    08 (07) ¥64,932,900 ($595,000), -41%, ¥385,562,200 ($3.5 million), Nomitori Samurai (Toho) WK2
    09 (---) ¥60,000,000 ($550,000), 0, ¥60,000,000 ($550,000), Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Ch. III (Showgate) NEW
    10 (07) ¥57,459,000 ($527,000), -33%, ¥1,194,470,000 ($10.8 million), Laplace's Witch (Toho) WK4

    >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer claims its sixth-non-consecutive weekend atop the box-office in revenue, and its seventh-consecutive weekend at #1 in admissions. It surpassed Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the weekend to become the highest-grossing film of 2018. Besides not setting an opening day record for the franchise (due to being the first to open on a Friday), the twenty-second film in the series has broken literally every other record in the franchise, right down to every single daily since day 2.

    >Peter Rabbit held quite well, and has set itself up for a likely total above the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone.

    >What a Wonderful Family! 3 settles for a third place start, debuting in third place to 112,000 admissions across 336 screens (and 153,000 since opening on Friday). This is 4% below its predecessor.

    >After the Rain comes in fourth place, selling 85,876 admissions over the weekend frame on 301 screens (and 116,266 since opening on Friday). Obviously nothing exciting, but any opening above ¥100 million this time of year is usually seen as "solid".

    >Avengers: Infinity War is holding on decently, and will surpass The Avengers next weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

    >My Friend "A" hasn't had its actual for the weekend frame released yet, but it ranked 5th in admissions over the weekend. And since its 3-day total has been released, I'm projecting it'll come in 6th place in revenue for the weekend. I'll update when its weekend figure is released.

    >Rampage basically bombed last weekend, and its second weekend drop is pretty alarming. It's barely going to finish above ¥500 million (probably shy of $5 million).

    >Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Ch. III debuted in 9th place over the weekend in admissions, but its weekend gross hasn't been released yet -- not surprising given its a limited release from Showgate. I'll update when (or if) its number is released.

Not much happening this weekend, although it's looking likely that Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will, once again, reign atop the box-office. If it does, this will be its sixth-weekend at #1 in revenue, and seventh-consecutive weekend at #1 in admissions. And whether it achieves another weekend on top or not isn't going to keep it from surpassing Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the weekend to become the highest-grossing film of the year.

What a Wonderful Family! 3, the third film in the series from renowned director, Yoji Yamada, should debut with a similar opening as its predecessors, which will be enough for second or third place.

Avengers: Infinity War will likely be within ¥100 million of outgrossing The Avengers to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market after Sunday.

    >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer achieved yet another weekend at #1, its fifth overall (sixth in admissions), selling a further 161,000 admissions. The twenty-second film in the long-running series has become the highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise. It has now exceed 5.5 million admissions after six-weeks in release, and is aiming for a total near ¥8 billion ($75 million) and 6 million+ admissions. Also, this marks the sixth-consecutive year that Detective Conan has broken its franchise record -- an incredibly impressive achievement.

    >Peter Rabbit ended up settling for a second place start, but honestly, the opening is pretty solid considering films like this tend to disappoint, and Sony has been experiencing a rough streak over the past few years. The film sold 144,965 admissions over the weekend across 463 screens, and 178,465 admissions since opening on Friday. It's not guaranteed, but it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

    >Rampage disappointed, nearly bombing, as expected, selling 95,947 admissions over the weekend frame across 654 screens, and 123,580 admissions since opening on Friday.

    >Avengers: Infinity War held well enough, and only has The Avengers left to surpass to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in the market, which it should be able to do.

    >Notormi Samurai rounded out the Top 5 in its debut, and managed to sell a decent 101,212 admissions over the weekend on 327 screens. Overall, this is certainly a mediocre start given Hiroshi Abe is usually a more reliable draw, but it outperformed what pre-sales were suggesting so maybe it can achieve good legs.

    >Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle misses the Top 5 and opens below the first film, but no weekend figures have been released for it yet. When the numbers are released, I'll update this post.

