  1. The day-and-date on HBO Max for the first movie had a much bigger impact in the USA than in most of the world.

In most countries, HBO wasn't even available. So watching in theaters remained the only option (or the other option that shall not be named)

In that context, it seems pretty obvious how not having a day-and-date release on HBO for the 2nd movie would have a much bigger impact in the US than in other countries

  2. This feels like watching the child resulting from a marriage between Game of Thrones and Star Wars. Except this is older than both of them, so it's more like watching their… grandparent?

I love both of these (or, at least, I used to love both of them) so naturally I'm loving Dune.

One thing I didn't expect was Timothée Chalamet stepping up big time. I wasn't feeling it too much with him in the first movie, but in this he really went like, okay I need to deliver. And he did. Splendid.

I also thought Chani would be a one-note bland character; I'm really glad to have been wrong.

Stunts - 80/100 | The action is sharp and exciting. Blockbusters sometimes do have it in them to awe an audience, and this is one of those. The money went to the right place.

Narrative - 88/100 | The less they explain things, the better. And here they explain roughly… not much. Just what you need to follow the story. I love it. The mythology is just so goddamn interesting though, I might just go and pick up the books. It's a middle chapter so, know what to expect.

Fight Choreography - 80/100 | Denis is cutting his fights less and less. 👍

Enjoyment - 94/100 | That third act though. Jesus… Guys, blockbusters this good are absolutely fucking rare. Don't miss this! In theaters if possible.

I'll be at the station waiting for the hype train that is Dune: Part Three. ETA: unknown. But I'll be there.

    The spice must flow.

Whaaaat!? There's a board game? And I missed it. Is it any good? E.g. comparing to Settlers of Catan - Cities and Knights?

    Yep

It's pretty great! Finished 2nd place playing the Harkonnens. It's long though, game lasted 3 hours. It's a sort of merge of Dominion and Stone Age, except much more complex and longer.

You are clearly a dune hater at least based on the bs you said in pre sales thread.

Concern trolls say they are fans of something, "oh I so want it to be good, but..."

    The "but" is key here.

    Quote

A concern troll is a person who participates in a debate posing as an actual or potential ally who simply has some concerns they need answered before they will ally themselves with a cause. In reality they are a critic.

They're always "concerned" about the success of something but "hey, I'm a big fan, I'm just concerned!"  Then if you stalk their messages you realize that the only coherent line of thought throughout is that they actually want it to fail. AKA, the opposite of what they're saying. They only act like an ally because being an upfront hater is ill-perceived, especially in close-knit communities, so concern trolling it is (it's more subtle, harder to spot)

WTF is everyone on about. Where is this 500M doom and gloom coming from?

Dune 1 made 2.6x its OW domestic while being widely available on streaming Day 1. Dune 2 at minimum opens with 75M and 2.6x of that already 200M. I am willing to bet that it hit 3x for like 230M or so.

Dune 1 made 300M OS. This one is opening at least 50% larger in every market, some even doubling. Same legs send it almost 450M OS already. Personally, I see it hitting 500-550M for much better reception.

Even at lower end for both DOM and OS, it is making 600M WW, and high end 750M+. That's is blockbuster level for sure, especially with a very reasonable budget of under 190M.

This movie is literally firing on all cylinders from quality to reception of critics and audiences and box office number alike and some of you guys are still like puff this thing flops eck so meh. WHAT???

"everyone". It's literally just one person, let's stop feeding that one person and poof, the doom and gloom stops.

Anyway with this Saturday... it could almost be considered off-topic now

  5. More accurate title: The Shortcuts (2023).

The movie shines in its smaller moments. Except, it would, if only it gave us time to take in those moments. It moves at an incredibly brisk pace, even by Marvel standards.

Moreover, many, many things just don't make sense. This movie has no internal logic whatsoever. They're switching, one of them is on Earth, another is in another galaxy. Oh wait, they're all together now, instants later! What? If a character needs to be in a scene, they get there, logic be damned.

