  1. Holy fucking Christ... I mean do we really need 4 Avatar movies? Though I don't think it deserves the golden standard it's often held up to, I did enjoy the first movie for the visually epic fun ride it was and do think they could expand upon it with a sequel... but talking about four movies just makes me think "obvious cash grab" and I really don't want the 3D fad to be revived now that it finally seems to be dying.
  2. Just got back from a sold out 6:30pm IMAX TDKR show. It was digital IMAX, but it still looked great and sounded AMAZING. My friends and I all loved it as we did at the midnight show, and the audience did too. There was a small applause during a scene in the beginning and a HUGE one after the last shot of the movie into the end credits. In terms of sales for Rises: The 10:30pm IMAX show was sold out I saw when we walked by as we were leaving, and so were half the remaining regular shows.
  3. Me and a group of friends (most of whom were with me Thursday night) are going to see The Dark Knight Rises at a 6:30pm IMAX show a couple hours away. I've never been to an IMAX movie before, so hopefully this will be well worth it.Also, this theater sold out every show yesterday, so I'm going to assume it will be packed today as well.
  4. On a completely unrelated note for Jul 21, 2012 08:14 AM PST # Comments The Dark Knight Rises 57,266 Toy Story 3 3,581 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 3,091 Can anyone at all tell me why Toy Story 3 is randomly up there?
  5. Considering how earlier this week all signs were pointing towards a huge OD that was expected to land around DH2's OD number, and how high interest was as well as presales, there is no way this movie shouldn't have done $80m+ yesterday, especially coming off of $30m from midnight showings. The shooting definitely had a bit of an effect, and while there are multiple potential reasons for it having that effect, the real point is it definitely did. Though doing $77m in the wake of this isn't bad, and hopefully this will lead to better legs than expected.Though if the movie ends up opening with barely $160m I can't help but wonder if $400m will still be locked...
  6. I don't think that the shooting is in anyway hindering the movie's WOM. I've seen nothing but incredibly positive responses to the movie on the internet (mainly Facebook) today... many even claiming it to be better than TDK.I agree with WB not doing any reporting it's mostly a guessing game until Monday, so anything should really be taken with a grain of salt. If the numbers do end up being $75m or lower I will probably have to agree that the shootings did have a small effect on the walkups for today. (though I think it will just rebound in the long run with slightly better legs)
  7. I think actuals will be closer to $85m than $80m. I also think, as with TDK, Saturday business will be relatively flat and the Sunday hold will be excellent. I think a $180-184m opening weekend is easily in line.
  8. That is quite nice. It's always good to hear about stuff like this.
  9. The Dark Knight Rises "only" doing $80 million is a bit unexpected coming off of $30m midnights. I do have to wonder if the shooting really did have some negative effect. Not on the movie's actual reception and word of mouth, but just if it hampered with people deciding to go in any small way. (I don't think it did but just a thought to ponder on)Still it's gonna be hard for this to miss $175m opening weekend which almost still guarantees $400m.
  10. Wow that that shooting is something completely unexpected. It makes me feel so sad, the excitement of the people who were just hoping to watch a movie they had likely anticipating for a long time, and likely how happy they were before this sadistic asshole decided to do this. My deepest condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and the theater employees. And that girl that Baumer talked about that was just involved in another shooting, was she ever actually confirmed dead? I hope not
  11. Well after anticipating this movie for 4 years (and REALLY anticipating it for around 2 when it was officially announced) and anticipating it on probably unhealthy levels (I kid) for around 1 year. I can safely say that for me, The Dark Knight Rises did indeed live up to the expectations. Seeing it surprisingly 2.5 hours ealier that we were supposed to, (which was a ginourmous surprise but welcomed) really made us all realize, "Wow, probably the most anticipated, culturally significant movie since The Phantom Menace in 1999 is finally here. And we're watching it." Being a young adult, these past few years really haven't given you a lot to look forward to in this sense. Yeah, TDK, Avengers, and Avatar were all huge. But to be fair the massive success of those was almost a surprise. No one expected them to do what they did. Yet here we are with The Dark Knight Rises, a movie with all that expectation... and one that could truly live up to it. It's just, being a part of something like that feels so fun. Anyway, for the actual movie. Just... wow. Now don't get me wrong, the movie was not perfect. I can see why it isn't getting as many raves as it's immediate predecessor. The first third of the movie feels, well, a little rushed. We're introduced to an anti-social hermit that Bruce Wayne has evolved into. One that isn't in good condition, and Gordon, who lives with the guilt of a lie which practically formed the city of Gotham as it was presented here. John Blake, a more idealist cop that almost seems like a younger Gordon, realizes the seemingly fragile state of the city, somehow realizing that there is indeed a lie sheltering the community, and strives to somehow arrive at a more