The twenty-second film in the long-running franchise is now tracking 17% ahead of last year's film, which puts it on course to reach the ¥8 billion ($75 million) milestone on 6 million+ admissions. It's very likely now to outgross Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and is setting the bar very high for the Summer tentpoles to compete against. >Ready Player One debuted in a distant second place, but its debut is pretty good due to an absurd avg. ticket price of ¥1710 ($15.90) from strong 3D/IMAX shares, selling 214,973 admissions over the weekend frame across 745 screens, and 282,618 admissions since opening on Friday. This opening isn't the home-run start for Spielberg's latest, but with the Golden Week holidays coming up soon, it has a good chance of reaching the ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) mark, which is respectable. >Coco remains steady in fourth place, and while the 46% decline is higher than expected given its prior weekend holds, it's still a bit better than other Spring animated releases from Disney/Pixar and Illumination which tend to drop 50% or more on this weekend each year. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone have become a bit more slim as a result of this hold, but it's still doable if it can benefit enough from Golden Week. >Inuyakashi rounds out the Top 5 with a mediocre debut, selling just 90,101 admissions over the weekend across 313 screens, and 119,809 admissions since opening on Friday. >Pacific Rim: Uprising experienced one of the worst second weekend holds I can remember for a major wide release (300+ theaters), and I'm willing to bet it's possibly in the Top 10 on that list. This disastrous hold even puts its ¥1 billion ($10 million) chances in jeopardy, meaning its multiplier might not reach even 3.5... truly a pathetic result following its decent debut (which was higher than the original!). >The Greatest Showman holds strong in its tenth weekend of release, and I believe it'll be able to crawl over the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone before its incredible run comes to an end.
  3. Corpse : (C)2018 青山剛昌/名探偵コナン製作委員会 Weekend Estimates (04/21-22) 01 (01) ¥778,000,000 ($7.2 million), -40%, ¥3,000,000,000 ($27.8 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK2 02 (---) ¥350,000,000 ($3.3 million), 0, ¥450,000,000 ($4.2 million), Ready Player One (Warner Bros.) NEW 03 (02) ¥198,000,000 ($1.8 million), -46%, ¥650,000,000 ($6.1 million), Crayon Shin-chan: Kung-Fu Boys Ramen Rebellion (Toho) WK2 04 (04) ¥131,000,000 ($1.2 million), -47%, ¥4,175,000,000 ($39.2 million), Coco (Disney) WK6 05 (---) ¥110,000,000 ($1.0 million), 0, ¥140,000,000 ($1.3 million), Inuyashiki (Toho) NEW 06 (03) ¥103,000,000 ($960,000), -63%, ¥650,000,000 ($6.1 million), Pacific Rim: Uprising (Toho-Towa) WK2 07 (06) ¥87,000,000 ($810,000), -48%, ¥3,025,000,000 ($28.3 million), The Boss Baby (Toho-Towa) WK5 08 (05) ¥80,000,000 ($745,000), -53%, ¥950,000,000 ($8.9 million), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Sony) WK3 09 (08) ¥56,000,000 ($520,000), -34%, ¥4,700,000,000 ($44.1 million), The Greatest Showman (Fox) WK10 10 (07) ¥46,000,000 ($425,000), -58%, ¥5,100,000,000 ($47.6 million), Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island (Toho) WK8 Yikes at most of the drops this weekend. The weekend before Golden Week begins (April 29th) can often see steep declines, and while these are pretty similar to the past few years, I just thought they'd be a little better since GW is a day later than last year. Golden Week is one of the three strongest weeks of the year at the box-office, so the days leading up to it are typically weaker than normal. >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, however, held just fine, and if estimates hold, actually held better than most of its predecessors in its second weekend (including the last two films). It'll achieve the biggest second weekend in the Detective Conan franchise, and should earn itself the eighth biggest second weekend for an animated film if it holds. Expect a total between ¥7-7.5 billion ($65-70 million) with 5.5 million+ admissions. >Ready Player One came in a little better than my forecast, and delivered a very respectable second place debut. As long as it's not unusually frontloaded, it should be on target to finish around ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) with the benefit of Golden Week coming up soon. >Coco was holding better than many past Spring Disney/Pixar/Illumination releases, but it fell inline with most of them in its sixth weekend of release -- although a sub-50% drop is better than films like Moana or Sing. This drop does, however, make reaching the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone fairly difficult, so it needs a very healthy Golden Week if it wants to achieve that goal. >Pacific Rim: Uprising may have made some history this weekend, and not the kind it wants to be known for. It's very likely to have dropped over 60% in its second weekend, which is already one of the biggest second weekend drops I can recall for a major wide release, but if it comes in closer to 65%... I'm willing to bet it's a Top 5 all-time worst second weekend decline. I'll do some research into this over the next few days. >The Greatest Showman is pretty much in the same situation as Coco regarding its chance of reaching the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone. Its drop this weekend is "fine", but it'll be entering its eleventh weekend and will fall out of the Top 10 next week, so it could end up suffering severe screen/showtime cuts... We'll see, it'll be close.
  4. Corpse : (C)2018 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Weekend Forecast (04/21-22) 01 (01) ¥764,000,000 ($7.1 million), -41%, ¥3,000,000,000 ($27.8 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK2 02 (---) ¥325,000,000 ($3.0 million), 0, ¥425,000,000 ($4.0 million), Ready Player One (Warner Bros.) Its cumulative total will be right around the ¥3 billion milestone after its second weekend, which puts it on track to exceed the ¥7 billion ($65 million) milestone. >Ready Player One isn't going to breakout, but as long as it comes in above ¥300 million over the weekend frame, it'll probably be good enough to maintain solid theater presence through the upcoming Golden Week holiday period (beginning April 29th) to reach a respectable ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) total. >Coco will remain in the Top 5 in its sixth weekend of release, and after Sunday, will have outgrossed a number of previous Pixar films, such as Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Inside Out. It'll probably continue to play well over the next few weeks, and the Golden Week holiday period just might benefit it enough to reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. >The Greatest Showman will celebrate its tenth-weekend in the Top 10, and while it won't be able to climb an higher than fourth on the all-time highest-grossing live-action musical chart, its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone is looking pretty good.

