I expected BA to be 40-50 range, so its overperforming my before the sales started expectations by around $5-10M. A week ago looked like may come in expected range, but the leaks made good bump in sales.

The theater was dead silent throughout Black Adam but clapped wildly at the post credit.

    What a world

And the people running WB and DC Films before the Discovery merger didn't want it to happen.

Yet people will still say Zaslav isn't a problem with WB...

I hate Twitter’s obsession with Rotten Tomatoes. The movie didn’t even open in the U.S. yet and they’re already treating it as a failure. Of course, reviews are relevant, and can potentially hurt a movie’s box office, but a lot of people just look at the RT score as the measure for success, and it makes no sense. These movies are made to sell tickets (and streaming subscriptions).

  3. I wonder if this will improve on rewatch, because the first time I was in shock at what the movie was. But watching it already knowing what it is may be quite enjoyable. The movie, after all, it's pretty well made for what it is. Last time I was this shocked at a movie in the theater was with the 2016 Suicide Squad, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

  4. This wasn't at the same level of some great fantasy shows we have these days like House of the Dragon, the underrated His Dark Materials, and even Stranger Things at times. But it's also not any worse than those DC, Marvel, Star Wars and Star Trek shows, which all have the writing quality of broadcast network TV. I understand expectations for Rings of Power were high, given the budget and the source material, but let's not pretend this isn't on par with a lot of highly successful geek content out there.

  5. Predicting the RT scores from the reactions has become so hard, it could go either way. Still hoping for a fresh score. But with all the talk about the cameo, and The Rock being a global draw, I’m still pretty confident in the film’s success. I’m rooting for it, The Rock seems like a nice guy who really tried his best the please the fans, and he’s been so enthusiastic about the film.

Those opening weekends were all about marketing/hooks. They did their job. People showed up. They were intrigued.

But you're ignoring their horrid second weekend drops and negative WOM. Off it's massive opening, Man of Steel should have finished up at $325-$350M. It topped out at $291M. Batman vs Superman was even more front-loaded and sank like a stone even harder than Man of Steel.

Those all made for quite the discussions here.

In the case of Man of Steel, it directly resulted in Batman v Superman happening instead of a Man of Steel sequel.

The numbers that matter (those subsequent drops after it's opening) literally show he wasn't the most popular actor in the DCEU. Otherwise we'd have had sequels to Man of Steel by 2015 as originally planned in between Man From UNCLE sequels.

    People lie. Numbers never lie.

I'm ignoring the second weekend drops because they didn't stop Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman from breaking opening records. If we're going by the numbers, they show audiences excited to see the movies around that character, despite whatever reception the previous film had. If the character returns and drives record breaking ticket sales for the franchise again, it doesn't matter how badly previous films were received.

People lie. Number never lie and the numbers absolutely do not back the claims of "that actor" being popular in that role.

Otherwise the DC Universe would have been wildly different after June 2013.

The movies with him in the lead are the 1st and 3rd biggest openings in the DCEU. The 2nd biggest opening was also a movie heavily promoted as connected to those other two (his character was even mentioned in the trailers). The numbers literally show him as the most popular actor in the DCEU.

  8. Saw it last night, it's pretty good and I recommend every LGBTQ member to go see it. I, too, was rolling my eyes at the way they were treating this like an important movie for representation when it didn't feel like something new, but after watching it I get it. The movie has a deeper meaning than just being a gay rom com. It was touching, funny and Billy Eichner is surprisingly brilliant as the lead, he is charming and you really care about the character.

  9. The $80M New Regency Russell all-star Amsterdam faces an uphill battle. There are aggressive tracking estimates out there of $12M-$15M, however, look for around $10M after the pic’s poor reviews of 28% Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.

If mom was divisive with a 75% on rt then I guess the bar for the mcu is far higher than the dceu.  I wonder why no one calls aquaman divisive despite having a 65% on rt and worse scores than mom everywhere.

I was talking more about audience reception, I had the feeling fans were divided on the film, because it didn't deliver what they were expecting. I didn't mean to suggest a DC vs MCU comparison (I actually liked Multiverse of Madness a lot). I just feel like there wasn't an universally well liked family comic book movie since No Way Home (from Marvel or DC) and if Black Adam can deliver on that, maybe it would have a pretty good word of mouth.

  11. Nice hold for Don't Worry Darling all things considered. With those reviews, audience reception and the negative media coverage, this should have been a big flop, but will end up at least breaking even theatrically, and then easily turning a profit on VOD where it should receive relatively more attention. These numbers will probably look even better when Amsterdam opens. Olivia Wilde handled the controversies with grace, delivered an entertaining thriller and succeeded in the end, what a Queen :worthy:

  12. Shazam's low budget can be seen on screen, Black Adam looks much better in my opinion. And I think Black Adam will easily outgross Shazam unless it's really terrible - which I'm not betting on being the case because Jaume Collet Serra is a pretty good director. While hype is not where it was at the DCEU's prime, I still think Black Adam is generating considerable more interest than stuff like Birds Of Prey, THE Suicide Squad and Shazam. I also think this is coming at the right moment, after how divisive were Multiverse Of Madness and Love and Thunder, and with The Batman and Wakanda Forever being more on the darker side, I think audiences are starving for a well made popcorn comic book movie - assuming Black Adam is one.
