  2. I'll be honest, I went into this wanting to hate it, wanting to call it out for it being a giant pile of Oscar bait. I wanted to call it out for being yet another safe, exploitative biopic vying for Oscar consideration with over the top performances, and this movie really, truly earned my love. If this is repetitive Oscar bait so be it, it had me at the verge of tears for nearly the whole movie, and not for being dramatic, but for being so completely subtle. While no, this is definitely not a perfect movie, and there are times where it feels like the pace is moving a little to briskly, but then again isn't that time? His honeymoon moments at the beginning are all so brief in the story its telling and I do believe that is in and of itself a small point to be made. The movie strives to be a lot (And to be a movie about Hawking it really has to incorporate all of those elements, they worked what needed to be worked), and it mostly achieves them. Yes, some of the beats aren't earned, but so many others are truly earned. As for performances, Redmayne and Jones are both captivating and my earlier doubts of their Oscar nominee chances have been extinguished. What I really loved was that there were no scenes in which I felt like the two were screaming, "Give me an Oscar," like many awards candidates do, they were completely honest. Redmayne certainly doesn't surpass Keaton's performance in Birdman, it really impressed me, I was not expecting that out of him. The score is also very pleasant and one of the better ones I have heard this year. Overall, this was possibly one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. A-/A
  3. You forgot Minions and furious 7, both of their predecessors were around 950m
  4. Well, I don't think Penguins is hurting Big Hero 6 to much.
  5. That's true, my problem with the Hobbit movies for example aren't necessarily that it strays from the book with all of the added content, but that I find the content that it does add to be blatantly quite bad and pointless. I also don't like being one of those people who say things like, "The movie was awful, this, this, and none of this actually happen in the story!" Film and book are two different mediums and thus they aren't going to be the same, a film adaption shouldn't be a word for word adaption of the book because what works on paper doesn't necessarily work on screen. I understand changing plotlines can be iffy, and I am definitely not always a fan of plotlines changing, but I can't make it a rule where the general plot stays in tact because then we would never have a movie like Jurassic Park which really only borrows the basic concepts from its novel. In general though it really depends on the novel if they should stay faithful to it or if major changes should be made. Some novels simply work better being put to screen while others don't (which is why changes need to be made). Also, some novels are very high quality and have great stories and so it'd be a waste to adapt them and not actually put the majority of whats in it on screen. Overall though, it's definitely not worth complaining if a movie isn't just like the book, only if the changes they make detract from the story being told on screen.

  8. I agree with you, but what's weird is as a book enthusiast of the Hobbit I really dislike it being split up because there isn't enough material for three movies.
  9. I felt Callaghan as a villain was rushed, you get a couple quick scenes and are expected to feel something about them.

  11. https://deadline.com/2014/11/indie-spirit-nominations-preview-likely-oscar-contenders-but-whats-up-with-that-imitation-game-shutout-1201296792/ Deadline mentions it was eligible. They just shut it out
  12. Maybe studios will make The Black Biopic Cinematic Universe.
  13. I think the audience is obviously there, CF obviously didn't deter them. I think that Mockingjay part 2 will have to be great in quality, have premium screens like IMAX (and maybe 3d), and actually have a marketing campaign
  14. Parts of it (everything that dealt with recovering from grief) were very well done, and Baymax was hilarious and lovable. In my opinion it's the origin story feel to it that brings it down, it gets a bit on the line of the cliche most of the Disney films have been following so it doesn't necessarily seem entirely fresh, especially when there's so many parallels to The Iron Giant. The soundtrack could also get overbearing, especially in the more emotional scenes. I know it's an animation but I could have definitely used less of it, especially since the track wasn't that memorable. I also thought the villain reveal wasn't really as shocking as it was supposed to be, I saw it coming from a long time before it happened, while that shouldn't be a complaint It's just disappointing given that Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph's villain reveals were so strong. I don't want to go off into a negative tangent though, I really did like the movie (there were many parts where I loved it). I feel like a mixture of this and httyd2 would have made a great film, in that the characterization was so much stronger in this film it just lacked the guts and elegance httyd2 had (while that lacked in build up characterization). Because of that I'll give it the same grade I gave httyd2. B+ My overall ranking of Disney's more recent efforts 1.Wreck-It Ralph 2.Tangled (close between these two) 3.Frozen 4.Big Hero 6 5.Bolt
  15. Except it's Sony and an Aunt May spy film script.
  16. Finished season 1 and the first episode of two. I hate Jaime, Joffrey, and Cersei and want them all to die. Personally, after Ned died I just want Daenerys to fly in on her dragons (when they get bigger) and kill everyone.
  17. Despite being eligible, The Imitation Game was completely shut out at the Spirit Awards. Not even a cumber nod.
  18. Oh wow, Im shocked they didn't nominated Birdman for editing. That lowers its Oscar prospects if it couldn't get in here. Also, no nominations for Inherent Vice or Foxcatchers although they did get special awards. Also, absolutely nothing for the Imitation Game. I even checked to see if it was eligible and it was, they completely shut it out.
  19. Mine was back in 2010 with the Hurt Locker, but my pick also won in 2008 and 2001. My personal wins 2014 - Gravity (so close) 2013 - Life of Pi (also close, second place) 2012 - The Descendants (however 2011 was so weak I really didn't care) 2011 - The Social Network (second place) 2010 - The Hurt Locker 2009 - Wall-E (Slumdog was my favorite of the noms, however it wasn't like that said much) 2008 - No Country For Old Men 2007 - Children of Men (Departed was my favorite of the noms though) 2006 - A History of Violence 2005 - Before Sunset 2004 - Finding Nemo (Return of the King was my second though) 2003 - City of God 2002 - Fellowship of the Ring 2001 - Gladiator
