i haven’t seen it and it isn’t on Disney+. Damn you Chapek for not buying these out as well so I can watch this MILF for free!!!

If Dreamworks was still a part of Fox and Katzenberg would have chosen Fox over Universal. . . .Disney would own Shrek.

    DISNEY WOULD OWN SHREK

If Shrek 5 doesn't have Shrek dealing with a prima donna Snow Queen villain, I'm gonna riot.

I think it would have made a lot more sense if Turning Red and Lightyear had switched release strategies. Lightyear, as has been pointed out before, really seems like it would have been better-suited as a direct-to-streaming spinoff, while Turning Red could have been Pixar's triumphant return to original theatrical movies. It probably would have gotten a Chinese release (unlike Lightyear), and it wouldn't have had to worry about Jurassic World: Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick either!

They'd have probably released Turning Red around Thanksgiving, rather than Christmas and move Strange World to next March.

No, they'll go to bounce houses, trampoline parks, bowling, regular parks, laser tag, arcades, play gyms, I can keep going...

Kids have a LOT of options for kid-focused entertainment that is on par or cheaper than movies right now...and parents can tend to go for free and just watch (vs having to pay for their own ticket)...

Lol, if I was a kid and my mother told me we could either go . . . .any of those things you mentioned, I'd have chosen a theater to see a movie. Hell, that's why I so many movies in theaters as a kid, I'd forgo vacations just to see movies.

The thing is, Incredibles 1 imo is a pure joyride from start to finish. Theres not even 1 scene where i would even consider to skip a few minutes. Incredibles 2 ... after having seen it, you can skip like 40% of the movie and you woudnt miss those minutes.

Incredibles 2 does have some true highlights (i totally agree with the Raccoon scene beeing great), but theres so much unneccessary noise in that movie that it really feels slow. Plus, the villain is one of the worst in Pixar history, while Syndrome is an all-time best.

If Incredibles 1 woudnt exist, Incredibles 2 would be a lot higher in my book i think. But as the sequel to that first one ... it just doesnt come even close in quality in my opinion.

Incredibles 2 is nuts. It has the villain trying to outright murder Elastigirl with an axe.

    Yes, they are.

Just because you didn´t like them, it doesn´t mean everyone feel this way.

Soul / Luca / Red not only had great to excellent reviews, they´re all also gets insanely good reception from audiences as well.

Soul was an all time record breaker on streaming, and it stayed on charts for months. Luca was literally the most watched movie of 2021 considering all streaming platforms, Turning Red is another globally record breaking movie on D+, and both Luca and Red have an insane staying power on Nielsen charts and excellent social media engagement.

With the data we have, it´s fair to say audiences loved all the 3 original movies Pixar dropped in the past 16 months, so there´s no problem with audiences and Pixar, the problem is that everyone get used to see it on D+ for free, and now Lightyear is mega bomb probably because of some combo of factors. Everyone knows the movie will be on streaming for free in 30-45 days, it doesn´t look like it has a good enough hook overall for most people, there´s controversy surrounding it and the reception are low tier Pixar even if it´s still good.

I might just be getting too old, lol.

Pixar was, and in some way is a master at drawing in both adults and young audiences. Their films have something for everyone. However, Soul feels like it skews towards a much more adult/older audience while Luca skewed too young. I like Turning Red, I like it alot, I felt it got it right. But no doubt they're big hits in the streaming market.

And I don't think it's D+ that's the issue for Lightyear. Literally every goddamn advertisement and trailer screamed "ONLY IN THEATERS" sometimes twice. People just weren't that interested.

It will still make a killing on D+.

To counter the whole 'families don't want to watch movies in cinema anymore' narrative In the UK, Sonic 2, Sing 2 and The Bad Guys all did very solid numbers which proves that the theatrical window is still effective. I fully expect other family films like Minions 2 and Super-Pets will do well as well.

The Bad Guys was released for purchase and rental on digital services just over 17 days after release. It ain't that effective, one could argue had Universal not done that, Bad Guys would have made more. Bad Guys just got lucky that it was the only animated movie in the market.