truthful reality. And boy, do they find out the truth... While the first act of the movie did feel a bit rushed and hard to grip. They were just introducing all of the plot points and characters incredibly fast, it was a bit hard to follow. That said, about the time Batman and Bane had their first big showdown was when things really picked up. Absolutely epic battle scene. Starting in complete silence, with Catwoman and Bane's henchmen just watching in awe and maybe fear. And HOLY SHIT BANE DOES BREAK BATMAN'S BACK. That recieved a gigantic "gasp" from the audience. I think partially because most of them already knew that it happened in the comics and might would in the movie, but just not at that point. Well played Nolan, well played. As Bruce was rising from the darkness, the decay of Gotham really helped with that melancholy feel. And just made you root for him so much more. And I really, really liked Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. I thought she did a fantastic job with the character, and really brought us a more down to earth representation of the character. Bane was done well also. They really did a good job with making him seem as brutal and unforgiving as they come. You really felt that there was a threat with him, and the feeling of uncertainty always helps make things more suspensful. John Blake was very likable, and JGL did a great job as usual. The climactic battle was just... epic. Really, the entire war section of the movie was pure brilliance. Especially the big twist with HOLY SHIT IT WAS REALLY TALIA though I already had a hunch about that but since I actually stayed very clear of spoilers I still wasn't completely sure. I loved Batman's response to Gordon asking him if people would want to know who died saving their lives. Anyone can become a hero, and that Batman stood for something that anyone can stand for. Then he went off, and as everyone in the theater thought their hero had truly made that heroic sacrifice... He lives! And has finally moved on with his life. I absolutely loved the ending with Bruce and Alfred nodding in mutual understanding at the cafe. Really, that was a heartwarming ending, and I was just glad to know that the two of them could live out the rest of their lives happy, and in peace. And the big reveal of John Blake's true name. VERY nice. Overall, in my jumlbed up "review" so to speak of this, I'd have say I absolutely loved it. It had flaws, but I don't think we could have gotten a better ending to this, and it was an emotional thrillride all the way through. I don't really know where to put it with the other two films, honestly I think just because of how well it wraps everything up it might be my favorite of the trilogy now, but I'll just say I give it an A. Maybe an A+, I dunno... I can decide that the other 3 times I see it.
  12. The Dark Knight Marathon (Batman Begins: 7pm/ TDK: technical difficulties, no start/TDKR: 9:40ish)Sold out. Though relatively smaller theater, around 270 seats (it's a rurual area, population less than 20K and the theater is only 5 screens). The bigger ones were being used for the other midnight shows though. No trailers or anything. Audience loved it. Lots of clapping at the end.
  13. Spider-Man's drop is less than stellar but far from a nail in the coffin. The film is on track for a $220m+ gross and a hell of a lot more overseas.

  15. I saw the movie with friends last night, and ended up seeing it again this afternoon with my dad so I've had time to think about it...I really enjoyed this movie. Did I enjoy it more than the Raimi films? Certainly more than 3 (and I was of the few who very moderately enjoyed that one) but probably not as much as 2. I still can't grasp whether I like it more than 1 or not. Granted, being that they are two very different takes on a character I feel a little reluctant to compare them.I loved Andrew Garfield's Spidey. He nailed everything from the nervousness and shyness of Peter Parker to the smartass antics of Spider-Man, though I do think the "coping with loss" Spidey might need some work as Uncle Ben's death didn't seem as moving or sad as it should have been, though out of benefit of the doubt for Garfield I'll blame that on it being a little rushed. I will say the movie did suffer from some serious pacing issues at times. As I mentioned Uncle Ben's death was glossed over and overall the whole "becoming Spider-Man" part of the plot was a little "meh". Though things really got rolling around the scene where Spider-Man catches the car thief. After that it kept going and was an absolutely enjoyable thrillride. The Lizard's motives were shady but it kept the plot on course so I forgive that. The romance was also played genuinely well by Garfield and Stone (and kudos to them and Webb for not making it too gushy like the original trilogy was at times but keeping romance prominent.)Basically, it isn't a perfect movie. Far from it, and while it isn't the ultimate popcorn action movie like Avengers or a character driven crime drama like TDK, I thoroughly enjoyed it for a unique take on a great hero. I'm really looking forward to the sequel and hope they really escalate it to something big. Though I do agree no "with great power comes great responsibility" was BULLSHIT.3.5/5
  16. Great start for Spidey. $7.5 million on Independence Day Tuesday is pretty solid. I'm thinking $33-35 million OD and with solid to good word of mouth this should do $150+ million over the week.Me and a group of friends were planning to see it last night at the midnight show but being the busy 4th of July week everyone (including myself) seems to have family stuff to do at some point so it looks like we'll be waiting for the weekend before seeing it.
