  1. I hesitated to openly pin it as one before but based on the SXSW reactions I'm gonna say Civil War is a contender here. I think its apparent "apolitical" tone and focus on journalism makes it friendly enough to middlebrow Oscar voters to make up for whatever squicky Garland imagery might be in it. I just hope it's not too true to life by the time voting comes around.
  2. "Cultural impact" isn't just defined as how much the openly nerdy subculture embraces an IP. Whatever you think people's motivation for showing up for sequels is, the fact that they do is evidence of it. There wasn't a whole lot of Top Gun extended lore or convention merch before Maverick came out, but clearly the movie and concept still had a certain subconscious appeal for many.
  3. SXSW Headliner audience award winner SXSW Audience Award Winners Include 'Monkey Man,' 'Bob Trevino Likes It' (deadline.com)
  4. On Disney+ April 3 'Wish' Gets Streaming Release Date on Disney+ (variety.com) If there's any justice in the world that's when the reappraisal begins
  5. https://thefilmstage.com/richard-linklater-casts-zoey-deutch-as-jean-seberg-in-his-french-new-wave-film/ Under paywall but corroborating report that film is in production: https://www.screendaily.com/news/richard-linklaters-nouvelle-vague-among-first-2024-recipients-of-cnc-funding/5191680.article
  6. They really are quite economically dependent on each other even if the political rhetoric suggests otherwise. Frankly I think it'd be refreshing to see someone make an effort to cut above the noise and attempt to speculate about it with an individual, humanistic focus. In a way I think a third party observer who's not a US citizen might be better suited for taking that approach. This seems to be in a similar vein to Children of Men, which was directed by a Mexican and set in a war torn UK.
  7. It does seem like if there's gonna be a "controversy", it's going to involve film twitter getting uppity about whether or not it's sending the "correct" message and if it condemns their enemies to a satisfying enough degree. That could be very very annoying in its own way but I don't think that would necessarily be a detriment to box office or sow security concerns. I do think Garland conceived this movie with the intent of having timeliness 20-30 years from now, long after the specific political issues of the day are relegated to history books.
  8. He has a lot more to say than that thinkpiece written by someone who hasn't evidently seen the film does, I'm sure
  9. I would say Denzel Washington is probably the biggest acting hook it has, though depends on how much of a role he's got (I'm assuming it's a fairly meaty one as a mentor/friend though)
  10. If this made as much as Sound of Freedom A24 would be ecstatic
  11. This is really how it's always been. No actor is gonna be a draw in whatever role they play, but if they help sell an overarching creative vision I think that counts as starpower. The "starpower is dead" narrative was always kind of reductive and shortsighted, but I do think it matters moreso now with all the previously reliable franchise IP machines in flux and studios now leaning more on personalities to draw interest to unproven products. Dune could very well have been a critically drubbed bomb if it didn't have the modern entry point that Tim and Zendaya bring.
  12. I would say I don't see the Blade Runner scenario happening but given the budget rumors it seems it could draw a really sizable audience and still be a "bomb". Though Villeneuve's career didn't suffer post-Blade Runner, so I doubt anyone would hold it against Ridley if people still think it's a great film.
  13. There's a lot of stuff with mid-range potential; honestly I like the uncertainty of this year. April essentially looks like the kind of creator and concept driven slate that jaded Film Twitter has been demanding for so long, and we already know at least two of them are gonna have their artistic support; three if you count Fall Guy in early May.
  14. Like it or not, modern starpower sells. She's bringing in the crowd who doesn't typically go for solemn literary epics.