(Toei) WK5 >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, the twenty-second film in the long-running franchise, obliterates the competition and delivers one of the biggest (fifth) opening weekend in the past ten years. Its number fell slightly versus estimates, but it still set a franchise opening record and is only the fourth domestic film to ever debut with over 1 million admissions, and only the third overall film to do so since 2007, selling an incredible 1,012,000 admissions across 384 screens. And since opening early on Friday, its 3-day total admissions reached 1,289,000. The Detective Conan films have some frontloading to them, but only achieving the standard multiplier in the series will allow it to exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million+) on close to 5.5 million admissions. If it can manage just slightly better legs than some of its predecessors, it might be able to outgross Star Wars: The Last Jedi to take the yearly crown (so far). >Crayon Shin-chan: Kung-Fu Boys Ramen Rebellion delivered a good second place debut, selling 314,648 admissions over the weekend frame on 354 screens. And since opening early on Friday, it has sold 334,196 admissions. Its debut is 12% higher than last year's film, and it'll be aiming for a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million). >Coco holds extraordinarily well in its fifth weekend against a ton of new competition, much, much better than last year's Moana and Sing, both of which fell 40% against Detective Conan and Crayon Shin-chan on this weekend last year. It appears increasingly likely that Pixar/Disney's latest hit may very well reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone. >Pacific Rim: Uprising debuts in fourth place on 192,791 admissions on 581 screens, and while that may seem disappointing (and it kinda is), it's better than its predecessor opening in fifth place, and its opening weekend is actually 19% higher than it, too. It'll finish around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), similar to the original film. >Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to seventh place, but like last year's film, managed to mostly survive this weekend when most of its predecessors collapse in week seven. Also, the thirty-eighth film in the long-running franchise exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, becoming the first film in the series to reach this mark -- remarkable. >The Greatest Showman continues along its incredible path of success, and has surpassed La La Land to become the third highest-grossing live-action musical in the market. It'll be a bit difficult, but it, too, may also reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone if it holds onto enough screens in the coming few weeks.

  7. Corpse : I'm estimating that Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, the twenty-second film in the franchise, opened between ¥1.30-1.35 billion ($12.1-12.6 million) on 1,025,000-1,075,000 admissions over the weekend frame. And since opening on Friday, I'm estimating a 3-day total of ¥1.65-1.70 billion ($15.3-$15.8 million) on 1,300,000-1,350,000 admissions. As long as it exceeds ¥1.3 billion and 1 million admissions over the weekend frame, here are some key accomplishments: >4th Domestic Film to Ever Debut With Over 1 Million Admissions. >4th Biggest Opening Weekend for Any Animated Film. >3rd Biggest Opening Weekend for Any Film Since 2007. >New April Opening Weekend Record. >New Franchise Opening Weekend Record. 9. So Conan 22 is looking at a record Sunday and Coco is looking at a single-digit Sunday drop, easily the best among the three. As of 9 pm : Coco -8.9% Boss Baby -19.3% Doraemon -33.8%
  10. Would have been really interesting to see how it would have done if it opened on Saturday instead. Oh well.
  11. Sure, but even accounting for that still makes for a great drop in revenue.
  12. Coco is doing amazing too. Only a 14% drop for the day as of 7 pm.
  13. Looking back, last year's movie's OW average price was around 1,300 yen.
  14. And yesterday Corpse mentioned that Saturday was looking at least "4 times greater", evenings aside I would guess.
  15. The drops are really really ugly today for animated movies. At the moment we're at around 65-70% for Coco, 88% for Boss Baby and 95% for Doraemon. Looks like Coco is holding the best among the bunch. I don't think weekend holds will be as bad...but I guess we'll see. Per Corpse, "pretty much all the holdovers suffered 50%+ drops in seating/showtimes".
  16. There can be several big films at the same time in Japan. Think of Yôkai Watch and Star Wars both opening with over 1 billion yen on the same weekend.

