  1. I dont think GvK is a very comparable situation to that of Annihilation & Mowgli. Even with the downright disappointing BO of KOTM, its still on track for at least $350M...couple that with K:SI's $566M gross and Im sure WB/Legendary are banking on name value to pique audience interest. Given that behind-the-scenes clashes of Annihilation involved conflicts as to making it more GA-friendly & less "complicated"...at least whoevers behind GvK know theyre trying to make a GA-friendly, action-heavy blockbuster with loads of licensing opportunities in the mix. GA appeal is something both WB/Legendary suits would want for something like this. Mowgli had its own issue of figuring out just who its intended audience was, as no matter its quality...BO comparisons to Disney's version would always pop up. Just my two cents.
  2. In terms of visuals, Edwards hands down. In terms of handling story & filmmaking as a whole, Id go with GvK's Adam Wingard. Sure, Blair Witch & Death Note werent very well-received, but his original ideas like Youre Next & The Guest are very enjoyable & fun genre films. Im hoping we get to see that side of Wingard for GvK.
  3. If anything, I think a Terry Rossio script would have a better human element than G14/KOTM.
  4. Edwards had an eye for visuals that was pretty much unmatched by most recent blockbuster directors. IMO expecting the same level of weight was always gonna be a long shot to begin with, but that doesnt mean KOTM lacks visual flair. In fact, a lot of the different VFX sequences peppered throughout the films shows us that Dougherty & co. put a lot of thought into what was put on-screen. We have the Antarctica sequence of Godzilla getting blasted-charging his breath-getting blasted in return and scenes like Mothra's emergence among others. Along with smaller, more colorful kaiju moments like Ghidorah's left head sniffing out soldiers & Rodan snapping up a jet pilot (a direct homage to The Giant Claw). KOTM is visually creative on a different level than G14 but the eye candy & money shots are still impressive and very much made with TLC. Couple that with the McReary's score and youve got some supercharged Toho-worthy imagery in a Hollywood blockbuster. Impressive stuff, Id say. I also like how in KOTM, monsters dominate the plot. When the monsters arent on screen, the characters are still talking about monsters, and the central family drama is tied into that. After some comments that Godzilla himself wasnt that involved in the plot of G14, its a nice change of pace to see KOTM begin & end with Godzilla along with shedding some light on his pseudobiology & behavior.
  5. This is really late, but anyway... Detective Pikachu opening weekend in PH: P56.7M Edit: Woah, I missed the original post of@forg about this. My bad 😅
  6. I actually wonder if the decision to release the well-received Claire De Lune teaser for Godzilla 2 around 10 months from release wasnt that good in hindsight when it came to building buzz.
  7. Yeah, Bryan Cranston was the ultimate GA hook. Reminds me of Pacific Rim's case back in 2013 when the trailers were enticing to a niche audience already on-board but not to a lot in the GA.
  8. Given that the OW audience turnout was around 70% male, yup...clearly a lot of work to be done towards making stories with more appeal. I guess that that was the reason MBB & Farmiga were cast but looks it didnt bring in much of an audience (ofc, reviews/GA reactions clearly had an effect on people on the fence).
  9. Does this imply that Aladdin still took the #1 spot?
  10. Watched it a second time, still like this a lot! The standout sequence for me would be the Rodan chase leading to the Ghidorah encounter. Goosebumps-inducing stuff, and a classic Toho tradition brought to life. The Ghidorah reveal with the lightning flashes and all with the Monarch crew staring in horror also carries the sequence as well!
  11. Great to hear!!! Btw are these nos. from World of KJ?
  12. A pulpy, globe-trotting adventure that really feels like a Toho film/Godzilla comic through Hollywood lenses. I honestly enjoyed the human aspect of the film! Reading the critic reviews, I braced for the worst...but even without keeping my expectations low going in, they were genuinely fun to watch for me. The acting definitely played a big part behind that!! Plus the central drama is well-handled especially for a Godzilla flick. Dialogue was cheesy and of the fun, summer blockbuster kind. As for the monsters...Ill admit I was bit underwhelmed with the fight scenes (guess that was an effect of my going over leaks and every released clip imaginable ) Gotta say though the sprinkling of monsters throughout was very very fun and I adored how the plot was nearly always centered about them & their effects on the characters and plot. Wouldnt have minded more monster shots though The Big 4 each had their moments and were definitely full of life!!!! What a job by Dougherty & co. The only scene I was annoyed with was when they had to rescue the last Monarch aircraft in Mexico while cutting in the Rodan/Ghidorah encounter. Its not the idea of cutting away that annoyed me, its just that the whole scene killed the momentum and felt too contrived IMO. Overall, as a whole I found KOTM to be easily a good film..but thinking about the G14 & KSI, I cant help but think they managed to better execute and stage their big moments & setpieces (like the big G14 Hawaii reveal or the quieter Kong/Mire Squid scene). Did things in KOTM feel a bit more...rushed? I cant really define it rn. Cant end without saying this: theres a clear love for the franchise on display here and that was incredible to see on the big screen. I cant see my score being lower than a very solid B+ for this, and I can easily imagine that score going up.
  13. Waking up to this BO news really wasnt the best way to start the day..but this post was just what I needed. Thanks
  14. Yup, Id be fine with a WW tally of $500m at this point.
  15. Dougherty says some more on Kong and reasons for the two monsters to fight in the interview.
