  1. Disappointing number for Sex Tape. There is no reason why a movie with this cast and a raunchy premise shouldn't have broken out in a weak summer like this. Good expansion for Boyhood. $27-28,000 PTA from 33 theaters in its second weekend is impressive.
  2. Here is a good article by David Poland. ........ But on the film side, we are already noticing that no fad lasts forever. But the fad of the moment has a minimum $300m price tag with production and P&A. WB had 3 of those this summer (and it was a little quiet this year), a fourth coming, and Fox had one and maybe one more coming (a second sequel). Does Fox have any mega-budget films on the schedule next year? Fantastic Four? Probably on the cheaper side. Nothing else even suggests a huge budget. WB looks to have three… and three more in 2016 to Fox’s two (ID4-2 and Apes 3). Warner Bros ain’t Disney… but it’s a lot more financially aggressive than Fox. This is a terrible, terrible idea for the movie business. WB and CBS? Sure. Fox and Sony? Makes more sense. No question there are all kinds of economies that both businesses could take if Fox ate Time-Warner. But I fear that one of them with be a whole lot of investment in theatrically released feature films, independent network television production, and a cultural legacy that is unlikely to ever be rebuilt if destroyed. http://moviecitynews.com/2014/07/the-problem-with-fox-eating-time-warner/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
  3. If you are a movies fan then you don't want this. Fox and WB have a lot of redundancies so they will either be merged outright or they will co-ordinate to cut costs. Maybe one of the studios will get out of the production business altogether and will help distribute the movies that the other is producing. So let us say that the two studios combine to produce or distribute 30 movies every year, the number will be cut down to 20 or less. If they combine to release a dozen movies during the summer then the new merged studio will release no more than 6-7 "safest" movies that they can come up with.
  4. China > $200 million US $100 milllion PR2 probably makes $130 million + in China if it opens this year. Give it three more years and $200 million will probably happen.
  5. Paramount is quite obviously fudging numbers and they will probably keep doing it for the rest of TF4's run.
  6. That's a good expansion. It can make half a million to a million this weekend with an expansion like this.
  7. C+ isn't good for a comedy movie but it may not matter much if the people who watched Identity Thief and The Heat turn out in big numbers.
  8. She can do whatever the hell she wants. I was responding to the commenters claiming she is a victim who cannot get other (good) roles because of her size.
  9. Box office draw of actors usually drops when they are outside of their comfort zone. It is safe to say that RDJ's The Judge won't make as much money as some of his other recent more commercial hit movies but he made the movie anyway.
  10. Here is the deal. Melissa McCarthy has producing power in Hollywood. As far as I know Ben Falcone didn't even direct a short movie but he got to direct a comedy for Warners as his debut because he is Melissa McCarthy's husband. She can make better movies if she wants to but she doesn't because they won't make as much money. Chris Evans used the goodwill he earned from playing Captain America to direct a small independent drama . Jon Favreau's passion project was Chef. It is telling that McCarthy's passion project is the same character she plays over and over again. This is like Adam Sandler claiming Grown Up 2 was his passion project.
  11. There aren't that many fat leading men in Hollywood either. I am not saying that there aren't double standards because there are but Melissa McCarthy is NOT a victim. She has developed a schtick that works for her. period.
  12. Umm. She co-wrote the script with her husband who is directing the movie. She is also attached to a similar movie with similar character to be directed by her husband. She has her schtick and it is making her rich. There is nothing sad about it.
  13. It isn't a misstep. She is pretty much following in the footsteps of Adam Sandler.
  14. http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/movies/2014/06/28/harvey-weinstein-and-saga-snowpiercer/XOoYjxsOisSUhgut1dSfmJ/story.html
  15. So is Paramount going to under-report TF4 for the rest of the week to balance out $2 million they tacked on to the weekend total?
  16. Snowpiercer is a limited release because Harvey is an asshole. He had differences with the director so he dumped the movie.
  17. It is a prequel. One more good thing about Darabont is that he can keep the cost down. The Mist was made for less than $20 million so if they can make this sequel for around $125 million then I don't see why they can't make money off it. $170-180 million is usually not a good idea for most fantasy movies unless you can get Angelina Jolie to play one of the leads.
  18. 1. Se7en 2. Fight Club 3. The Social Network 4. Zodiac 5. Panic Room 6. The Game 7. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 8. Benjamin Button
  19. Should be the sequel to the original Predator but I don't think there will be a direct connection to any of these movies.
  20. The movie is a sequel. Steven Weintraub ‏@colliderfrosty 2m Exclusive: Shane Black Says His PREDATOR Film Is a Sequel, Not a Reboot http://tinyurl.com/q4banqe pic.twitter.com/aUxGKjYteB Rebooting a classic like the first movie makes no sense when you can easily make a good movie in the already-established universe.
  21. If they retell the story of the first movie then they will have to replace Arnold with someone else but regardless of what you think of him, Arnold isn't a replaceable actor. They can make a kickass Predator movie without rehashing the story of the first one. Robert Rodriguez's Predators isn't a very strong movie but it isn't bad either so it can be done.