Stunts - 60/100 | The switch shenanigans had massive potential, unfortunately it ended up being more confusing than fun. I could say that for many different aspects of this movie: good idea, terrible execution. The CGI was overall decent, I expected worse from Marvel these days.

Narrative - 50/100 | Why reveal Carol's past and motivations so late in the story? Knowing about her guilt early on would be so much better for us as viewers. The first half of the story had no cohesive line, it's just random scenes stitched together. Scene over? Ok, onto the next, gogogogo. We have no idea why anyone does anything. Eventually the story comes into focus, and the core idea of it is certainly adequate enough, but by then it's too late. Oh you're lost? Here's a swarm of cats! Knowing about Carol's past early on would anchor the viewer into… something, at least, early on.

Fight Choreography - 69/100 | The fights are surprisingly not garbage, the editing is good. But they aren't great either. I loved the kick-into-switch-teleport into hammer combo. But yeah, it's superhero fights you've seen countless times already. More of the same, no stakes.

Enjoyment - 51/100 | The fight scenes editing was decent. The actual narrative editing of the movie was shit-tier. It's just a convoluted mess. The weird planet was the best part (Park Seo-joon!). Brie Larson was just so bland… I blame the writing.

Kamala Khan was, and is, delightful, as I was expecting after watching Ms. Marvel. A shame that the title character ended up shafted though. Or rather, who should have been the title character. Which brings me to…

After watching Thor: Love and Thunder and this, my conclusion is that I think they should have stuck with Carol Danvers as the main character here, with someone else providing a supporting role: Thor! They're both on the cosmic side, their few interactions in Avengers: Endgame were fun, I think it would have worked really well. I feel like what happened off-screen between the first movie and this one sounds much more interesting than what we got. Adding in Thor could have ramped up the stakes, the comedic elements (Chris Hemsworth's comedic timing is impeccable), and they work well together as they're both cosmic heroes.

Instead we got this. I'm not even sure what the point of the movie was? Kamala Khan stole the show but Carol Danvers shouldn't be grounded to Earth, I think she'd be put to better use introducing many aspects of the cosmic universe, such as The Beyonder (who is no doubt going to come into the picture eventually since Kang seems to be on the way out), the Living Tribunal, and other important cosmic entities relevant to the Secret Wars storyline, which we know they're adapting. Basically, it would help bridge the current state of the MCU, which is aimless, to what's coming so that it doesn't come out of left field later, which I suspect is what will happen if they keep this up.

Anyway, end of my rant about my alternate plans for Captain Marvel 2, which instead became The Marvels. I think this movie's biggest sin remains that Carol Danvers is boring. Again.

    She shouldn't be!

  6. Regardless of how positive Ms.Marvel's reception was, or how she was the best part of the movie (which I agree with), the fact remains that a lot of people thought that watching Ms.Marvel before watching The Marvels was required viewing, and they hadn't seen it, and decided to skip the movie.

    That hurts the movie.

Marvel's decision to make TV shows required viewing is backfiring massively on them. Just to give you an example, my brother and his wife watched every single marvel movie until the TV shows started coming in. We went to theaters to watch them, every time, you can't say they're not "fans enough". But they have a kid, they're busy, they have to select what they watch more than before, and those TV shows Marvel are putting out, well, they're coming out faster than they can watch them. They watched WandaVision, Loki, and a few others, but they can't keep up.

So for the first time since 2015 my brother and his wife skipped a marvel movie, because they haven't seen Ms.Marvel (or Secret Invasion either). Who knows when they'll have time to watch those.

And these are pretty big fans of the MCU we're talking about. They're always excited for a new Marvel movie. I know it's anecdotal but imagine how worse it is for the GA

Now you see why The Marvels flopped. It has nothing to do with the quality of Ms.Marvel. It has everything to do with the fact that it is required viewing in the eyes of many, and many skipped it for various reasons, and oh wow guess what... they skip that one too