I'm not sure it is Pixar that is entirely to blame for Lightyear flopping. I am sure a lot of this falls at Chapek's feet.

I don't think it's entirely that. Lightyear has been marketed and pushed heavily. You literally could not escape ads on Youtube, TV, etc.

It's likely gonna boil down to Disney already doing this back in the 2000s with Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and many of the now grown 90s kids and Toy Story fans wondering why the hell they're doing something so completly different.

Look, I’m not saying theaters are dead forever. I’m not saying kids aren’t interested in theaters. Im not saying any of this stuff.

I am simply stating how the GA feels, how the studio feels, separate from my thoughts, and how streaming will hurt Disney’s animated movies and their box office forever. Minions will do fine. Theaters will be fine. But even if Chapek is gone and Elemental or whatever was playing exclusively for months, it would still do poorly and worse than a few years ago because people will wait for Disney+. That’s not stuff I like or prefer, but I think will happen. It’s so frustrating words are being put into my mouth. Is nuance not allowed? Do I have to explain theaters are doing amazing and kids like movie theaters and everything will largely be fine every other sentence?

What would really help would be for Elemental to have a dynamite concept and a great teaser/trailer. But a movie about a sentient water drop and a walking ball of fire aren't that. . . .they might as well be scrapped characters and concepts from Inside Out.

Turning Red and Soul were the first Pixar movies in a long time to actually have good hooks. I thought Soul blew it, but I think Turning Red might have been a hit.

Personally I think Encanto would have done great had they not said it was coming to Disney+ before it even opened.
Not Frozen big because covid was still fairly prevalent, but it would have made a significant amount more.

Then the D+ mania would still have happened when it eventually went on there.

To be fair though, Encanto was barely marketed for theaters and unless someone was savvy enough or visited entertianment sites a lot, many didn't know it was heading to Disney+ on Christmas Day until they announced it about a week or two from Christmas.

Pixar's having problems after Coco, and it's not just because of Disney+. It's something behind the scenes. They just lack magic. Turning Red was fine, but Soul is actually kinda boring (and I was really looking forward to that because its concept is irresitable) and Luca, big hit on D+ it may be, was so low stakes that it was hard for me to get invested in anything going on. They're making solid films, but they're not making the big hitters they used to.

Outside of their sequels, the last original-concept Pixar movie I out and out loved and adored was Brave

Let's revisit this when Minions 2 opens in two weeks.

Straight to streaming isn't going to be a viable strategy long-term, it's just leaving money on the table that even a brief theatrical window provides.

Then the studios need to adapt.

At this point, theatrical has become a marketing tool for streaming and home disc. That's literally what Ecanto's release turned out to be. The movie wasn't make a huge splash at all, then Disney+ came and it's up there in popularity with Frozen. Lightyear will probably be a colossal hit on Disney+ when it debuts in 30-45 days or Disney+ Day.

  11. Goddamn.

If they shelve The Flash, which is a possibility, they could always go back to Batgirl and rework it so that it's a spin-off of the Burton/Keaton Batman films. It's gonna be big, that would make it bigger.

Also let James Wan do his own thing with Aquaman like what if feels like they did with Patty Jenkins and Wonder Woman 84 (a film that feels like it is completely separated from the DCEU save the first Wonder Woman film and more in line with the Lynda Carter series)

I may be biased but as a stem major that's in Paleozoology, the conceptual megafauna in this fictional biodiverse world looks incredible.

Yeah, but a lot looks like leftover ideas from that Discovery Channel The Future is Wild special.

I do sincerely hope I'm wrong. But this looks like a major downgrade from Encanto.

  13. It really doesn't help Disney's animated front that Strange World looks really, really lame and is basically kinda Lightyear 2.0 - space explorers stranded on a strange world likely looking for a way out. For a movie with that title, you'd expect the aliens to be wild, inventive and strange . . .and they just look like plush child bath toys, which might be the point. They need their Froz3n or Big Hero 7.
