Ben Affleck certainly gives a very good performance in this unusual twist on the spy story (in which the protagonist has autism, which is thankfully handled tastefully), but The Accountant becomes so bogged down in preposterous storytelling and jarring tonal shifts that it never really finds its groove. Affleck is really what keeps the film afloat, as the talented supporting cast can't do much with their paper thin characters (Anna Kendrick is resigned to playing damsel in distress while J.K. Simmons is called upon only to be the movie's source of lengthy exposition). There are a couple of nifty of action scenes, but there's still an overwhelming feeling overall that this isn't nearly as compelling as it should be. It might be worth a rainy day rental though. C+
