I think it's probably safe to say that it's unlikely to recover enough to match the legs of those films, but it's still aiming for the ¥5 billion (~$45 million) blockbuster milestone, which is certainly nothing to be disappointed about. >Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic continues to hold very well in the face of numerous new releases, and if it has a strong final week of Spring Break, is still on target for a ¥4 billion (~$35 milllion) total. After 23 days in release, the 37th entry in the long-running franchise has sold 2,288,809 admissions. If it reaches ¥4 billion, it'll become only the second film in the franchise to accomplish the feat (after last year's film). >Daytime Shooting Star managed to make the Top 5 in a very, very close battle with two of the other weekend debuts. Directed by Takehiko Shinjo, and starring Mei Nagano, Shohei Miura, and Aran Shirahama, the live-action adaptation of the shojo manga sold 145,676 admissions across 273 screens over the weekend frame. And since opening on Friday, brings its 3-day admissions to 218,251. Legs are typically solid for shojo films release in the Spring, so I expect a total comfortably above ¥1 billion (~$10 million). >Kamen Rider X Super Sentai: Ultra Superhero War, the 55th theatrical release in the Kamen Rider series, debuts in sixth place and within expectations. The latest film, the first of the tri-annual release strategy, sold 144,347 admissions over the weekend across 309 screens. Its debut is solid, and fairly standard for the cross over series, but the frontloaded nature of the series will prevent it from reaching ¥1 billion (~$10 million), so look for a total around ¥800 million ($7 million+). >Policeman and Me only comes in seventh place over the weekend, but distributor Shochiku is likely satisfied with its decent opening. Also based on a shojo manga, the live-action adaptation sold 141,017 admissions over the weekend on 303 screens. As I mentioned above, legs for shojo films during Spring Break are usually good, so a total of ¥1 billion (~$10 million) is possible. >Passengers rounds out the openers that made the Top 10, having to settle for a disappointing ninth place ranking. Expectations weren't particularly good, but the sizable screen count and release date are indications that Sony was expecting better. The Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence lead film only sold 92,488 admissions over the weekend frame on 499 screens. And since opening on Friday, brings its 3-day admissions up to 124,397. It'll be prone to early screen/showtime cuts given its under-performance, so legs are probably going to be lackluster, so look for a total of ¥500-600 million ($4-5 million) or so. >And finally, well out of the Top 10 now, Your Name. is still hanging on fairly well (around 15/16th place). The SAO Movie Project, based on the very popular multi-media hit series, is bound to be one of Aniplex's biggest hits ever. >One Week Friends, the live-action adaptation of the manga series, debuts this weekend and is looking in good shape. It'll make the Top 3, but Partners IV will keep it from earning the silver over the weekend. >Doctor Strange and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children are the only imported films in the Top 10, and both will continue their solid performances, respectively. Marvel's latest is climbing closer to that ¥2 billion milestone, a notable mark for any DC/Marvel film to reach. And Tim Burton's latest is going to comfortably exceed the ¥1 billion milestone by the end of the month, giving Burton another successful film in the market. >Your Name. will achieve its 26th-consecutive week in the Top 10, the half-year milestone, tying up the record set by Spirited Away. Next weekend is quite weak, the calm before the Spring Box Office Season begins next month, so a 27th-consecutive week, at the very least, is almost guaranteed as well, thus setting a new record.

Corpse Saturday Update: >Partners: The Movie IV performed very well, and is very likely to achieve the biggest opening of 2017 so far. I predicted an opening around ¥400 million ($3.5 million), but it may come in closer to ¥450/500 million ($4-5 million). >Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children held nicely, down less than 25% compared to last Saturday. It and Doctor Strange will be in a very close battle for second place this weekend. >Survival Family performed as expected and is still aiming for a debut of ¥150 million ($1.3 million), or maybe slightly less. >Your Name. may be back to minuscule drops again after experiencing a couple weeks of large 20/30% declines, being down less than 5% compared to last Saturday in its 25th week of release. >Allied is proving that Brad Pitt still has some drawing power in the market since it'll comfortably make the Top 10 this weekend (7th/8th place). Its low screen count, however, will hinder it a bit. >And finally, if anything surprises and makes the bottom of the Top 10, it's going to be the live-all-night screening of Yuri!!! On Ice with Yuri K., Victor and Yuri P. Roppongi Hills Cinema held an all-night screening of the entire first season for fans with discussion with the anime's voice cast. The all-night screening was relayed live to 47 other theaters in Japan, and its admissions for Saturday were easily enough to make the Top 10, selling through nearly 70% of its available tickets. Whether or not it makes the weekend Top 10, since it was a one-night-only event, remains to be seen, but if its ticket prices were high enough, it may just make it. The incredibly popular sports anime, that has achieved popularity on a worldwide scale, about male figure ice skating is becoming one of the hottest anime properties in recent years with international athletes taking on voice roles, participating in marketing and advertising, and more.

