  1. I would've voted for TOL if Turin Horse hadn't been there (and maybe I should've, because the thought of DH2 being accepted as the movie of any year makes me puke).
  2. The Turin Horse, absolutely, except how the hell did it end up there? I guess I wasn't the only one who originally voted for it
  3. Maybe Phillips wins this as a consolation prize, since I can't see it winning anywhere else.
  4. Never watched the trailer, but it's got the subject matter, it's got the director, it's got the cast, it's got Harvey, it's got early critical raves, it's got the Best Screenplay award from Venice, and it's got the crowdpleasing thing going as well. OK, I'm not gonna go all Ric and claim that it's a LOCK for nominations, goddammit!, but honestly, I'd be seriously surprised if it somehow missed Picture, Actress, and Screenplay.
  5. The Fifth Estate averaging $99 in its second Friday is hilarious. It'll probably lose, like, 1500 or more of its theaters next weekend.
  6. It could have expanded better, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna have a longer life in theaters than Precious, which essentially burned out by mid-December and ended up earning 95% of its total gross before the Oscar nominations were announced.
  7. Maybe WB should have just given The Conjuring a 1-week wide expansion
  8. With 30% weekend drops (which will get worse once Thor and CF come out), I don't know if Gravity still has any real chance to beat MOS. And if it does, it better fucking reach $300m after that
  9. With that Friday it'll almost certainly have the $20.5m weekend it needs to pass $200m. Can't lie, though: after that phenomenal second weekend hold, I expected Gravity's subsequent legs to be just a little bit stronger. Not that I'm not happy it's gonna make $250m DOM and possibly even $275m.
  10. Hardy's a total chameleon. Just watch his work in Bronson, Tinker Tailor, Warrior and TDKR and try to argue that he isn't.
  11. I didn't vote because there are probably less than 10 TV shows from which I've seen more than a few episodes, but the lack of Mad Men, The West Wing, Arrested Development and Firefly is pretty surprising. Twin Peaks too, considering its stature.
  12. Almost certainly 12YAS. Maybe American Hustle if it's a big hit with everybody and consequently gets all nominations it can realistically get (BP, BD, Screenplay, two or three acting nods, Production and Costume Design, Make-Up, Editing - there you've already got ten). Even then, 12YAS is likely to receive all those noms plus Cinematography and Score, which AH will probably miss out on. I think Gravity will get BP, BD, Actress plus five technical noms (Cinematography, VFX, Editing, Sound, Sound Editing) and also probably Screenplay and Score, so from 8 to 10.
  13. If we aren't just talking present day, then Claudia Cardinale circa 1960s probably beats everyone else for me.
  14. The little girls in The Shining Katie watching Micah sleep for hours in Paranormal Activity The reveal of Mother in Psycho The man behind the Winkies in Mulholland Drive
