Oh ya all those attempts was made during 91st oscar. But turns out despite nothing changed in the end , that was one of the more enjoyable ceremony in recent memory. I actually quite enjoy 89th and 86th(when Ellen hosted) in particular. -

So this year ceremony is like 92nd Oscar all over again. First we have Oscar fan favourite category like a tone down version of best popular movie and now this. Just like how they first attempt before 92nd Oscar. I wonder what next? -

I don’t like all these obligatory and widely promoted streaming date before the movie has even lifted its embargo. So far I think Disney have the best approach among all aside from their pathetic treatment to Pixar release . They are keeping streaming debut date in the dark until later stage and give flexible window according to their box office run, like 60 days for KM, about 70 days for eternals and SC. That being said, I hope every studio be like Sony. -
Sometime I am really really impressed by the way neon handle non English film, from their historical win of parasite to the portrait of fire lady and this year worst person in the world and flee, they can hit quite impressive box office and award mark for a lot of their non English film . At this rate the worst person will beat DMC for sure despite not a major contender

I think universal is still doing their 17 days (sing2) or even day to date release. also the soft drop for NTTD and ghostbusters may likely due to lack of competition during their late run, instead of streaming posing no impact. Also NTTD did gross less than spectre, so the impact may very absorbed in the opening weekend or 2nd weekend. 2nd weekend drop is where you can see impact from streaming since second weekend audience are generally more causal and less enthusiastic but they’d still be interested in seeing the film. Unfortunately the second weekend hold for major film has been tepid since reopening.

Also, the past 40 reviews posted on RT, 8 of it are rotten which translate 80% fresh, it is a downward trend too since the average is 93% -
That is why 45 days or 17 days window is total bullshit. I just can’t understand why rushing to streaming, a platform you got to stay forever? Hope for more flexible approach like between 45-60 days or even 75 for some mega grosser like NWH depending gross size or legs. Even if they have a streaming date, don’t announce it upfront so that potential audience will not have incentive to wait for streaming.

Any number that come higher than 108m (dune total) will put a smile face on me for batman since that is an instant mockery to WB for their stupid hbo max deal. -

I was referring typical mainstream blockbusters, those many example you mention are already Oscar bait or drama fare that voters are born to watch and therefore message or not, there is no concern. For a mainstream movie to be considered, entertainment value or the quality are not really metrics. District 9, Mad max fury road or black panther certainly telling us just what academy will pay attention to. The pure flick that I can think of as a message-less best picture nominees in recent year include inception, the Martian and nothing else…. -

If no way home making 1.8bn during pandemic won’t change their mind, nothing will. The way they nominate drive my car as best picture means they care their selection of best picture nominees. Academy is a group made up of near 10k voter where they don’t really have a direct or contracted interest with Oscar rating. They won’t make extra bucks because of surge in Oscar rating. Therefore there is no incentive for them to pick a populist movie fanboy bait movie. if avatar 2 ever got nominated, it is likely due to its environmentalist message like the first. You can’t expect a straight pop corn fan fare in the best picture line up. They want message and social relevancy. This has been demonstrated year after year and no sign they are giving up on the “criteria requirements”
