Yes, but these are the kinds of people that tried to tell the world Titanic was doomed back in early 97. Execs in the movie industry don't seem to actually know how to gauge the quality of their own product.

The negative stuff on Titanic was before the movie was shown to anyone. That's not the case with Coppola's movie. The biggest studios in the western world saw the movie on a giant IMAX screen and they don't think the movie is good enough to invest their money into a market & distribution budget.

KFP4's Thursday weekly drop was ~61%, Dune 2's Thursday weekly drop was ~51%. But I'm seeing most predictions expect substantially lower drops for both over the weekend, maybe 40-42% drops compared to last weekend. Is that normal? I.e. on a Thursday you see a much bigger drop from last week than you do on a weekend? (I guess I assumed last Thursday's gross already took that into account).

(I guess for KFP4, the idea is last Thursday was spring break, yesterday isn't, so you see a super steep drop, but on weekends that difference isn't as extreme?)

Also, probably naive question—why was Dune's Thursday weekly drop so much larger than its drops for the rest of the week? Is it just because it lost screens to Ghostbusters? (I.e. I'm trying to predict if it's likely that there are any more >50% drops next week—seems like it's possible if next Thursday it loses even more screens to GxK?)

Thursday preview showings for Ghostbusters hurt Panda & Dune. It will be interesting to see how those films play on the weekend.

Any chance it comes close to $40M in Japan in order for the film to hit $1B? Seems unlikely to me but Japan does have a connection to the film no other country can claim and that might be enough to drive it higher than expected.

They should keep re-releasing it in North America, Europe, China, and wherever else. $1 billion would eventually happen, lol

Al Pacino explaining that Best Picture presentation:

It was poorly done, not just by the Producers but by Pacino as well. The whole "my eyes see Oppenheimer" with a question mark tone in his voice. Very weird. Nobody was sure if he was joking or what. Compare this with older days. Harrison Ford in 1994: "The Oscar for Best Picture of 1993 goes to...Schindler's List" and he says it with full authority.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Nolan's two nominations for Best Director happened with World War II era dramas. Spielberg could at least get nominated for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T.  The Directors Branch is so highbrow now.

That's true, but I think they will give James Cameron the Best Director trophy on his final Avatar movie. He will have spent around 30 years on the Avatar projects, so I think they will want to reward him for having such a big impact with those movies.

The other one I could see is Greta Gerwig with her final Barbie movie. Let's say she does a very strong trilogy and everyone knows she is finished with Barbie after 3 movies. I could see them jumping on board to give her a trophy for that.

On Xitter, Scott Mendelson mentioned that Oppenheimer is the first Best Picture winner to gross $400+ million worldwide since The King's Speech. There was so much disbelief in the comments because since that Oscars night, the internet has done nothing but bash TKS as a so-so PBS special Weinstein brainwashed voters into liking. When in reality, it got critical raves and the public preferred it to The Social Network at the box office. Sometimes winning Oscars can be the worst thing for a movie or person's long-term reputation.

I really like The King's Speech and don't mind it winning Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Script. I probably would have given Best Supporting Actor to Geoffrey Rush and Best Supporting Actress to Helena Bonham Carter. All three of the main actors in that film were awesome.

I probably would have given Best Director to David Fincher over Tom Hooper, who made some bad choices with the camera that distracted from the GREAT performances by his actors. It's a weird thing. He did a great job getting the strong performances from the actors, but then he chose to use really distracting camera angles that didn't do justice to the movie or the actors IMHO. David Fincher always delivers top notch stuff with his movies, both in terms of visuals and the acting performances.

Biggest problem with the 2010-2011 awards season was Chris Nolan getting left off the Best Director list after what he did with Inception. Straight up outrageous. At that point it felt like they were going out of their way to say "fuck you" to him for no good reason, especially after the snubs on The Dark Knight and The Prestige.

I see it's been decided Poor Things is the Awards Season Villain after the fact lmao. These manufactured "controversies" always disappear the day after the Oscars are over. How many people have called La La Land a "white savior movie" in the 7 years since it lost (spoiler alert: zero)?

I suspect the Barbie fans won't forget Poor Things sweeping those technical categories. As a Batman fan, I still haven't forgotten Slumdog Millionaire sweeping a bunch of technical categories it should not have won against TDK (Cinematography in particular).

Poor Things was definitely 2nd place for BP right? 3rd place feels harder to guess but I'm gonna guess Zone of Interest maybe.

Sounds about right, but I think it’s pretty close overall for the #2 spot between Poor Things, Zone of Interest, American Fiction, and Anatomy of a Fall. Very strong Top 5 movies in the running this year.

Not saying he should do it.   But dam I want his Bond Movie. Sure we sort of got it with both Inception and Tenet.  Him and the guy who presented him with his Oscar tonight have both been turned down by the Broccoli's for wanting too  much control.

Tenet, Inception, and his Batman movies all have James Bond elements in them. I hope he will stay away from franchise material.