The #1 spot is very contested between Peter Rabbit, attempting to debut on top, and Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, looking to win a fifth weekend on top in its sixth week of release. In terms of admissions, they may only be a couple thousand apart, or less, so it's going to come down to which film has the higher average ticket price.

For now, I'm leaning toward Detective Conan defending its hold atop the box-office once again since I'm doubting Peter Rabbit was able to skew old enough to drive its avg. ticket price up enough to take it... Sony also has it $100,000 lower than I do, so that's not a positive sign either.

Rampage disappointed, nearly bombing, as expected based on its pre-sales.

Avengers: Infinity War held well enough, and only has The Avengers left to surpass to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in the market, which it should be able to do.

Notormi Samurai performed quite a bit better than its pre-sales suggested, and should have comfortably cleared ¥100 million to earn a Top 5 debut (and probably fourth in admissions).

For the next six weeks, the box-office is going to littered with a lot of dumps, this weekend included. As I've mentioned before, May and June are dead months at the box-office since they're sandwiched between Golden Week and Summer Vacation/Obon Festival, so studios typically don't release anything interesting for the six weeks or so in-between.

    >Peter Rabbit is going to be a surprise #1 debut, in my opinion. It's obviously benefiting from the lack of competition, but this type of release typically doesn't perform very well, and coming from Sony (which has been struggling) makes it even more impressive.

    >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will likely have to relinquish its hold atop the box-office, but it became the highest-grossing film in the Detective Conan franchise this past Thursday, and will exceed the ¥7 billion milestone over the weekend. The twenty-second entry in the series is locked now to surpass Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become the highest-grossing film of 2018, so far.

    >Rampage is going to be a major disappointment, borderline bomb, for Warner Bros. in the market. It performed very poorly yesterday, and its pre-sales are mediocre at best. It'll probably achieve a third place debut, but its opening is going to be low. It's very likely to miss the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

    >Avengers: Infinity War will surpass in one fell swoop, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Avengers: Age of Ultron to become the fifth-highest grossing Marvel/DC film in the market over the weekend. It continues to be on track to eventually surpass The Avengers to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in Japan.

    >Nomitori Samurai also appears to be a big disappointment, despite starring the often reliable Hiroshi Abe in the leading role. Since Toho didn't release it a few weeks earlier in time for Golden Week, though, it seems they knew this one wasn't going to perform very well. It'll be a struggle for it to make the Top 5.

    >Kamen Rider Amazons: The Final Judgement debuting all the way down in tenth place should look shocking since Kamen Rider films are usually good for a Top 3 debut at least, but this is a special release. This film is the conclusion of the Amazon Prime.jp Kamen Rider Amazons series, and is only playing on 88 screens.

Rough weekend for the holdovers following the Golden Week holiday period, but not unexpected given this weekend typically experiences harsh declines.

    >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer continues to reign atop the box-office in its fifth-weekend of release, and has exceeded 5.1 million admissions to become the most-attended film of the year. The twenty-second film in the long-running series is only ¥130 million away from surpassing last year's film to become the highest-grossing film in the series, which it'll do possibly this Friday or certainly in its sixth-weekend. The film is very likely to exceed the ¥7.5 billion ($70 million) milestone to surpass Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become the highest-grossing film of 2018, so far.

    >Avengers: Infinity War falls hard as expected in its third weekend, but it has already exceeded the ¥3 billion mark, making it the fastest non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film to ever reach the milestone. It will continue to fall hard from here on, so I'm doubting it'll have the staying power to reach ¥4 billion, but it'll likely outgross The Avengers' ¥3.61 billion to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC release in the market.

    >The Blood of Wolves, starring Koji Yakusho, debuts in third place with a decent start, selling 112,684 admissions across 337 screens over the weekend. The opening isn't anything noteworthy or anything, but it's solid enough in the post-Golden Week slot.