Its hold is quite impressive considering drops can often times be a little harsh the first weekend of April after the Spring Break holiday period. Disney/Pixar's latest sold 223,866 admissions in its fourth weekend, and has exceeded 2.8 million after four weeks in release. The film is tracking well ahead of its studio predecessors, such as Wall-E and Inside Out, that it shared a similar opening weekend with at this point, and is on track to finish between ¥4.5-5 billion. >Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle debuts in second place, though it did have to settle for this place in terms of admissions, selling 180,315 admissions over the weekend frame across 627 screens -- it has sold 260,053 admissions since opening on Friday and after some limited Spring Break showings last week were included. Overall, while not debuting at #1 might appear disappointing, the opening is solid, especially given how poorly/dreadful Western comedies perform in the market. If it can hold onto enough seats/showtimes over the next few weeks, expect a total around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million). >The Boss Baby slips to third place, though by selling a further 191,922 admissions in its third weekend, managed to hang onto second place in terms of admissions. The breakout hit has officially outgrossed Shrek 2 now to become DreamWorks Animation's highest-grossing film in Japan. Its post-Spring Break drop is comparable to last year's Sing, so it should have a bit more life in it to definitely exceed the ¥3 billion milestone, and finish around ¥3.2/3.3 billion ($30/31 million) or so. >Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to fourth place in its sixth weekend of release, selling an additional 157,000 admissions. Not only did the thirty-eighth entry in the long-running franchise become the highest-grossing film in the series last Tuesday, its 32nd day of release, but it also became the most-attended film in the series on Sunday by exceeding 4.2 million admissions. It's going to exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone next weekend, and should finish a little shy of the ¥5.5 billion ($51/52 million) mark -- incredibly impressive results. >The Greatest Showman remains in the Top 5 in its eighth weekend of release, delivering an excellent hold that's once again better than last year's La La Land. The musical smash surpassed The Phantom of the Opera on Sunday to become the fourth highest-grossing live-action musical in the market, and will outgross the aforementioned La La Land to claim the #3 spot in just a few days. Look for this one to finish around the ¥4.8 billion ($45 million) mark, but it actually could reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone if it's able to hold onto enough screens when Golden Week (late-April) rolls around -- it's just very unlikely. >The Bastard and the Beautiful World missed the Top 5 with a sixth-place debut, but its weekend figure remains an estimate -- sometimes limited release take an extra day or two to have their actual released. However, since opening on Friday, it has sold 87,528 admissions.
  20. Based on Friday ticket sales, it won't even be in the top 20 this weekend.

The first: This is the first post-Spring Break weekend, and while the holiday period doesn't effect the weekend business as much as the weekday business, it still provides some change. The second: This is a post-Discount weekend, meaning that admissions last Sunday were greatly inflated, while avg. ticket prices were greatly deflated. So... Weekend admissions will be noticeably down versus last weekend (especially Sun.-to-Sun.), but the drops in gross won't appear as bad as the decline in admissions may indicate. Having said this, Disney/Pixar's Coco appears, at the moment, that it'll survive the post-SB quite well based on early ticket sales, and will hopefully hold up better than last year's Moana which experienced rather poor legs after the holiday period. The Boss Baby, on the other hand, should still do decently, but morning ticket sales suggests that Spring Break was supporting it more over the past couple weeks. And Doraemon always begins to drop hard in April given how young it skews. >Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has the slight advantage on Saturday in terms of advance ticket sales, but generally if an opener isn't comfortably ahead of a holdover in pre-sales, it's not usually able to keep pace with it as the day/weekend progresses. The film will have a significantly higher average ticket price over its animated holdover competition, but I don't see it keeping the admissions close enough to debut at #1 (I wouldn't rule out 2nd place yet though). >The Bastard and the Beautiful World is a difficult film to predict. It's a limited release, playing on 86 screens, and is a unique omnibus-style film. It performed solid yesterday, and its pre-sales this morning are also solid, but this one could very well be heavily frontloaded. >And finally, the tenth position this weekend is open to a variety of films. Call Boy carries a R18+ rating, so its average ticket price will be high, therefore I'm giving it the advantage over the other contenders.

  23. Yep, but next weekend might be even more important with fierce competition as both the annual Crayon Shin-chan movie and the annual Detective Conan movie are being released. Not to mention they're both being released on Friday instead of Saturday, for some reason, which will cut the other animated movies' screens and seats 24h earlier.
