  1. 17th City of God (Brazil) 6 Votes: 203 Points 2020 Position: 10th I have seen the eyes of God, and they burn my soul with pink. Ah the film that I always confuse with Kingdom of Heaven even though they are very different. One of the plucky outsiders from last time out makes another big stab at the top 10, but this time they fall a little short. Whether this is a downward trajectory for the future remains to be seen... That adds a 16th country to the list. The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 6 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia 1 - Brazil
  2. I have decided to try and complete this list, the Max Power way... 18th Memories of Murder (KOrea) 12 Votes: 202 Points 2020 Position: 14th Looks like a lovely walk in the country... The birth of the Bong-Song connection A strong film by a strong director starring a very strong actor. Seems a good top 20 shout to me. That likely sews up 4th place for Korea. Although I would have hoped they would be closer to 10 by now. The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 6 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  3. Disclaimer: If you are sensitive to angry, yet correct takes regarding a beloved animation that many people love but fills me with the bile of a thousand gall bladders, skip this entry. You can see the title, just assume that nothing positive was said. 19th My Neighbour Totoro (Japan) 10 Votes: 200 Points 2020 Position: 29th Curse it, curse you all. This totoro rat abomination will doom us all!! This. This beat Grave of the Fireflies. The stupid smiling giant rat waiting for a nightmare bus in the rain. Mama always told me if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. With that said... The real list we all care about: 24 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia No, no, no screw that! 1 point. I fecking bastard point. That is how much this sewer water smoothie of a disgrace beat the best animated film of all time by. How? Why? I am going to paint a 40 foot high sad Will Smith face on the face of the moon for this. Nothing happens in this film. Nothing? There is no film here. Just a stupid rat sleeping and waiting for a bus. It is the worst. THE WORST. Damn everything about this film. But I am not bitter,
  4. 20th Grave of the Fireflies (Japan) 8 Votes: 199 Points 2020 Position: 12th I was dreading this poster creation, but it is not that bad. Yeah fuck putting any of the big scenes in here and putting myself through that in this cafe. This is my personal top animated film of all time and I think I placed it 4th or 5th on my personal list here. I think it is a fantastic film and am kind of sad to see it drop a few places when all the Ghibli also rans are blasting 100 places up the list from last time out. Yeah, a 4th Italian film was clearly a bridge too far. Maybe one day Pinnochio will get some love? The real list we all care about: 23 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  5. 21st In the Mood for Love (Hong Kong) 7 Votes: 194 Points 2020 Position: 13th I can't look away from her eyes. Add an outraged girlfriend and you have an internet meme in that freezeframe. Is this the start of the HongKongassaince? (There needs to be a resurgence just because that is a cool sounding word). We are finally back in the 21st century (although technically 2000 is not the 21st century but the end of the twentieth century as there is no year zero yadda yadda). Either way, I assume that this is not a kicky, punchy, fighty game, but a love story. Remember back when Germany was free and away on its own with 4 films? feels like an age ago doesn't it? i am almost expecting Italy to be next now. (I have also rounded up the stragglers that somehow were clipped from some recent entries.) The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Hong Kong 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  6. 22nd Persona (Sweden) 6 Votes: 193 Points 2020 Position: 35th Looks more like Grimm than Sweden https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfPjC2Fbd3w Wow, Atlas Studios really did veer a lot from the source material for the games. Seems like this has the dialogue of a French film. Sex sex sex, is that all any film ever wants to talk about these days...er those days. Whatever happened to the good old days of 20 to 30 years after this film released? Jokes aside, Sweden has had decent representation in both lists and therefore if one is looking to experiment with a new filmmaking nation from the pre-colour times, maybe this can be a decent place to start. No sooner does Germany break free of the pack, the pack makes its own move back. Next you'll be telling me there are even other Hong Kong and Italian films out there. The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 4 - Germany 4 - Sweden 3 - Italy 3 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  7. 23rd M (Germany) 8 Votes: 183 Points 2020 Position: 85th What is? That is? I am assuming the actual film does not have a giant soldier ant? Also not a James Bond origin story. There have been a lot of near 100 year old European films recently. That is a pretty big surprise for me. Not that these films are good/bad, just that films from so long ago are still holding their own alongside the deluge of cartoons, sing songs, and Koreans doing crazy fuck-genre stuff. Germany breaks free of the 3 movie group to get on the top 5 list and... is there another German film left to bring it up to Korea? The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 4 - Germany 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  8. 24th Hard Boiled (Hong Kong) 9 Votes: 181 Points 2020 Position: 41st Oh yeah, Hong Kong is a part of this. I forgot So not a sequel to Sausage Party then? This is the dove dude right? Then this is probably good fun. I mean, no Face Off level good, but good none the less. That is probably enough to make it a good recommendation if you want to see people shoot/kick fools for 95 minutes. Hong Kong has arguably been hit harder than Italy in the years since the first list. Only 3 feels like a massive drop off compared to before. Although Hong Kong does seems to have an India like issue of fans of the nation's output spread their love over a lot more films compared to France and Japan. The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 3 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  9. Sorry for the delay folks. As an aside, I think I am still on course for getting through this list without a single not cool reaction, which is nice. Especially considering how thoroughly obnoxious I am being towards films I do not like / have not seen.
