Nope. Annabelle: Creation, France was the third highest market for the original movie, I wonder if this one can at least stay flat?

    2PM Paris :

1- The Dark Tower (1014 admissions)

    3- Annabelle 2 (914 admissions)

Pretty low for both so. The Dark Tower is gonna do 300k admissions this week at best. Very hard to say for Annabelle tho. The first did 926 admissions but it was not during vacations. Conjuring 2 did 2567 admissions at the same hour... But we have to wait for the OD number to be sure...

We have the actual number of the Week (8/2 - 8/8):

    source: cine-directors.net

The Apes finally won the week, but Cars 3 was very close and finally is increasing a bit from the second movie. Valerian is doing a ok-ish drop (Wonder Woman did 50%, Dunkirk did 42%).

Despicable Me 3 is now the #1 of the year and will probably keep this position until Star Wars 8 (or maybe "C'est la Vie" the new movie of Intouchables directors could surprise).

Dunkirk is gonna finish around 2.5m it's not bad... but because of the story and the setting in France I was thinking it could come close to 4m...

On monday/tuesday only, Cars 3 was first, Valerian second and Apes was third.

Don't kid yourselves, Nolan would have shot Dunkirk in France no matter what.

Just found this interview of Dunkirk line producer John Bernard

“ ‘Riviera’ involves 130 shooting days in France, which is clearly happening because of the 30% rate,” says Bernard. “The same thing applies to the Christopher Nolan film, with a six-week shoot on location. Without the 30% rate, this would have been limited to a five-day shoot.”

That would be awful for Besson's film.

-50% is a normal drop for this kind of blockbuster, it's so silly the way you seem to enjoy every "dissapointing" number of Valerian. Yes a $200m movie which was the movie of a director lifetime is bombing, so funny isn't it ? A movie that employed more than 1500 people is bombing, let's enjoy that !

What would be awful is this Cars 3 number (it's not happening the movie is gonna do 750k at least I think, it has terrific previews numbers)

    1) Avengers: Infinity War : $510m ($210m)

People will get crazy as Guardians / Thor / Iron Man teamup. Trailer looks good, good potentiel. Will def make more than Civil War.

    2) The Incredibles 2 : $480m ($150m)

It's probably the only sequel of a Pixar people always wanted.

    3) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom : $440m ($190m)

Avengers 2 style I think, unnecessary sequel.

    4) Han Solo : $380m ($145m)

Less appealing than ROGUE ONE, May release + Jurassic World 2 two weeks after... = bad combo, still solid because of Star Wars

    5) Dr. Seuss' The Grinch : $325m ($80m)

The Grinch is probably the most popular noval of Dr Seuss + the power of Illumination = $$$

    6) Mary Poppins Returns : $310m ($58m)

Dis-nostalgia will help it, + perfect Christmas movie

    7) Deadpool 2 : $290m ($130m)

Still strong, but will disappoint I think, not fresh like the first was anymore.

    8) Fantastic Beasts 2 : $255m ($87m)

The first one had great legs, + Dumbledore

    9) Ant-Man and the Wasp : $235m ($85m)

The first one had great legs, + the true Civil War sequel ?

    10) Aquaman : $215m ($73m)

Weird super-hero + weird release date... Really depends on Justice League.

    Spoiler

    Black Panther : $210m ($80m)

    Mission Impossible 6 : $200m ($70m)

    Ralph Breaks the Internet : $200m ($55m)

Germany being somewhat kind to Besson.

    France....meh

    USA...a big fat middle finger.

You want to trash Valerian so much that what you're saying is absolutely non sense.

How France could be less kind to Besson than Germany with this Valerian opening (second biggest of the year) ?

that's what happens when you pre-sell the distribution rights to too many distributors/exhibitors and ask them to promote it. There is no quality control in the marketing. You don't know how your product is being sold and whether it will even get a proper release. Can't just expect to give bare minimum marketing and flood the theatres with showtimes. Then again...it didn't get proper release in many countries including mine where it has maximum 2 shows in best theatres at the worst possible times. Late night and morning. I am unable to catch it in theatres because of this. And to think this was supposed to release in 1000 screens in India...what a load of bollocks.

The thing is, thanks to this method, Europa Corp is not going to bankrupt because of Valerian. They just have to make tinnier movies again in order to have an other hit like Lucy that would gave them an other shot at making blockbuster.

Any news about Dunkirk's second weekend?

It just end its first week in France (925k admissions, slightly under Interstellar besides a bigger OD... anyway I think the wom should help him to get 2.3/2.5m admissions).

You won't have any news on its second weekend before Monday.

    I fully concur.

Trying to give Besson credit for the success of Dunkirk is the silliest thing I have seen so far in this thread.

    Fanboyism at it's most ridiculous.

That's not what I'm doing at all. Dunkirk is pure Nolan, and the succes is all his.

But I just wanna tell this little fact that since Luc pushed to make this law voted more en more foreign films are shot in France and it all started with the boxoffice-bomb Valerian. It's funny... I think.

Look at Avatar. Twice of TFA. Jesus Christ. That was truly a worldwide phenomenon.

Avatar did 100% better than TFA in France in dollars: but It only did 40% better in admissions (14.75mil vs 10.51mil), I think it shows well the decrease of the exchange rate.

The president of the CNC (French National Center of Cinema) thinks the tax credits helped it to be shot during more than 5 weeks.

Since the introduction of this tax credit, more than 35 foreign films have been shot in France, a number that has doubled compared to previous years.  It is quite possible that without this tax credits the film would have been shot Belgium and / or the Netherlands and a shorter shoot in France.

40m is sill low. I want more. Much more.

Well, it's impossible in France. I mean, Rogue One did $40m...

Basically the top in $ for space operas in French boxoffice is :

    1) Avatar : 176m$

    2) SW7 : 88m$

    3) The Fifth Element : ~~around 60m$

    SW3 : 57m$

    Rogue One : 40m$

    SW2 : 30.6m$

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 : 25m$

Guardians of the Galaxy : 20m$

    Prometheus : 16m$

    John Carter : 8.9m$

    Star Trek ID : 8m$

    Star Trek : 6.9m$

    Star Trek Beyond : 5.8m$

    Jupiter Ascending : 5.5m$

    Chronicles of Riddick : 5.2m$

With the current exchange rate that is very unfavorable, we could  not expect better!

Frontloaded. It seems legs will be like xmen films in North America. Someone tell me I am wrong.

It's absolutely normal in France. Previews started at 7PM so it's normal they are important.

The movie has a shot to do 5mil admissions in France. Maybe $40m. It's great.

The problem is definitely not the French boxoffice.

  13. Fun Fact:
Dunkirk has completely overshadowed Valerian in the theaters. But do you know that if Dunkerque could be realized as Nolan wished, in France, it is thanks to Luc Besson?  By passing a law to increase tax credits for movies shot in English in France, Besson helped foreign films like Dunkerque to be able to be shot in France. It's also this law that helped MI6 to be shot in France !

Doing less than Lucy and Fifth Element (1997) is not good. Will 3d help its boxoffice gross? DM3 has grossed approx 20M in France after 11.4M opening weekend, which is very bad. So Valerian could end up doing only 15M total in France. MAX 20M.

    That's a flop, right?

You are talking about things you know nothing about
The career of DM3 is far from over, it will end up around $30m maybe even $35m. That's exactly what Valerian seems to be able to do, maybe even more.
