Surprising to see you say this when you’re a huge fan of Jurassic World. That movie is 9 years old and showed very early signs of great WOM with the Saturday & Sunday numbers. Same thing with Avengers in 2012. Same thing with Inception in 2010. It’s not like we are talking about the Dark Ages, lol
Facebook has been around for 20 years. Twitter has been around for 15 years. I distinctly remember Twitter WOM being a big deal with Inception’s opening in 2010. The Avengers in 2012 and Jurassic World in 2015 both showed early signs of very strong WOM with better numbers than expected on their opening Saturdays. I don’t believe WOM is traveling faster right now than it did in 2015 with Jurassic World.
They've needed more PLF screens for a long time. But it's a huge investment and theaters don't make enough money to justify this expense. They are also very dependent on the studios to put out high quality movies that people want to watch. That's a massive problem for theater owners & investors, since they have zero control over the quality of films being pumped out each month.
I appreciate your input. I bought a ticket to see Dune Part 2 on the upcoming Tuesday. Nice discounted price on a pretty good size screen. I watched Dune Part 1 at home the other day and it was pretty boring IMHO. I'm hoping the sequel plays a lot better for me.
I’m surprised how it has turned out, especially since a July release date is usually a death sentence for winning Oscars.
There are a lot of very good movies in the competition. It seems to be a case where the non-Oppy vote is chopped up across too many other movies. No consolidation for a clear #2 option.
Yep, that's how it goes in the consolidation game. My company in the oil business did similar stuff. We acquired smaller companies, and eventually the executives cashed out by selling the whole thing to a much bigger company. They got a bunch of really fat stock options in their pockets as soon as the company got sold, which is exactly what Zaslav and his buddies are wanting to do.
You’re right about all of that. I do think Cameron will eventually get some major awards with the Avatar franchise, maybe for the final movie like we saw with LOTR3 & Peter Jackson.
I am curious to see what happens with Dune Part 2 in the major categories. They already gave Dune Part 1 a total of 6 Oscars in technical categories. That’s really impressive.
Or Best Picture. Would be cool as hell to see Matthew hand that award to Nolan and his wife Emma.
I am wondering if last year’s Best Director duo will handle the Director category. They are big Nolan fans and did a recent Q&A thing with him where they said he was a major influence on their filmmaking.
The other Best Director guys that would be appropriate are George Lucas, Steve Spielberg, Michael Mann, or Ridley Scott. All of these guys had a big impact on Nolan and I’m sure he would love to be on stage with them.
Perceived “frontrunner” status can lead to people voting for other movies since they figure Oppy will have plenty of support from other voters. I don’t mind if that happens in Best Picture, but I’m hoping it doesn’t happen to Nolan in the Best Director category.