    >Then Youth, But Youth surprised over the weekend and sold enough admissions to come in fifth place, but no figures have been release for the film yet. Its weekend number is just a placeholder for now, and I do have it in sixth because Ready Player One likely came in fifth in revenue. Nikkatsu is a small distributor, and it sometimes takes a couple extra days for any numbers to be released from them.

    >Coco also experienced the big post-Golden Week drop, and its chances of reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion appears in jeopardy, I believe it'll still reach it even if it takes another month, or two. There's very little for families/children to see until July, so it should perform well enough to crawl to the milestone.

And so begins some of the slowest days and weekends of the year. Once Golden Week is over, the remaining weeks of May and all of June is largely a wasteland that studios release films they have little, or at least, questionable confidence in. June is regularly one of the three weakest months each year, so enjoy the rest of May while you can.

The post-Golden Week weekend typically experiences harsh drops for the holdovers, and it won't be any different this year -- look for all of them to drop close to, or over, 50% following the very beneficial holiday period, with films targeting family/children declining the most this year due to Children's Day falling on the weekend last week.

Why is japan more important than South Korea, France more important than Mexico, Germany more important than Brazil e.t.c. What kind of cherry picking is that ? It stinks and it’s basically vomit-inducing.  Every movie is judged according to the time of its release not with , this country this, that country that, adjusted, unadjusted, the dollar value at the time blahblahblah. Fact of the matter is this is crushing every hp movie for example, why should I value u.k money for hp more tha india’s money for IW ? Fantastic beasts movies are being released in the same conditions and failing to set the world on fire, the hobbit movies also failed if we consider these franchises extremely similar to Hp and Lotr.

Maybe you should create a chart excluding the countries you deem as unworthy of being in it , and this shit about emerging markets needs to stop. Emerging markets are there for every movie to take advantage of and have been for quite a few years actually.

Yes nothing is like the two cameron films but that’s  where this ends. E.t, Star Wars, Lotr, hp, Jurassic park e.t.c can all be easily compared with fast and furious films, marvel films e.t.c., for example .

First, please drop the feigned indignation. Second, where did I say they were more important ? You just can't use non-mature markets for long-time based comparisons, it's basic economic analysis. Japan has been a fairly stable market with no inflation for decades where as South-Korea has experienced massive growth in the past 15 years or so. In South-Korea's top 30 films by admissions, every single film has come out within the last 15 years. Every single one. Same reason why France or Germany make for better markets to use if you want to compare current movies to movies from 20 years ago than Mexico or Brazil.

It depends on which markets. You can compare all these movies in mature markets such as the ones I mentioned above, but comparing them in markets that are still growing makes absolutely no sense. And thus it doesn't make much more sense to compare overall OS totals either. So AIW released in 2018 will gross more in China than Return of the King ? No kidding ! By the way, when a market is growing as fast as China is, a few years is a lot.

Looking at the examples, it looks like there is a global phenomenon approximately once per decade. I'm guessing the next one is also likely to be an original film since big franchise films do not have universal appeal in all markets (e.g. Star Wars is weak in Latin America and Asia outside Japan, MCU is very weak in Japan and not that big in much of Europe).

Once or twice per decade, yeah, although I think that with so many new markets emerging it might actually be even harder for a movie to become a true global phenomenon since it will require appealing massively to many more different cultures, where as twenty plus years ago it was basically North America, Europe and Japan.

The question is how can we measure a worldwide phenomenon. Is it necessary to be a record breaker (a grade of 10 out 10) in 3 or 4 markets and be average in the rest or is it enough with being a very good grosser (an 8 out 10) in 30 or 40 markets like IW? The big merit of this film is, IMO, and beyond being enormous in traditional good markets for SH genre, to boost it in other markets not so favorable to it, like Europe, where it is making very big numbers and narrowing the gap with other franchises much more accepted.

Maybe adjusting by every factor it is still far from Titanic, and a bit behind Jurassic Park, E.T, Avatar, the first Star Wars, Harry Potter or LOTR. But all things considered I do not think the difference with them is too big.