  10. 25th La Grande Illusion (France) 7 Votes: 180 Points 2020 Position: 89th One man, armed with his trusty grappling hook, will scale that little tower behind him! Much near century old Frenchness incoming... A film that I assume centres around some form of magic trick that is of a significant size. The man in the Youtube thumbnail looks as smug as Joan looked terrifying. What i am taking away from this list is that apart from Japanese cartoons and Indian musicals, we seem to collectively feel that international cinema peaked in about 1958. Another big riser from France as this increases by about 60 or so places and now puts a lot of pressure on India for that number 2 spot. The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 13 - France 5 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  11. 26th Passion of Joan of Arc (France) 5 Votes: 180 Points 2020 Position: 193rd Well that has more colour than the film does. That actress has nightmare eyes I can only assume that @Plain Old Tele has about 4 alternate accounts because somehow a silent French film has blitzed its way up the list at a rate never seen before. If I wanted to read in French, I would have been born French. 170 place rise is... it must be the record right? That is just madness. The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 12 - France 5 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  12. 27th Belle (Japan)6 Votes: 178 Points 2020 Position: Not Eligible Remind me never to rely on AI for anything, ever. I mean, congratulations on placing so high, but you're not even the best film called Belle. It's not Kurosawa or ghibli, but its still pretty standard Japanese entry fayre. A young pretty girl who nobody thinks is pretty turns out to be lovely and everybody love her except when the plot decides somebody should and then some zany nightmare creatures get involved to bring the film to conclusion. Or at least I assume, the thing above is enough to ensure that I will never know for sure. Forget 25, Japan may hit 30 at this rate. The real list we all care about: 22 - Japan 14 - India 11 - France 5 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  13. 28th Train to Busan (Korea)10 Votes: 177 Points 2020 Position: 15th Well they got the train part at least. The first film that I have both seen and liked since number 38! This is a good film. It is what Korea does well, take a concept that people expect they know what they are getting and then give them something different. Was a shame that Peninsula just turned out to be aggressively fine, but this was a solid film that put eyes on Korean cinema (although clearly not enough) and that is always a good thing. That brings Korea up to 5 and probably ensures its spot as 4th in this list. Perhaps a little disappointing that double digits looks so far away. The real list we all care about: 20 - Japan 14 - India 11 - France 5 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  14. 29th Baahubali: The Conclusion (India) 8 Votes: 175 Points 2020 Position: 28th It has taken 70 posters, but that one is actually pretty cool looking. Well that was some fun silliness. The concluding four hours of a near 6, 7? 8 hour epic, this biggest India film that was going to change your perceptions on Indian cinema forever until RRR comes along to change your perceptions on Indian cinema forever in preparation for whatever comes out in a year or two that will to change your perceptions on Indian cinema forever. Surely too little too late for India as it hit 14, but that gap to France is now probably the main concern going into these last 25 or so reveals. The real list we all care about: 20 - Japan 14 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR)
  15. 30th Rashomon (Japan) 7 Votes: 175 Points 2020 Position: 19th Multiple takes on the same story... Gotta Watch 'em All One of the few Japanese Black and White films that I actually kind of may want to see one day. Having been gone for a few days, I feel like I need to go hard with this take on Rashomon and give the hottest of hot takes that will put all of the internet ablaze! So here goes, I wouldn't object to giving this one a try one day. Japan brings up the big 2-0 and it is becoming a rout now. The real list we all care about: 20 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  16. 31st Your Name (Japan) 6 Votes: 174 Points 2020 Position: 17th I would happily spend 4 hours watching whatever that poster is about that sit through this again. The only thing worse than this is the impending dread that the one anime that is even worse, is likely still to come. I wanted to like this film. It had a cool premise, good voice acting, and a good art style. Sadly, it has an abhorrent final third that ruins everything and I can only assume that most viewers went and took a shower or something while that was all happening. Japan now approaches 20 films on the list. Is 25 or even 30 on the table right now? The real list we all care about: 19 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  17. 