie.
  6. good lord this is fucking annoying.
  7. i can't express how disappointed i am with this, and is by far my least favourite jonze film. easily the most interesting aspect of the film, though i don't think it was necessarily indicting it.
  8. bump can this maybe be a sticky somewhere for a while?
  9. this immensely spiritual reflection on family, mortality and love is nothing if not a mysterious enigma, and has a dash of political allegory too. 7.3

  11. 11 (9.4 actually) lists, 890 votes, 617 unique films, 5 points required to break the top 100.
  12. the act of killing, only god forgives, blue is the warmest color, gravity, spring breakers, upstream color, wolf of wall street, great gatsby, now you see me, catching fire, philomena, desolation of smaug once.
  13. my more detailed review: we begin with a tour of fly fishing, and fist fucking. actually, there's no fist fucking here, a lamentable exclusion. but we're thrown into an artistic whimsy that recalls von trier's most playful moments, perhaps most resembling the five obstructions, oddly. fibonacci, edgar allan poe, and a gorge of orgies to make you question the meaning of the phrase 'censored edition' add up to, well, something that underwhelmed me, to be honest. but that wasn't a movie - merely half a one. so i popped in the second, the darker part apparently, and it was: but it wasn't; it was, in fact, a redefinition of the first, placing joe's story in perspective with a series of speeches that served to clarify von trier's polemic objective. the ending, bait, hook and all, concluded what i see as a coherent statement regarding gender, sexuality and violence, something one mightn't expect given that this film is von trier playing a trick. apparently. well, it is. and it's philosophy. it's both. it's beautiful.
  14. i could have agreed that there was more trickery over meaning after seeing only the first part, but the second part so unmistakably clarifies its polemic objectives that i find it hard to believe one couldn't see its themes. in fact, aside from his didactic masterpiece dogville, i'd say this is his most obvious work of political philosophy. i was feeling rather underwhelmed at the halfway mark, but the second half is fucking beautiful, and subsequently lifts the first half as well. 9.0
  15. well i've compiled the first six lists. would make an interesting list at this stage. 551 individual votes, 446 unique movies. 3 points required to make top 100 at the moment.
  16. i'll make it easier for you and just take the first hundred. also, you don't have to rank completely, just within the scoring groups is good enough. it's a possibility.
  17. gravity is a purely visual experience indeed. the matrix is very enjoyable, i'll give it that, but any time any of the characters opened their mouth to spout their pop philosophy, it was quite unbearable. fate, destiny, love saving the day, finding your inner self, blah blah blah.
  18. we're past the start date last time, and sims still hasn't been here since march. so i'll take over this time, for the 3rd annual BOF top 100! if he comes, i'll be happy to hand it over. RULES - You are to submit a list that will go toward determining the forums' all time 100 favorite films. (I should specify that as you are compiling your list, you can define "favorite" however you wish to. For some posters, "favorite" films may be the same as what they deem to be the "best" films. For others, "favorite" films are simply those that provide the most entertainment value.) - There is no minimum number of films you need to list; nonetheless, the scoring system rewards those who publish a full list up to 100 films. - Miniseries and TV films are not allowed. Films that have not yet been released are obviously not allowed (believe it or not, this came up a couple times last year). The film does not need to have had a US theatrical release to be eligible. - Lists can be posted in the thread or by PM, i don't care. but it'd be nice if some were by PM so we'd get more a surprise. - Films in a series must be listed separately. No votes for just the "Lord of the Rings trilogy" or "Kill Bill," etc. If you can't come up with separate rankings, choose just one film to represent the series (e.g. Fellowship for LOTR). If you disregard this, I will allocate the points equally across the films. - The best way to list is - film (year) - because a lot of films have duplicate titles. SCORING I will use the system as in the top 100 directors for this. Deadline of 11:59pm 31 August. Lists received from (28):
  19. third act was much better than the rest that came before it, which was about as generic as that which it was trying to criticise.
