  1. Wow, impressive result for Minions. Does anyone knows how many admissions Titanic had in Mexico? Cause it had 16 million in Brazil and generally speaking, Mexico tends to surpass Brazilian numbers.
  2. I come here to look for information on Brazil's box office and what I find? Unsolicited political opinions from the extreme right-wing. Can you guys stop derailing the topic? It's not only depressing it paints a terrible picture of my country.
  3. ^ There'll be a Wolf Children-esque movie though. Mamoru Hosoda's new movie, The Boy and the Beast, opens in July.
  4. Lots of young women across Japan buying advance tickets for the Cinderella movie. Apparently, you get some cutesy charm when you book early.
  5. I truly expect a really frontloaded result for Youkai Watch. It has a built-in fanbase and it's been promoted for months now so obviously everyone is going to see it asap. It'll do lots of money but I think huge legs are veeeeeery unlikely, especially cause there'll be virtually no word of mouth for this movie since it's just basically a longer episode of the TV show everyone in Japan already knows. What? Mangas have been popular for like a century and there are several Japanese live-action movies that were huge hits in the last few years: Eien no Zero; Thermae Romae; Hot Road; the Umizaru franchise; Like Father, Like Son; the Rurouni Kenshin movies..... I mean, several of those were based in mangas but they were still live-action movies.
  6. Doesn't Japan theaters have allocated seats? Why those lines are so huge?
  7. Because kids like it? It's like the Pokemon phenomenon in the late 90s.
  8. I think Ted 2 will do pretty well. The marketing for the first movie was perfect and it's still everywhere. But then, Japanese people move on from fads really fast so who knows...
  9. Very happy for "Gone Girl". Superb movie. Although, honestly, why the hell did it open on a much bigger number of screens than "Ao Haru Ride"? Did anyone really thought it had any chance of having a superior performance? "Ao Haru Ride" opens a bit better than "Kimi ni Todoke" movie (Y233.9 in 2010) which was the last shoujo manga with this type of huge mainstream success to be adapted as a movie (well, there's been Hot Road earlier this year but this is based on an 80s manga, not something from this generation). Hope it has better legs than the former though.
  10. I love THG franchise but given it had the biggest number of screens in Brazil's history, the opening results are a little "meh".... It's a shame it never exploded like the Twilight movie saga did (even though THG is faaaaar superior), especially considering all the special treatment it got (the last movie opening a week earlier than the rest of the world here, the huge number of screens for this movie, etc). That said, it's still doing very well, of course.
  11. According to the Japanese media, the Youkai Watch movie, which opens at the end of the month and is based on the popular children's anime, has surpassed 1 million tickets in advance sales, meaning it is the best advance sales in Toho's history. Toho is the biggest distributor in Japan. http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXLASFK14H1H_U4A211C1000000/ Promotion has been going on for months now and the Osaka loop line trains are currently wrapped with the show's characters http://news.mynavi.jp/news/2014/12/13/015/. No doubt it'll have a huge opening and, with the huge success of the Doraemon movie, it'll probably be the best year for non-Ghibli/Disney animations in history (and the best year for animations too, right? Given the record-shattering Frozen numbers).
  12. Matsu Takako was not in Hero 2 the TV show but she will be in the second movie And AJG, I don't care about Naruto but you should be careful about spoilers anyway.
  13. Oooh, Cinderella and Parasyte - Part 2 opening on the same day. It'll be embarrassing if the Toho movie opens at #2 (which is a strong possibility). And this list reminded me there's Yokai Watch Movie on Dec 20th. Definitely will be big.
  14. I heard the word of mouth from this new Naruto movie is terrible which surely can't mean very good things for the box office results in the long run but who knows... In any case, there will be a sequel out in August next year.
