  1. Haven’t been on here in a while but this move by WB interested me a lot. I think their biggest mistake was moving their whole slate to HBO Max without consulting anyone about it. What they should have done is waited to see how Wonder Woman did and then make a decision by talking with filmmakers and talent about their options with regards to streaming. Look as much as it pains me to say this: no one knows when things are going to go back to normal. A vaccine is getting ready to be implemented, yes, but we don’t know what the long term effects with regards to immunity are, we don’t know how compliant people are going to be in getting vaccinated and finally even if the vaccine works, we don’t know when people are going to be comfortable with going back to the theaters. After what happened with Tenet and looking at the state of the box office, I don’t blame WB at all for deciding to put their 2021 slate on HBO Max because there’s so much uncertainty moving forward. What I blame them for is how they handled and executed it. The people involved should have been consulted. Point blank. Unfortunately because they weren’t, WB probably shot themselves in the foot and consequences of this decision are going to be felt for years. I certainly feel like this was an impulse decision by them thinking they’d look good publicly by making their films available for streaming during the pandemic and giving HBO Max a much needed boost but i don’t believe they thought through how the industry would view it. In the end they fucked over their relationship with a bunch of top talent and they don’t even know if this will be a benefit to them financially which I imagine is the biggest reason why they went through with this decision so a big mess all around that could have been avoided if WB ya know talked to the people involved in making these films.
  2. I haven’t been on here for months for personal reasons but this news about Chadwick just gutted me. Really hit home hard. If anyone personally knows someone who’s battling cancer you’ll know that each day is a complete curve ball and you never know what to expect. And that’s from watching on the sidelines and not being the person actually battling such a cruel disease. I can’t help but think how he was fighting this battle without any of us knowing while also giving us so many roles that we’ve come to love. My thoughts are with his family. Cancer can get fucked and take 2020 along for a ride with it.
  3. Jumanji’s legs are incredible. It just keeps chugging along. I know it’s going to make less than the movie before it but its box office run has been a pleasant surprise. As someone who enjoyed the film a lot, I still didn’t expect it to have the type of legs that it’s having.
  4. The point of my post wasn’t to discuss which movies were bigger flops/bombs but rather to talk about the coverage those movies received when they failed to do well at the box office
  5. The bigger the property, the bigger the target. That’s why a movie like Birds of Prey will have its box office numbers dissected the way it did and why a movie like Call of the Wild most likely won’t. I’m not saying it’s fair but the reality is that you’re going to get far more people to read an article about Birds of Prey and it’s box office than you are about Call of the Wild. In an ideal world, Call of the Wild will have articles written about it being a bomb similarly to how Birds of Prey got called a flop but to be honest I just don’t think people care enough about Call of the Wild for that to happen. I’m sure eventually Call of the Wild will have its fair share of articles written about it being a failure but I just don’t think it’s anything urgent to cover for the reason I mentioned above. Not sure why Dolittle is being brought up though as it has had several articles written about it being a box office failure in the same way that Cats did. The reason why those articles weren’t as prominent (if that’s the right word) is because it opened the same weekend as BB3 which got all the attention and rightfully so since it broke out in a big way.
  6. If you had told me a month ago that Sonic's 4 day OW would be higher than BOP's first 11 days in theaters, I'd have laughed in your face. Guess the joke's on me.
  7. Irishman was dull and boring. By far the worst of the best picture nominees. The Farewell and/or Uncut Gems should have taken its spot.
  8. There was just something so special about seeing an all Asian cast, director and producer accepting best picture at the fucking Oscars while also speaking in Korean. But I think what adds to it all is that The Academy got it right. Parasite deserved best picture, best screen play and Bong deserved best director.
  9. When The Academy gets best picture right we all win. Best Screen play and best director were very much deserved as well and Im glad the Academy got those picks rights too. Parasite was the best film released last year and it deserves all the awards it’s getting.
  10. The Lucy comp took me out like it’s so random and so out of the blue
  11. A lot of overreactions in this thread. We don’t really know which way this film is going to go. Sure WOM can push it to have good legs but I feel like a lot of people don’t realize that WOM doesn’t help a movie at the box office if people have no interest in seeing it to begin with. I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen with BOP but what I’m saying is good reviews and good WOM doesn’t always translate to box office results. Having said that, I think BOP having a soft opening puts it in a better position to develop strong legs than the typical CBM. Let’s see how next weekend goes since it is a holiday weekend which should help the movie before sending the film to the graveyard after *two days* at the box office.
  12. A “professional” writer said this in the write up of a box office article. Clearly deadline is not biased at all.
  13. This is TROS all over again. Can’t wait for the daily updates from Deadline about the sold out showings with Harley Quinn themed parties in the lobby at the AMC in Naples Florida.
  14. The problem with BOP wasn’t its rating. Deadpool (and it’s sequel), Joker and Logan all showed that an R-rating isn’t going to hinder a comic book movie’s box office the way we thought it would. And in fact can actually help the movie’s box office. We can all agree that those movies were good because they were able to expand past that PG-13 rating. I imagine BOP is in the same boat where a PG-13 rating would probably hinder its quality. BOP was a poorly marketed movie with bad trailers and a character who we thought was more popular than she actually is.
  15. I’m not trying to brush off DV with what I’m about to say but umm two years from now the general public isn’t going to care about this story....if they even care about it to begin with. So the box office will not be affected by this in the slightest. And if anything, WB recasting her would make the situation worse and bring about a ton of questions on why they recast her whether it’s from people who had no idea about the situation or people who knew about the situation but are asking why they recasted her but haven’t recasted people involved with DV in the past. I know it’s probably an unpopular opinion amongst PR people but sometimes not reacting and not responding is the best thing a celebrity or a studio can do. Because the controversy blows over and the internet moves onto the next one.
  16. Just did a quick read through this thread and it seems like it’s presales are below that of Shazam pretty much everywhere. I hope that WOM can help it get a decent total but it seems like unless domestic over performs on OW then an opening less than Shazam (even without China) is pretty much happening. Hopefully the good reviews can give it the bump it needs domestically. My biggest fear though is the good reviews won’t give it that big of a push similar to how good reviews didn’t give Shazam that big of a push either. I guess we shall find out soon enough.
  17. What? Sorry I haven’t had the chance to pay a lot of attention and I just jumped into this thread.....but ummm 😐
  18. I wouldn’t call a movie that’s looking to open north of $100M WW DOA. But as I mentioned in its main thread, this movie’s BO will depend on WOM now since WB didn’t do a good job of marketing it. Seems like presales all over, not just in the USA, are below that of Shazam! which imo is inexcusable with a film starring Harley Quinn.
  19. Hey guys so I know I said I’d have some tracking for you for BOP but unfortunately something came up that’s personal that I need to be more attentive to and as a result I won’t be on here as often. I was looking forward to actually tracking movies again with BOP, Sonic and some bigger films in March particularly a Quiet Place coming up. The data I was going to give was very minuscule anyways and you guys would do a great job with or without it. I love your posts and I love tracking box office with you guys even through the surprises and through the bombs (we won’t speak of the historical bomb that occurred this weekend though). Keep up the great work and I hope to be able to check in from time to time.
  20. I was going to do a first update for BOP but two of the theaters still don’t have showtimes up for it so I guess it’ll have to wait until Monday 😕