  17. But in all seriousness I saw this last Saturday night with some friends and I'd have to say all of us (as well as the audience, if the laughing and cheering indicated anything) really enjoyed it. The plot was a bit more simple than expected from Pixar I agree and it seems like the climax was a bit rushed, but it was nontheless a very good movie. The story was well told, the characters were very likeable (especially Merida and her brothers), and the mother/daughter relationship plot was hit perfectly IMO. 3.5/5 for me.
  18. If this movie does end up to be widely disliked, I can't help but think back 2 years ago when I remember seeing a few people elsewhere on the internet debating about how Toy Story 3 was symbolic in the "ending to what we know as Pixar" just as the movie represented the ending of the toys way of life. I wonder... But anyway, I'm really, really, really shocked by this. I didn't expect this movie to get anywhere close to 64% on RT, let alone with a decent chance of getting lower. It sounds a lot more like mixed opinions than just flat out negative ones though, and also a lot of the "bad for Pixar" talk most reviews mention do really unfairly put the movie down, especially since it is completely newblood doing it. I am getting a bit worried though, and I really hope we aren't about to enter a Dark Ages for Pixar... Please save us, Pete Doctor and Bob Peterson!
  19. I'd like to say it was more around 140-150 reviews. All I remember is when I left to see it, it was still at 100% and when I came back it was 99%.
  20. Join the club, haha. Cars 2 wasn't as terrible as the RT score would make it out to be, IMO. That said it wasn't that great either. It was just a movie I didn't know whether to like or dislike, so it left me with a mixed opinion on it. I could see Monsters University also getting a lower 80% score rather than a 90+ percentile but we'll see. I'm more positive about The Good Dinosaur and Pete Doctor's new film... and by that I mean I'm almost positive those will be our new "masterpieces." Which, if it does turn out that Brave and MU are more "just okay" than "very good" or more than I'm perfectly fine with that. After that streak with Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3 all back to back I think they've deserved to let their magic creativeness orb restabalize and gain energy. At least Brave and probably Monsters will end up enjoyable rather than another Cars 2.
  21. At this rate I'm seeing an 82-87% RT score for this. Maybe among top critics it can break 90% but at this point it's looking like Brave will be Pixar's first 80-90% movie (not counting the lower rated Cars movies). That isn't bad at all. That's STILL better than most non-Pixar animated movies and classic Disney pics. Though I'm starting to question whether or not this can do subsantially more than $200 million. If word of mouth is more "solid" or "pretty good" than "great" or "fantastic" then it might not spark enough male interest to get past its so-called "female only" wall. Changing my predictions to $58-62m/$210-225m with a 39-45% 3D share opening weekend.
  22. Unless this movie ends up to just absolutely blow even more than Cars 2 did I'm 99% positive it's doing at least $200 million. As for how much higher it could go mainly would depend on WOM. Before Cars 2, no Pixar movie had sold below 30 million tickets in their respective runs. 30 million tickets in today's average pricing and the added 3D (guessing a share around 45-55%) would put it at a potential $265-275 million. That seems quite possible, assuming word of mouth continues to be very good and it opens at around $60 million. Although, I dunno if Cars 2 has in any way "tainted" the Pixar brand. I guess we'll know the answer in a couple of weeks.
  23. Well unfortunately MIB 3 is officially not doing $200m domestic now (whatever chance it may have had before seems gone now) though overseas is more than compensating. But Avengers is closing in on $600 million! Can't wait to see it shatter that milestone, and for someone to finally top James Cameron in that league. Well, Titanic anyway.Prometheus is doing similarly to how I expected, and Madagascar 3 is doing a decent bit better. Overall it should be a decent weekend.
  24. Apparently it was Ace Ventura: Pet Detective : /
  25. Yeah, and I would love to see Star Wars' official daily breakdown from the original 1977 release.
