who has seen Adam Wingard's You're Next and The Guest? These movies are the tits and it makes it disappointing that his foray into franchise filmmaking have been mediocre to poor without any of the style these earlier films showed.

I like GvK and GxK but man I wish those films were as impressive as Youre Next in terms of intensity/style. It doesn't even feel like the same guy most of the time. (Several moments in GvK come close though IMO).

  3. Fun times with the monsters (the apes are the MVPs!) and the human cast is serviceable but I found the climax so rushed that it doesn't do the set-up/stakes justice IMO. Just as it starts ramping up, the movie starts sprinting towards wrapping it up as well.

For comparison, the climaxes of G14-KOTM-GvK all felt like these massive setpieces/mini-movies in themselves: San Francisco-Boston-the extended Hong Kong battle. While in GXK:
The Hollow Earth gravity battle and Skar King finally making it to the surface world feels like the 2nd act culmination/lead in to a sprawling 3rd act, but the Rio battle was surprisingly short for me. I can't help but think of when the MUTOs/Ghidorah/MechaG all had their moments of "victory"/putting up a challenge for our heroes.

But enough of that, I'd also like to think of what I did enjoy:

    - various monsters battles sprinkled throughout
    - the monsters getting to shine and showing their personalities
    - nice build up to Skar King!
    - Godzilla and Shimo have short and sweet roles, nothing new for the genre.

Overall, I guess a 7/10 for me. (my rankings of the various Monsterverse movies are ever changing hahahaha)

I will still go to the movies, though. The experience can't be replaced by streaming. 🙂

Same. Even when friends say "but it'll be out on the internet in weeks/months", I just tell them the feeling in a theater just can't be replaced. (Plus ofc supporting the movies themselves!)

To the score discussion: I also believe that King of the Monsters score is vastly superior to all other MonsterVerse soundtracks. I like the music from G14, but theres no real banger track on it imo and Kong Skull Islands music feels like Hollywood blockbuster factory themes.

GvK though for me is the low point. Its way too bombastic all the times and its just - kind of tedious. I love Junkies score for Mad Max Fury Road, but it seems like with the MonsterVerse films he just doesnt try very hard which i think is unfortunate.

I like GvK, but I think if the score kept the same energy from the trailer ("Here We Go" + Godzilla starting to crawl unto the battleship = hype), the action scenes would have had a lot more impact.

  6. I think it's also important to point out that a lot of people became fans of Godzilla not because they thought "hey its a cool social allegory" but because they were kids who saw Godzilla and thought, "hey its a fire-breating dinosaur who fights other monsters!".

Of course, knowing the deeper themes behind the movies helps one appreciate & love the franchise more, but its the inherent appeal to children/families which made Godzilla into a truly lasting cultural icon/cash cow in the 1960s and 1990s.

ELEMENTAL probably had a theater increase. 2M is so close, argh. There are really no family movies this time of year. TMNT: MUTANT MAYHEM doesn't open until August 16th, I believe.

    August 23 pa 🥲
