Presales for sunday morning/afternoon are the highest I have ever seen: in 11 Tokio cinemas 20/29 shows are soldout or near, 6/29 are 50/80% and only 3/29 are up to 50%. (all in Minami Osawa, always the weakest in presales, but higher than usually)

For example in North America in the week of Frozen DVD/BR release home video market generate a gross of 241M$ and Frozen had 70% of market share, so it grossed about 170M$, non counting digital download, VOD and rentals , so we have an estimate total over 200M$ only in first week and only in North America! In the same week (18th in release) new Sudio Ghibli movie Memories of Marnie and Pokemon opens, probably not a coincidence.

Oz opened in a 4-days €2.893.385 (near 8M€ at the end). Maleficent has a 5-days opening (wed-sun) followed by a holiday monday. In this 6-days frame it will could pass 5M€. Other comparison: Frozen opened at 2,3M€ but had a 2nd full week of 8,1M€ and closed near 20M€; Burton's Alice opened with a stratospheric 8,1M€ and closed near 30M€ (6th biggest movie ever in Italy)

In $ it's sure, in euros i don't know, it needs at least 6M€ in 6-days opening (Disney marketing campaign is very strong here and often is associated with the magical word "Frozen"). Other, we should see the power of word of mouth (in positive) and competition (in negative).

Maleficent had a good chanche for a big opening in a very interesting 6-days frame (monday 2 june is holiday) even if edge of tomorrow opens today and godzilla is still strong. It could save a weak 2013/2014 season for non animated hollywood blockbusters.