Secondly: Full Weekend Actuals weren't released, for some reason, this past week, so some of this Weekend's Forecast is based on Weekend Estimates. >Partners: The Movie IV, the fourth main series film, and sixth overall, in the popular Aibou (Partners) franchise will easily debut atop the weekend box office and may achieve the biggest debut of 2017 so far. The fourth film, along with its predecessors, is based on the very popular TV drama series of the same name, which will be entering its 16th season later this year. >Doctor Strange continues to hold on quite well for a DC/Marvel film, and might break the ¥1.5 billion mark over the weekend. Most DC/Marvel films struggle to reach a multiplier of 5, or barely reach it, but the Doctor is going to comfortably exceed that number and might climb closer to 6 (6 is still below average in the market, but impressive for the genre). >Your Name. is entering its 25th weekend of release, and will achieve its 25th-consecutive weekend in the Top 10 as well - and by the looks of things, it might earn a weekend increase, too, thus setting another weekend record (highest 25th weekend). It's now only one more consecutive weekend in the Top 10 away to tie the record set by Spirited Away, and it's very likely to tie it, but can it beat it and earn 27-consecutive weeks in the Top 10, or more? Probably. >In This Corner of the World is still showing no signs of losing anyone's interest yet, and will enjoy its 14th-consecutive weekend in the Top 10 without ever even being in the Top 5, not once! It's going to exceed ¥2 billion this weekend, which is an absolutely remarkable achievement for a smaller-scale animated film released through an independent studio.

Corpse Full Weekend Actuals are taking awhile to come in this week for some reason. I'll wait another day before posting anything, in hopes that they'll be available tomorrow. If they're not, I'll post what's available tomorrow. A few notes ahead of any numbers: >Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children came in second place as estimates suggested, however, it managed to edge out Dr. Strange in weekend admissions (~5,000 difference). Dr. Strange repeats atop the box office in terms of revenue for a second weekend. >In This Corner of the World missed out on the Top 5 (ranking 6th), but regardless of that, it continues an incredible performance in the Top 10 and has seen significant increases over the past several days. As a result, I believe it's siphoning some of Your Name.'s audience. This is going to make it much harder for Your Name. to surpass Frozen and Titanic if it's unable to recover from the -20/30% drops, its largest to date, it's been experiencing the past couple weeks. The 40th Japan Academy Prize Ceremony is on March 3rd, and Your Name. will likely need a sweep (Director, Screenplay, Animation, and Music, the first three at least) to receive another boost at the box office, one it'll probably need to surpass Frozen and Titanic. A director of an animated film has never won Best Director or Screenplay, both of which Shinkai is nominated, so I'm sure it'd be a news-worthy accomplishment if Shinkai/Your Name. wins these; which should give the film a boost that could then push it into the Spring Break box office season in late-March.