32nd Yojimbo (Japan) 8 Votes: 172 Points 2020 Position: 77th That is one imposing samurai dude This is one I have heard of. No idea what it is about, although black and white kurosawa makes me assume it is an angry samurai on a quest to prove something. (The big green samurai poster is also a clue on that front. I assumed this did better last time out, but it turns out that this is a pretty big raise from last time out. The real list we all care about: 18 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  18. 33rd The Raid (Indonesia) 7 Votes: 169 Points 2020 Position: 31st And all those men were beaten to a pulp by one angry office worker. There is a big building and it is raided. It seems like pure lowest common denominator violence, but very well done common denominator violence. There is a lot of fighting and punching and kicking and maybe some tweaking and twirking. Who knows? Stays flat from last time around and adds to the small pool of one nation wonders. The real list we all care about: 17 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway 1 - Indonesia
  19. 34th Das Boot (Japan) 7 Votes: 167 Points 2020 Position: 22nd [/url] That looks like a pretty fun lil' boat. Seems like the shoe is on the other foot here. I remember growing up wondering how there can be a famous film about a shoe. This film is classic enough that I have at least heard of. I think it is about the Navy and stuff going slightly awry. But alas, it is impossible fore me to ever find out. And with that, Germany is now only 14 films off the lead! It all changes here . The real list we all care about: 17 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 3 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
  20. 35th Ikiru (Japan) 6 Votes: 167 Points 2020 Position: 134th The thrilling story of an empty room. Feels like Kurosawa hasn't turned up in a while. The film of a Japanese man rocking a pretty darn cool hat. Perhaps the best hat in Japanese cinema? I can't really give much more insight than that, but to be honest, what more do you need other than a hat. Japan is pretty much running away with this now, so it's more a case of every Japanese film revealed is one non-Indian/French film revealed. The real list we all care about: 17 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
  21. 36th Diabolique (Actually France) 7 Votes: 165 Points 2020 Position: 38th Looks like Sweeney Todd: Business Lunch So is this kind of like French Hitchcock? Let's be clear, I say this as a person who has yet to find a Hitchcock film they like. But the curiosity was there. And if anything, this film allowed me to complete the multi-entry arching, hilarious joke that is cleverly self-deprecating in regard to my Tokyo Story mix up. Maybe I should also give Russia a bonus point? Either way, France keeps India in its sights and hits 11 films for real this time. The real list we all care about: 16 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
  22. 37th Baahubali: The Beginning (Also Not France) 10 Votes: 164 Points 2020 Position: 47th I remember when this film was the biggest thing going, or at least felt like it. I should get around to watching this some day. But then it also has a sequel, so that means like 6-7 hours I need to put aside, and I don't have that kind of time. Otherwise how would I be able to do important stuff like Platinum Hades. (Note to all. DO NOT DO THIS! IT IS HELL) India is now back to being as close to Japan as it is to France (Is that true Geographically too? I feel like it could be pretty close. maybe its a tad closer to Japan) The real list we all care about: 16 - Japan 13 - India 10 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
  23. 38th Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Not France) 8 Votes: 164 Points 2020 Position: 110th THe film has robots now? This was the first Miyazaki film I watched that I actually thought was a classic. Spirited Away is good, Mononoke is very good. Wind Rises is fine. Howl is terrible, and he has another that is even worse. However, this film is top tier animation. People should really check this one out. And the Ghibli wave continues as another film enters the top 100. At least this time, I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. The real list we all care about: 16 - Japan 12 - India 10 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
  24. 39th Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (India) 4 Votes: 164 Points 2020 Position: 30th A very generic poster for what I hope is not a generic film. Ah I forget that SRK was as young as the characters he plays once. I have not seen this one, but I have faith that a film led by SRK is going to have some decent quality to it. It is also nice to see London, but that is a me thing. India gets separation from France again (Who knew a film called Tokyo Story could be from Japan eh?) The real list we all care about: 15 - Japan 12 - India 10 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