  15. I am a bit disappointed with Parasyte numbers. It had huge promotion and it actually looked decent, well-produced and had a good cast. Even though I'm not familiar with the original, it seemed like a very solid adaption unlike all the ones that are obviously just after a quick buck (the live-action adaptation of Lupin, for example). Then again, as a franchise, it is nowhere near as big as "Rurouni Kenshin" and it is been years since it was first published (it's not even an adaptation of a "hot" property right now) so I guess the numbers were to be expected. Next huge adaptation by Toho is the "Attack on Titan" one which seems to be like the epitome of EVERYTHING the Japanese public don't like: not faithful to the original and with a cast that is purely made out of actors and actresses that are hot right now and bear no resemblance to the original source material. Originally, they had a highly respected director attached to the project (Tetsuya Nakashima) but he jumped ship too. Even so, the manga creator seems to be heavily involved and the franchise is so huge there's no way it won't open big. But guess we will have to wait until next summer to see if it has legs.
  16. Barely registered here but read a lot of your bullsh*t and constant derailing on this topic (no wonder Brazil's thread is so messy compared to the other ones, so many silly arguments. And I'm contributing to that *facepalm*).... and it's plainly obvious you don't know ANYTHING about this law and yet you talk with so much confidence, it's absolutely ridiculous, especially considering it is a fact this law works. You just have to look at the state of the French and South Korean film industry compared to the country's where those laws aren't in place (trust me, the difference is huge). Embarrassing that you seem so proud of your ignorance. Stupid and uselessly costly? Yeah sweetheart, not even wasting my time arguing with you when your points are so moot. Just go and do some research.
  17. "Ted" was really the surprise Hollywood hit. Then again, it had a very big, Japan-oriented marketing campaign. It still exceeded expectations anyway.
  18. True. Also, the public About Time had the biggest buzz was very specific (trendy, urban women) and, given the movie's big popularity among women, I'd also guess that it probably did big business on "ladies' day" when tickets are heavily discounte. I'd say it'll do good business on rentals and such though, given the movie is still "buzzing" on social media which probably means it is still being discovered. Other movies that had big buzz among this segment in Japan this year on Instagram: Frozen; Maleficent; The Grand Budapest Hotel. The first two are not big surprises, the third one was definitely not a big hit but it did better than About Time. Also, Cinderella also buzzed when the trailer was released and given Disney's power among both kids and grown women and the success of Maleficent, I'm sure it'll do more than alright. Anyway, excited for Parasyte Part 1 this weekend. Huge marketing, big budgets and big expectations, let's see if it'll deliever. I have the impression the manga/anime is not as huge as Rurouni Kenshin among the general public but Toho and Kodansha clearly have huge expectations. Then, there is Ao Haru Ride, which is hugely popular among teen girls. The first weekend will be good just because it is such a popular franchise but the overall total will depends on how well word of mouth goes. Hot Road had really good word of mouth and did well this year, same with Kanojo wa Uso o Aishigiteru last year. The Kimi ni Todoke movie, which was really huge among girls in its manga form, was not as well-liked and did not reach its full potential (although it did good). So we will see how that one goes...
  19. I work at social media and "About Time" mentions was huge in Japan, especially on Instagram. It was also recommended by lots of influencers (i.e.: famous models/trendsetters among Japanese women). But yeah, all the buzz did not translate into B.O. money. The fact it was released late makes zero difference though. It's not like the Japanese public really cares about movies release outside Japan, especially "About Time"-type of movies. Plus, the culture of downloading Torrents or streaming movies is almost inexistent there.
  20. LOL, so many embarrassing opinions all over this post right now. The French regulation law is actually really good for French cinema and economy, whether you guys like it on a personal level or not. South Korea also has a similar law in place and it's been amazing for the development of their audiovisual market as a whole.
  21. There's been so much buzz over "About Time" in Japan among women, I'd expected the results there to be good but last time I checked it was nothing amazing. "Big Hero 6", "Parasyte" and the "Naruto" movie will be huge. Also, "Ao Haru Ride" will probably have an AMAZING first week.
  22. Why did the new Petit Nicolau flopped so bad? I thought the first one was well-liked by both the public and the critics