Strange should be able to reach that new goal, and finish around ¥2.1/2.2 billion ($19/20 million) or so. >Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children finally releases in Japan nearly half-a-year after its initial release worldwide last year, and posted a solid debut even if it missed the #1 spot. Tim Burton has a dedicated fanbase in Japan, and the market is frequently one of the best for his films, so a successful return for Miss Peregrine was expected. The film's earnings from Japan are particularly noteworthy, too, since its debut this weekend pushed it above the $200 million mark at the foreign box office. Also, it's fallen about $14 million shy (now $11/12 million) of reaching the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office, but Japan can probably get it over that milestone (barely), too. >Your Name. enjoyed its 24th weekend of release very much still in the Top 5 as it nears half-a-year in release, and based on estimates, managed to remain above the ¥100 million mark. It easily recorded the biggest 24th weekend of all-time, breaking Spirited Away's record. And after this weekend it'll need 3 more weeks in the Top 5, and 3 more consecutive weeks in the Top 10, to break Spirited Away's records in both categories. >In This Corner of the World...the film that just keeps on ticking. This weekend marks its 13th-consecutive weeks in the Top 10, and while that's an impressive achievement of its own, it's done so without ever having a weekend above, or even near, ¥100 million. Hell, if estimates hold, this will be its first weekend even in the Top 5 since it debuted. The incredible success of this film began on just 46 screens when it debuted, later expanding to almost 200 screens (still just a moderate count) several weeks later. Its now hit a multiplier of 39.9... 39.9; granted, it received a major expansion, but it's absolutely remarkable nonetheless and its performance is easily among the best of the past decade already.

Very impressive. The latest entry in the MCU sold 237,722 admissions over the weekend frame across 785 screens, and since Friday has sold 313,354 admissions after three days in release. Superhero films carry a certain amount of frontloading with them, but this one's a lock for ¥1 billion (typically a struggle for most superhero films), and should comfortably reach ¥1.5 billion+ (~$15 million). >Your Name. slips to third place after reclaiming the #1 spot in its 22nd weekend last week, and easily claims the biggest 23rd weekend of all-time by besting Spirited Away's previous record by over 46%. Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon has now sold a staggering 18,351,883 admissions after 23 weeks in release. It has, however begun to slow a bit on a week-to-week basis, and with just a couple individual holidays to take advantage of in February, it's probably not going to overtake Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing/most-attended film of all-time. It still has a clear path to eventually surpassing both Frozen and Titanic, though, to reach the #2 spot on the all-time list. Only time will tell where the film ends its run. >Kiseki: Sobito of That Day performed very well, selling 182,044 admissions over the weekend on only 156 screens. The band, GReeeeN, haven't produced as many hits in recent years as they were once known for, but they clearly still have a dedicated fanbase with this impressive start.

If Your Name. reclaims the top spot, it'll achieve its tenth non-consecutive week atop the box office charts. >The openers were duds, unsurprising for this time of year, though only one (Drowning Love) ended up having potential at a ¥100 million start in the end, and it's a very borderline estimate. >High & Low: The Red Rain appears to have resurface in the Top 10, thanks to an increase on Sunday versus last Sunday. I haven't been tracking it closely, but I'm guessing there were some stage greetings or some other event taking place yesterday. Whatever the case, it was able to boost the film enough to get it to/over the ¥1 billion milestone.

Based on estimates, compared to its predecessors, its opening weekend is up over 2006's Death Note by ~5%; ~44% behind 2006's The Last Name; ~25% behind L: Change the World from 2008. Overall, I'd consider Light Up the New World's opening mostly successful, if it ends up above the first Death Note film, but it's also noticeably lower than the last two entries in the series. I wouldn't have expected it to match the second film's opening (a lot of anticipation surrounded it), but being down 25% compared to the 2008's spin-off is a bit disappointing. >Your Name. is finally dethroned after spending nine-consecutive weeks atop the box office. However, on a weekend where every other holdover suffered severe drops, Makoto Shinkai's uber-blockbuster still managed a great hold. Its estimated tenth weekend is the third biggest of all-time, only behind Spirited Away's and Frozen's. And after nine weeks in release, it's not just ~¥200 million shy of becoming the seventh highest grossing film of all-time, and has sold over 13.1 million admissions in the process, becoming the ninth most-attended film of all-time. >Inferno was looking in pretty good shape heading into the weekend frame after a respectable Friday showing, but it just kinda of fizzled out over the weekend and winded up being a major disappointment. The third film in this series' estimated opening weekend is down a whopping ~79% from The Da Vinci Code, and a significant ~51% compared to Angels & Demons, too.

In its sixth weekend, it reached about 43% capacity over the weekend (up 2% versus last weekend). >Scoop! debuts within expectations. >The Angry Birds Movie wasn't expected to do well, but I believe this is a lot lower than expected given Toho-Towa gave it quite the wide release.
