2024 Box Office Predictions and Discussion
James replied to kayumanggi's topic in Box Office Discussion
I think the crown for next year WW is between Joker 2, Deadpool 3 and Despicable Me 4. And I think Joker 2 will actually take it home (if it looks halfway decent) and be the only movie making 1b+. Deadpool and DM4 in the 900m range. -
Untitled Harry Potter Series | HBO Max

Also, even though I agree that they could have expanded the universe in some other way, lets not kid ourselves: the first season of this thing at least will be absolutely massive ratings wise. And if it is actually good (and I expect it to be since Rowling is producing and this time she already has the story) then the sky is the limit. -

Not only that but they will also keep the Hogwarts design as is (that yesterday was the official logo after all) and everything in the Wizarding World also because they have merch and theme parks - I bet the only thing that changes will be the actors. -

Look, LOTR is my favorite movie series ever but if you think there won’t be a LOTR remake in movie or TV form in 15 years max then then you are crazy (I can bet you Amazon will jump at that as soon as ROP wraps). -
Avatar :The Way of the Water OS thread
James replied to Sophia Jane's topic in International Box Office
It is already no. 1 in lc. Will become no 1 in USD this week and no 1 in admissions too likely (post 2000s). In USD at least there is literally nothing that could come remotely close to it in the next few years. Maybe Avatar sequels. But thats a big maybe. Doing 10m here is like doing 1.5b in the US. The first Avatar did 6.6m and so many years later nothing came even close to it. -

To give a few more details. Avatar increased 38% this weekend after increasing 21% last weekend. It will literally fly past the first Avatar this week to become the highest grossing movie ever in USD in Romania and it might actually end up around 10m if it keeps having good holds. The increase this weekend is especially mind blowing seeing how a local movie just registered the 2nd biggest OW ever in the market. -

Small market, but in Romania Avatar 2 had the 2nd biggest OW of all time in both lc and USD (1.36m) - behind FF7. The first Avatar is still the highest grossing movie ever in USD with around 6.4m. But in admissions and local currency a local movie, Tembuilding, beat it recently (977k admissions and still growing, though it will likely fall short of 1m adm). Avatar 2 does have a good shot at taking all crowns though (biggest movie in USD, lc and admissions). Let’s see how this weekend holds. -
Minions: The Rise of Gru | July 1, 2022 | Illumination

This franchise really is unstopable wow -
The show is good but the time jumps kill me because I can’t connect with a character since they are gone in a couple of episodes. Aside from Rhaenyra there are no likeable characters in this show, which is weird considering GOT had so many (the Starks, Tyrion, Dany and more). Also, Milly did a better job than Emma. They should have just condensed the timeline and kept her as an Rhaenyra. She really had that shine that made Emilia Clarke so likeable. Matt Smith is good, but if he dies in the next episode I will be just like meh (I know the fate of his characters, just saying). And Alicent is lite Cersei, with the difference that Cersei was so evil she was good in a way. The love for her children really gave her a sort if redeeming quality. But Alicent is so middle of the pack. Not good enough to root for, not bad enough to hate.

I dont understand why these comparisons even exist. LOTR is classic fantasy, good vs evil, built on archetypes. GOT is the exact opposite of archetypes, it tries to show the ugliness of humanity. I watch GOT HOTD because they are entertaining in a way. But they are not feel good or comfort shows. And they feel small in scale compared to classic good vs evil shows or movies. I watch LOTR because that’s a world that I would actually like to live in and it genuinely makes me happy. They are very very different.

You can call this show many things, but not boring. This is how Grace Randolph is saying she falls asleep watching the LOTR movies. Do you use that as an excuse for saying LOTR movies are terrible? I am a huge Tolkien fan (still have a few HOME books to get through, but that’s about it), but this headstrong hate for anything that doesn’t respect Tolkien’s word to the letter is so absurd. The only thing so far that felt contrived was the mithril thing only because it was useless. Otherwise this is a solid show. You can start nitpicking at it, but then again, if you really love Tolkien that much, you could tear apart the PJ movies (and no, I am not saying this show comes anywhere near those movies). Just goes to show how much unnecessary hate is out there.

Very positive thoughts from The Tolkien Professor. I am a huge Tolkien fan (read all the books, except for a few in the HOME series), but being a fan right now is so draining. This is my most anticipated piece of entertainment in years but being excited for it when there are so many toxic people trolling it online… I don’t think I have ever seen this level of hate directed at any movie/TV show ever. And it’s annoying af to fight with people who made up their mind about something they haven’t even seen (and yes, the marketing was piss poor for the most part).

No offense, but JK literally made sure the freakin fake boulders in the Wizarding World parks looked the way she wanted. I seriously doubt she would relinquish any creative control. Plus, look what a disaster happened with the Star Wars sequel trilogy after Lucas gave up control. The PT may be flawed, but they were still entertaining and creative, unlike what came after.

China Box Office Thread | Oppenheimer-August 30

Does Fantastic Beasts 3 have a release date? Or has a chance of getting one?