True phenomenons are basically movies that overperform above market expectations at the time of their release in every market, or almost every market. Titanic and Avatar are of course the best examples of the last 20 years. I would also add E.T to that list. I would say it's far from all three of these, and looking at traditional stable markets is a good way to measure that :

Japan : Titanic (26.20 billion yen), Avatar (15.60 billion yen), E.T (13.50 billion yen), AIW (4 billion yen)

France : Titanic (21 million admissions), Avatar (nearly 15 million admissions), E.T (9.5 admissions), AIW (5-5.5 million admissions)

    etc.

While there are movies like LOTR or HP where AIW is most likely bigger domestically, overseas, and accounting for market conditions, it's behind all the franchises you mentioned.

This is the first weekend since 2013 that Children's Day (May 5th) has fallen on the weekend, so look for some major increases for films skewing toward family/children. Overall, this is a tricky weekend to predict since Saturday is a holiday (and one targeting a specific demo) while Sunday is not, so it could fluctuate a bit from the forecast.

    >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer is going to climb back to the #1 spot in its fourth weekend (it actually held off Avengers in admissions last week), and once again set a new franchise record total after four weeks in release. It'll begin to fall hard after Sunday, but it's going to easily exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million), and could reach ¥8 billion ($75 million).

    >Avengers: Infinity War is going to slip to second place in its second weekend (and remain there in admissions), and will easily score the biggest two-week total among all MCU films, and among all Marvel/DC films, aside from the original Spider-Man trilogy. It's on course for a total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million+).

    >Laplace's Witch delivered a strong first day yesterday, and while today's pre-sales are good, it's pretty clear they'll be a little frontloaded here over the weekend since it debuted on a holiday. It could potentially reach ¥300 million over the weekend frame, but I'm going to a little safe.

    >The tenth spot could be any of many different films, but it seems like it'll be The Boss Baby. It is way up versus last Saturday due to Children's Day, but it doesn't have the necessary seats to experience the level of increase that pre-sales suggests. I'm predicting that this particular film has an abnormally higher number of pre-sales due to the holiday, and that its actual weekend increase will be more "reasonable".

It seems a joke to complain about China market size in 2010 when Avatar was absurdly bloated because of 3D overcharge and the best exchange rates ever.

China was smaller in 2010? Sure. And what about in 2001? when two beasts like HP1 and FOTR were released, with the worse exchange rates maybe in last 30 years, and without the 3D doping, without developing markets, and without $200m from China... We can get tons of examples like these. With unadjusted dollars people lose the perspective.

Avatar will still remain to be the biggest grosser ever for maybe some years and it will always remembered as a phenomenon (still far from Titanic, though). No doubt about that. But it is undeniable it was one of the most benefited films ever by economical situation.

IW will not beat Avatar (who knows if Avengers 4 can have a chance). And we still do not know if it will be able to beat Titanic (it depends on China), but it is already one of the biggest successes ever. No matters how you look at it.

Actually, not really. In the US, it will at best make the top 30 adjusted. In France it will do at most 5M admissions, not even top 100 all time. Same thing in markets like Germany, Italy or Japan where it's really not looking at a record breaking performance at all. In the UK, based on average ticket price, it's looking at maybe 8-9 million admissions, where TFA did 17M, Spectre 13M, Skyfall 16M, etc.

It's a huge success overall because it has managed to build on all the emerging markets while managing to keep a decent level of support in traditional markets, but we're far from "one of the biggest successes ever". People indeed lose the perspective with unadjusted dollars, combined nowadays with many growing markets overseas..

Remember Avatar was the highest grossing film from 2009-2013 despite the rapidily growing market. It was the highest grossing film by far so it would be fair to assume it would have made so much more than 200 (800m?) if china's market was the size it is now

China's market in 2017 was a bit below ten times the size it was in 2009, so going only with market growth it would actually be $2b in China alone.
