Still does mean sales should be lower than they were for Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 DOM. You expect some diminishing returns but with inflation since Vol. 2 you'd expect even with lower admissions that Vol. 3 could come close its totals both OW DOM and DOM TOTAL. Which, doesn't appear to be the case here... I think it has a lot to do with audiences feeling let down by most superhero movies since the pandemic hit really. I think the only two that were pretty widely liked have been The Batman and Wakanda Forever and, maybe, No Way Home. Guardians are more widely known as characters that ever before and they were not poorly received at all in Infinity War and Endgame... Those only boosted their popularity.

Guardians' Xmas special is below 7 on IMDB. It has more to do with them than some other films. And No Way Home was widely liked. Spiderman and Batman are still the biggest superheroes by a mile.

Eh... Not buying this... Especially given increases No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness, Love & Thunder and Quantumania saw post Endgame. I think this is more so a sign of the general malaise of most of the recent superhero movies since Endgame not delivering... And, I don't just mean the MCU ones either.

they all had special characters that increased their openings. as you said Guardians are just Guardians with Groot not looking cute for the first time

$125m would seem decent considering the tracking thread. But it’s still less than the last film.

may be fans of Guardians overhyped their appeal. the second movie did just a little bit better than the first one. there is a ceiling. and considering second movie was not as good as the first one which was great, and special was "special", here we are.

Encanto was a box office flop and Disney+ had conveniently protected Turning Red/Luca from questions about it's success. Disney's animation output has gone from leading the industry to being a whatever compared to Universal's output in a short time, and that is a major problem. Especially when Universal are making their animated films at half the budget that Pixar/WDAS is spending, which puts pressure on all these new Disney IPs to gross close to a billion in BO.

lol who cares. if you chose any other animated fims from Pixar/Disney from recent years you would have an argument but those 3 are certified future classics, Encanto was played like a concert film already, it's a classic. It saved Disney+ when it was released there.

Ugh I should have just watched the leaked cam trailer.

Also LOL @ Disney automatically assuming Superbowl audiences are racist. This seems to have been a very last minute decision otherwise we would have gotten a trailer last Sunday with the Grammys for sure.

more like Superbowl is the male event of the year while Little Mermaid is the total opposite of it. It would be a waste of money. I think Oscars will be more suitable.

Encanto has had monstrous streaming nums but missed 100M. I think Soul had really big potential but I wouldn’t expect the other two to hit 100M tbh.

yeah, it's a funny thing. I think Soul had huge BO potential in USA but I think Encanto, Luca & Turning Red will have more longevity in the end no matter BO. Just look at Moana & it's small BO compared to some other animation hits.

Strange World is going to finish with a total barely higher than Treasure Planet at this point. Brutal.

should probably fire the director - Raya had all the ingredients to be a knockout, and it was only OK.

Also The Little Mermaid won't be hit by the "anti-wokers". They have no power on a movie's success or popularity. If anything, I'm confident that it could rank second for the year, only behind Indiana Jones.

tbh we don't know. Little Mermaid is the first remake from the big 4 where they change the main character. How much their success is based on being as similar as possible to the original we'll see with her cause it should be easily doing a billion cause Little Mermaid arguably is only less popular than Lion King but we'll see. At least it's still a musical(cough cough Mulan)

I did say around this time last year, even if in the immediate aftermath it might've looked stupid given Encanto's eventual streaming success, that there is a "sameness" that is starting to take hold in Disney's feature length animated work. Very little to distinguish Strange World aesthetic wise from all the other recent WDA movies. They could use of a shot of the visual creativity they display in their Short Circuit programs to give their future movies a more interesting hook, and maybe greenlighting more personal ideas that are the kind of thing that keeps Pixar afloat. Can't say I'm very optimistic about Wish at the moment.

in what world?  I would say the opposite problem is true - Strange World has some weird unappealing faces on all main characters compared to the usual Disney animation. I haven't seen the film yet (and I bet I'll like it enough) but it's a choice. And Wish just from previews already looks great - both the main character & the goat.

Disney and Pixar need fresh writers. Animation on their front has taken a serious hit this decade in terms of quality.

Pixar just had Luca & Turning Red. I think they'll stand the test of time. And Disney clearly has some b-team working on these non musical projects & they are too safe, they should try something radical with these cause like what's the point then. I understand that probably not everybody wants to make musical animated films but then at least have some cool ideas for your stuff or don't try it.

Hard to emphasize how badly Chapek has bungled the marketing for this and how poorly this could bode for Disney's future animated offerings if his recent comments are anything to go by....

I like most of Disney's animation films but this film looks unappealing. May be it'll be some hidden gem(I remember how I was first not into Moana at all) we'll see.

After watching Pinocchio I honestly haven’t got it in me to write anything in anticipation for any live action reimaginings for a while.
The movie was an absolute insult, and one of the worst films the studio have ever produced.

I say that as a massive Zemeckis fan, but there’s just no excusing a debacle of a film in every respect.

I’ll shake it off and get semi hyped for Mermaid in a few months, but for now I’m really disgusted with what they did with Pinocchio.

they need someone with ideas at the head of their live-action division. it always struggled but still. I blame in part the last Bob for this, so if this Bob can find such person he'll leave a good legacy.

One thing I've been wondering, and maybe this isn't mattering, but Disney has been wildly pissing off its fans with its park policies lately (enough to make national morning tv a few weeks back)...I wonder if overall Disney unhappiness (on top of their still happy, but happy to stay home, D+ subscribers) has been reducing their "always go to their movies" base, even just a little.

This applies more to Encanto than WSS, although both were heavily marketed under the Disney brand...

or we can just look at average box office of the most popular film of the last several years Moana and super beloved & praised Coco

Nicole Kidman! She and Moore were actually considered for the Emma Thompson role in Cruella so it wouldn't be surprising to see their names in the mix for this too.

There's also Renee Zellweger, who is having a big comeback moment right now with Judy.

the question is if they wanna make this a full on musical they need someone who can sing
