  1. As well-known as JNH is among film aficionados, he's still underrated.
  2. Sorry to hear about that. He's one of the most well-known and probably respected critics in the nation. I hope he'll find someplace else to land soon.
  3. RIP Condolences and prayers to family & friends...
  4. This was a great series. I hadn't watched any seasons past Two but I was able to jump into the story easily. This makes me want to see any follow on "sequel" seasons.
  5. I'll watch it through the first season but beyond that.....meh. Unless HBO knocks it out of the park in the remaining episodes I'll pass. For anyone who has read the book, is it worth keeping up with? (please no spoilers)
  6. 8-10 weeks is on the short end of a production schedule. They often run 90-120 days (12-16 weeks).
  7. Friday estimates already?? I should have stuck with my original $29m Purge 2 prediction although Friday will be frontloaded so I might still be on the money (low to mid 20s).
  8. Indeed. He's a living legend. I"m lowballing so as to not be disappointed.
  9. Unique Visual spectacle : 40% - The unique visual spectacle will be diminished for the aforementioned reasons although I'm sure there will be new environments...subtract 10%. Story, characters, plot : 40% - Subtract 5% from Story, Characters, plot because the world and characters are now familiar to us. Novelty of 3D : 20% - Take out the last 20%.
  10. I'm assuming that means it's a low estimate. I think Avatar's success was mostly due to the film being something visually new as well as its expert use of 3D. It was an experience. The sequels have neither of those advantages.
  11. Domestic predictions (based on anecdotal WOM): Avatar 2 - $475m Avatar 3 - $445m Avatar 4 - $415m Agree with Hatebox, I'd love to see what this underwater environment is like.
  12. I tend to agree. Avatar was the first film to truly get 3D 'right'. Alot of the appeal (and the dollars) came from 3D screenings. 5 years later and with 3D saturating the market, it won't have that going for it. Unless Cameron knocks it out of the park again and gives us something new, I don't see the sequels getting above $500m. The aftertaste for Avatar is more sour than after Titanic. People will still flock and if the $1 billion combined budget rumors are true, it will still make a profit, but I don't see Cameron getting the #3,#4, and #5 spots on the all time list with these films.
  13. Already here though not that much of an increase. I believe at one of my local theaters, the big films that just came out costs slightly more.
  14. I'm with you on Under the Skin and Snowpiercer. Especially Under the Skin.
  15. Girls and young women were behind Titanic, Frozen, Maleficent's success, to name a very few (I think Alice in Wonderland was more universal). Powerful demographic.
  16. Where did all those profits go? Is Warner Brothers flush with cash for years to come or has the franchise's success already been forgotten within the studio boardrooms (on to the next hit)?
  17. I think I agree with you Baumer. Eight films ALL grossing as much as they did. I think what sets this franchise apart is the large number of sequels. We will continue to see smaller runs like Hunger Games (4 movies) which will pull in big numbers but 7-10? We may not see that again over the next 40 years.
