  1. Then there is another word fitting your status. Casual movie fan. also a director your username based on, he is playing those Oscar or film festival game. But that doesn’t make him pretentious, it was just part of his professionalism. Also paying attention to award show or film festival isn’t pretentious, it is just part of the inevitable if one develop deep interest in filmmaking. You know what is pretentious? Aimlessly admiring the award wining movie.
  2. You still can be movie buff without knowing Oscar, just a failed one. It is like you can be a MCU fans but still don’t know what is the after credit scene of Thor 3. Of course you can still self proclaim you are, but that will definitely draw a question mark from your peer mcu fans
  3. Lol, you still don’t get the point. It is not about whether which is more credible. It is about if you are in a certain profession or passionate interest, you are bound to pay attention to certain event. It is part of the professionalism or knowledge buildup. Like how central bank decision to economists. are you sure you are in film school? Or are you even paying attention in class? I was in film class and watching award wining movie, not only oscar, but Cannes , Venice to golden horse is part of the assignment. In the end one may have zero clue what the hell is their decision but this is part of the process. Just like in economics class, you bound to investigate the nonsensical hyperinflation in Zimbabwe regardless how small and little impact that country to the world
  4. Lol, the most laughable post in a while. Movie buff and geek are two different groups. One can disagree about Oscar choice but ignoring it is like an economist ignoring FED decision to either go for rate cut or rate hike. and most importantly, movie review is always subject to subjectivity. Oscar is just a platform to showcase that subjectivity.
  5. Actually I am not sure how one can call themselves a movie buff if they still don’t know coda exists. it is like a football fan doesn’t know which country won the last fifa World Cup.
  6. I feel bad hamaguchi and all DMC cast, they came from Japan for Oscar, likely not able to fully understand the entire award show since it was conducted in English, only to be further confused by will smith act.
  7. I actually disagree with the 3rd point. The international attention for the Oscar actually grew in recent year. Just look at parasite year, and multiple there was multiple coverage across new outlets or TikTok talking about Oscar winner green book. It is in the USA where the Oscar relevancy falls
  8. I think even will smith he himself failed to predict this. but still, i won 8 free movie tickets for predicting correctly in almost all categories except best action film, nothing more to complain.
  9. Sometime it is not always about how widely seen the nominees, but how the entertaining the ceremony. 70th Oscar may have miracle-like blockbuster like titanic in the mix but the ceremony if you look back, was so much more well energetic.Just look at the opening monologue, and see how responsive the crowd.
  10. Just finish the movie. Overall the movie is effective and moving but there were time I feel they have overdone the plot. The switching between mandarin and English is a bit carelessly done. Same goes to editing, they overdoing it. most importantly, if you epilepsy, you need to be careful with the light strobe effect used in the movie. There is one particular scene even I myself find it uncomfortable to watch.
  11. https://www.tvinsider.com/1038228/oscars-2022-ratings-viewership/amp/ the later revised figure at 15.4m show that will smith moment hasn’t been factored into these early rating. Here is the quote “The Will Smith-Chris Rock moment came in the third hour of the show, with Smith’s win for Best Actor then coming after 11/10c (which is not factored into the early numbers).” so who know the number will go higher and coming nearer to 17m to 18m. But still a flop after so many attempts to bring a big jump. This is even meh considering there was no golden globe this year that should at least reduce the award show fatigue.
  12. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/oscars-tv-ratings-sunday-march-27-2022-1235120758/ Preliminary rating: 13.73m, up from 10.4m last year but no way close to pre pandemic time
  13. To be fair, last year nobody has mood for movie. Everything about movie from Oscar to box office to even this thread was dead silent for months.
  14. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield must be wondering why every time when he got nominated, the winner is bound to be in a controversy.
  15. I wonder if it is Chris rock’s idea to joke about someone’a illness or someone in his team recommend this. Now it is not only those categories that were announced outside of live telecast were ignored, the entire 23 categories and fan favourite was overshadowed
  16. Unlike the past snafu, which happened in the last minute of Oscar ceremony. Will smith incident happened during the “peak” of the show with him likely wining best actor later. This may actually help rating for real.
  17. This is the most predictable Oscar in many many years. All frontrunner won
  18. If will smith came on stage and said ,”my wife still the most beautiful lady in the world” , then the situation will be handled beautifully. But he choose the worst way to defend his wife
  19. Instead of we don’t talk about Bruno, We talk about will smith
  20. Lol, since all winners are predictable, they decide to create their own drama
  21. Paul Thomas Anderson may never win…if this keep going on like this
  22. Hollywood male star tend to look just like their age or even older. It seem like you have to get rid of your baby face to earn respect, for male star at least. A trend that not really exist in the east
