  1. The direction is amazing but the script and most of the acting is just fucking awful.

None of the human element works at all.

-Chandler's performance is a campy disaster & his character absurd

-Farmiga is actually great in a horribly written character that is absurd and all over the place, lots of unintended laughter at her character

    -The normally great Watanabe is...

That said, the story "eco terrorists" unleashing the worlds monsters and all of the mnster-verse stuff with monarch is awesome and very creative, lots of imagination on display here.

Sadly, also lots of missed potential just as the last film. I highly doubt moviegoers will be excited for a 3rd - if they're even excited for the 2nd which seems highly debatable ay this point.

Godzilla v Kong had $350m+ potential but not any more.

  2. Marketing was insane, blew up the first weekend of May that Mummy movies had previously really begun to exploit. Knew this wold be huge but back then, $74m was huge.

I still remember checking IMDB Monday morning and seeing the $114m estimate and going "WHAT DA FUH"

  3. Perfect storm of factors here.

-Finale Factor is huge - all casual fans of the previous films tune in for the conclusions; we saw the final film openings increase signifgantly over proviso films with Potter, Rings, Star Wars, etc - this cannot be discounted.

-Very well received and highly seen preceding film that ended with a cliffhanger ending -> biggest piece of marketing

-Opened in a D.E.A.D. market- no competition, record theater and showtime counts; theaters prepared to accommodate crazy volumes

-Maximum potential for previews - Potter 8 previews inflate to $52m from only midnight sneaks, TFA adjusts to $60m in current preview scale

-Enormous amount of presales, make it much easier to get tickets and reserve seats; also decreases the lines for walk-up business

Any serious challenger to the record will have to check all these boxes. Difficult to foresee one anytime soon but thats what makes following the box office so interesting.

  4. This film took trends displayed by other big films and increased on them significantly.

@Shawn mentioned films that surpassed all expectations ala Jurassic world, Spider-man, The dark Knight - movies where opening grosses could have significantly higher had theaters been more prepared as they were with TFA or ENDGAME. In terms of films just destroying all existing precedents, I see 4 films in the last 30 years that did this: Batman 1989 (45% above previous record which just happened to be 1 week old) , Independence day 1996, Spider-man 2001, and now End Game.

For as huge as End Game is, the trends were there, they have just never been realized to this extent for variety of reasons.

Just astonishing. It broke record by $100 million for now. This record will never be broken. They will never be another movie that will gross this much in a 3 day weekend.

No inflation, no ticket prices will surpass this. If my calculations are correct, this is like Spider Man grossing $250 million in 2001 to come to this amount of money. First movie to break $100+ million in three day weekend.

It will happen, only 7 years ago this time, $200m seemed far out of reach. Wont happen any time soon though.
