  1. maybe they took an informed guess that the French team would be out fairly quickly :DThanks for this thread! I usually get my French BO figures from JP, he's usually the first to repost the (paying) CBO figures...
  2. :(and then they'll do a soulless HW remake, which will fail, and Americans will wonder for ever what the fuss was about (actually no they won't, lol, they probably couldn't care less)Glad for Will Smith that MIB3 looks to be having an ok-ish start.
  3. It's the first beautiful weekend in like forever in France. And the media/cinemas are all about the Cannes movies. Not the best weekend to release a blockbuster.
  4. The Godfather(s).And worse than not having seen it... I think it looks really, really boring
  5. Hmm not a very good date for the US then. That and the bad reviews... it may have to remain a euro-success story.I'm fascinated by how wildly the reviews can differ for this movie.
  6. I'm not so sure, because Snow White is opening later in a few countries (mid-June in France, Russia, Japan). The international release schedule is such a mess this June...
  7. it is opening a week early (May 31/June 1st) in a lot of European countries, including France, the UK and Russia. So they'll have a chance to open strongly there before the Euro cup starts.
  8. Yes exactly - it's surprisingly shocking when they change the usual voice actor for whatever reason. I remember the voice actors for the Friends cast went on strike back in the 90s, and they ended up replacing Rachel's "voice". It felt all kinds of wrong. Interesting idea. European filmmakers may want to look into it if they ever want to really break the American market. Or they could just hire American actors I guess, but I bet the CGI option is cheaper!
  9. Yes we also have a really good dubbing system in France with pretty good voice actors.I think dubbing mostly has an "image" problem in the UK and in the US, not sure where it comes from. People just hate the idea. Which is a shame, maybe the US would be more receptive to foreigns movies if they were dubbed with American voices?
  10. Oh it's not about understanding the original version, it's about the idea of getting the "genuine" experience, because nothing can replace the real voices, or something like that. I think...
  11. I think dubbing is one of these things... you have to grow up with it to be able to tolerate it! :lol:Then there's the "snobbism" factor. Regular people rarely if ever go watch French movies in the UK, it's mostly a select audience of artsy intellectuals, who think dubbing is beneath them. We have the same phenomenon in France, most people watch their movies dubbed, except in Paris where theatres offer subtitled versions for the artsy fancy Parisians.I say that preferring subtitles myself, of course
  12. I've never seen a French movie dubbed in the UK, they always use subtitles as far as I can tell.
  13. I'm surprised there's no UK release date yet. French movies tend to do pretty well there.
  14. the sheer productivity of bollywood actors never ceases to amaze me :)well I hope it goes well for him (but lol at Khiladi 786)
  15. I agree that a hispanic character would be the appropriate cultural translation for Omar Sy's character. Americans would interpret the story differently if a black person played the character, they would immediately see the movie as being about race relations. But in this story, what matters is not the skin colour of the character, it's the fact that he comes from a poor immigrant minority. Which is why it was ok, I think, to have Sy play him. The "real" guy was an Algerian immigrant, Sy plays an African immigrant - in social terms, it's really equivalent, in France.
  16. Seriously? Again?About Housefull 2, and to the Indian posters here: I don't know much about Indian cinema, but I've seen a few old Akshay movies that I really enjoyed. I've also seen some of his new comedy stuff which I absolutely hated. Am I correct in thinking he only seems to be doing crap comedies nowadays? Bloody waste of talent if you ask me.
  17. Well I'm not sure how movies play during the euro cup, I guess it could go either way, if all the girls flock to the theatres to avoid the football talk.At least there is very little competition on that date, which is an improvement on the previous date, when it was coming out at the same time as Prometheus!
  18. They just pushed back the French release to June 13 :(Presumably to avoid Prometheus. But now it's bang on in the middle of the euro cup.
  19. Oh, and here's one: Clint Eastwood's "Letters from Iwo Jima" (2006). Made 13M in the US, and 43M in Japan. The movie was in Japanese, but IMDb does list it as an American production.
  20. wow well done! I never would have thought of that! yeah Asterix and Cleopatra is a classic. The pudding song... lol. Great stuff.
  21. great movie!! :DI looked for specific numbers, and while the movie is indeed famous for being a great success in Germany, it was also very successful in France. It seems it sold 3M tickets in Germany, and 3.5M in France. http://tinyurl.com/c4nck8b
  22. but presumably that's because you have the entire German market nearby?! in the same way, I can think of quite a few English movies that made more money in the US than in the UK... I'm trying to think of French examples, but I'm coming short. Only The Artist comes to mind. I guess the key is having a much bigger, same-language market, which we don't have. My entry for the thread was going to be Cronenberg's Crash (made more in France), but I just remembered that it was a Canadian movie. Dammit.
