Wow. With both Sing 2 and Sherlock Holmes 3 gone, there's really nothing standing in Avatar 2's way at all. I doubt anybody cares about the Croods anymore, which will probably gross sub-$150 million DOM even with holiday legs. Avatar faced two $200+ million DOM films during its run in comparison.

Presales Tracking Thread(Maoyan, Taopiaopiao etc)
KP1025 replied to Olive's topic in China At The Box Office
Endgame really has to deliver on the spectacle (even more so than Infinity War) if it wants over 9.0 on Maoyan. They've been very conservative in not showing any major action in the trailers so far. -

Is it confirmed that Detective Pikachu won't be taking IMAX from Endgame? Captain Marvel only had two weeks of IMAX before US took those screens if I remember correctly. -

JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW
KP1025 replied to Corpse's topic in International Box Office
If I had to guess, I'd say Frozen 2 since it is a direct sequel. People have already grown to love the characters and the world represented in the first film. Weathering with You is a completely different film from Your Name (sharing only the same director). What made Your Name such a huge phenomenon might not be so easily recaptured with this new film.- 24,124 replies

Wow, I think that would be the lowest multiplier I've ever seen for a major release in China. -

It didn't pass censorship because the subject matter contained possession/evil spirits among other things deemed unsuitable for general audiences. https://www.businessinsider.com/suicide-squad-likely-banned-in-china-global-box-office-2016-8 -

This is so depressing for Shazam. After the huge breakout of Aquaman, I was optimistic for future DC films in China. Before presales started, I really thought Shazam would break the usual solo CBM ceiling again like Venom, Aquaman, and Captain Marvel. Even $150 million didn't seem ridiculous at one point considering the very positive early reactions in the U.S. -

7.8 on Maoyan indicates terrible WOM among GA. Will mean a very quick collapse for Shazam and probably not much higher than 1.5x multiplier. -

The Human Comedy already down to 6.0. Rarely seen a new opener collapse so quickly on Maoyan. -

I'm also on the conservative side when it comes to The Lion King in Japan, but I'm not sure about using the performance of the original animated film to gauge potential success. Beauty and the Beast (1991) grossed under ¥4 billion, yet the remake grossed ¥12.4 billion. Also, the pop culture impact of The Lion King is far greater than Dumbo or The Jungle Book. The Broadway adaptation has been a huge hit in Japan and has been running for over 20 years in a permanent location.- 24,124 replies

Yes, BR and Green Book both have some of the highest scores ever for Hollywood films. Only F7 and Coco are higher at 9.6. -

Could be a lot more. Gavin says BR is going wide (not sure how many shows) on the 30th. Maoyan isn't showing any expansion yet though for the weekend. -
I believe it's still Spring Break in many places.

Locked. Domestic alone has around $15 million left, and OS can probably add at least another $12 million.

DUMBO (2019) | $237.5M Overseas, $352.2M Global
KP1025 replied to Purple Minion's topic in International Box Office
I don't think Dumbo is as familiar a tale as other Disney live-action remakes, so I would guess around $300 million OS as well. However, cute animal films are typically a easier sell in foreign markets (translates well across different cultures). It's also been a while since a major film targeted at kids was released (I doubt Wonder Park will make much OS). -

They can always change the origin story (which could be criticized for its stereotypes), but the character's comic history is undeniably Chinese. -

With regards to the Shang-Chi discussion a few pages back, I'm guessing this casting wouldn't go well in China either.
