    Sunday (05/06)

Great Friday (note: cumulative totals were updated for the Friday estimates to reflect last weekend's actuals).

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer is doing huge numbers and will easily break the ¥6 billion milestone over the weekend (probably sometime tomorrow). It's going to be a tough act to follow for the upcoming Summer releases.

Laplace's Witch performed very well (may have edge out a second place start in admissions), but let's see how it holds up as its opening day couldn't have been at a better time.

Avengers: Infinity War unfortunately dropped from its opening day, but a sub-20% decline is pretty solid given the genre, although there aren't many films to compare this example (Marvel/DC film having a holiday on its second Friday) with to get an accurate indicator of things to come. Either way, its 8-day total is higher than every Marvel/DC film, aside from the original Spider-Man trilogy of films. It's very likely going to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man film among all Marvel/DC releases.

I'll have the Weekend Forecast posted later this evening.

    Yeah,

but Strong local for France and Japan yes, but not so much for Germany (local movie market share normally around 20%)

What I also forgot, France and Germany count admissions not money, so that makes it harder.

In $ it at least is the Top Opening Weekend in Germany (in admissions it is Spider-Man with 1.4M compared to IW with 1M)

    That is impressive.

Japan also counts admissions, which means it might be one of the only markets, if not the only market, where the films doesn't debut at #1.

Since AIW opened on Friday it has already burned some demand whereas Ultrons 1st day was a saturday which was its OD, Holiday and numbers are high.

While that's true Friday is one of the lowest weekdays in Japan so it usually doesn't burn that much demand. A few weeks ago a local franchise released annually broke its 2 day OW despite opening on a Friday for the first time in over 20 years.

And it makes even less sense to compare F-S to S-S and say it opened higher.

The question is in which regard 'underperformed'?

Relatively to expectations, I think it overperformed everywhere.

Relatively to Superhero movies, it overperformed everywhere (apart from Japan and Germany and France to a certain degree as it isn't the highest Superhero opening in these three)

Relatively to other Gigantic-Blockbusters (Basically again Japan, Germany and France:lol: and probably to a certain Degree other parts of Europe, though I am not sure about that)

Basically traditional non-English speaking markets with a strong local production.

    >Avengers: Infinity War delivers a great opening weekend based on estimates, the second biggest for a non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film but it will come in below Avengers: Age of Ultron (by about 11%). However, it's worth noting that Infinity War opened on Friday as opposed to Ultron's Saturday start, which given the genre, probably made up most of the difference. This is a great start, though, and given the release being right at the start of Golden Week, legs are sure to be solid, so outgrossing Ultron is pretty likely. Expect a total around ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) or a little more.

    >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer held very well in its third weekend, and while it slipped to second place in revenue, it might still reign atop the box-office in admissions. I'm only getting a 5,000 or so difference between it and Infinity War (both being around 450,000). The twenty-second film in the long-running franchise is still doing record numbers for the franchise, and is well on track for a total around ¥7.5 billion ($70 million).

I'm a bit busy this afternoon, so I'll include analysis for a few other films in the Top 10 when Actuals are released. And speaking of which, Actuals will likely be delayed a day or two due to Golden Week, so expect them on Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Also, with the start of Golden Week, get ready for some massive weekdays.

Avengers: Infinity War got off to a great start yesterday, and its Saturday pre-sales suggest that it's in store for a great debut weekend as well. Its pre-sales are 93% ahead of Doctor Strange and 60% ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the MCU's two biggest openers in the past two years. All the other MCU (and DC) films debuted too low to really compare this against, really, and unfortunately, Avengers: Age of Ultron opened on July 1st (a national discount day) which greatly boosted its ticket sales for the day, so it's not a fair comparison either!

Anyway, the numbers so far suggest an opening weekend around ¥750 million, however, Sunday is the start of Golden Week (Showa Day), so Monday is a holiday (observance), too, as a result, so I could see it reaching ¥800 million over the weekend. It'll be aiming to achieve the biggest opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film after the original Spider-Man trilogy.

Note: To anyone who follows the Japan Box-Office closely, largely disregard the Saturday results -- the day itself isn't going to reflect the weekend business whatsoever due to Showa Day landing on Sunday this year. Sunday, as a result, is going to be abnormally boosted, so Saturday will be a little deflated. It's also possible, if Sunday is strong enough, that the holdovers will hold slightly better than forecast.

  12. Corpse (for IW fans) :

After checking showtimes at various locations this weekend, Avengers: Infinity War and Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (despite being in its third week) appear to have similar showings/seating allocation over the weekend. Avengers has the advantage on Friday by occupying the biggest screens (the 500-700+ auditoriums) at the majority of locations, but Detective Conan is taking most of them back on Saturday and Sunday.
