Godzilla vs Kong was smart editing. They cut out unnecessary backstory for a number of characters. IIRC, Eiza Gonzalez was supposed to have some daddy issues backstory, similar with Serizawa's son, same with the evil corporation, and more mumbo jumbo with the skull and stuff. Someone along the way realised that no one cares about that stuff and inserted a big fight every 20 minutes instead.

This was the thing I heard most from people three years ago. They were glad that the characters were there purely for exposition and not to follow around.

I hate to say it, but I think future writers are going to just stick with spectacle for the MonsterVerse. It's the only thing that they're good at. Writing interesting character dialogue and backstory isn't their forte.

It kinda sounds like they’re attempting to LA remake The Lion King 1 and 1/2 in a sense, help us all

I get that vibe from this too. The plot snippets reek of something that would have been a direct-to-VHS release 30 years ago.

Apologies for quoting a month-old comment. I didn't check the date.

  3. Founders Day

    1/20 - 7:15 PM

    Trailers:

    Imaginary

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

    Abigail

Debated putting this in here for a couple of days because my story is a little bizarre. Nobody at the theater knew what I was talking about when I first tried to buy a ticket for it. This movie was in their theater, and they didn't know it was there. They stuck it in a room with less than 60 seats. I was the only guy there. Nobody knows this movie exists. Not even Wikipedia, or the theater nearest to me that actually had the damn movie.

It's  not just a Hollywood problem It's a Godzilla problem in general specifically when more then one monster is involved, I can honestly say I can't think of one Godzilla vs film where the human stuff is just as interesting as the monster stuff, even the director of minus one recent said he would have a difficult time making a human story good if there's more then one monster as the human characters would have significantly less personal connection with Godzilla. It probably why GvK and GxK mostly follows Kong since he's allowed To have a personal connection to at least one or 2 human characters

I would agree, but there are some films that were able to balance human character drama effectively with the monster action before Godzilla Minus One even existed.

Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ebirah (a.k.a. vs. The Sea Monster), Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, and Terror of Mechagodzilla all come to mind. It can be done, but that requires prioritization of such writing. Spectacle is the driving point of these films, so any human characters will be mouthpieces to drive the plot forward and nothing more.

from a GA and to a lesser extent critics perspective the problem with KOTM is the same problem with 2014 but worse is the fact the human story is nowhere near interesting enough to take screen time away from the most entertaining part of the movie which where the monsters, probably why GvK was better received because they knew the human stuff written for the film was not interesting enough to have long breaks between monster action (there's like 20-30 minutes of human stuff cut from the final film)  so they cut the film to just so the human stuff did it's job to move the plot forward

It's also arguably the closest to being a "traditional" Godzilla film. There are lulls in the action with exposition to explain just what Ghidorah and certain other creatures are. The difference is in what you said: Nobody cares about the human characters. It's in stark contrast to how I feel about the best Showa films, which did take the time to include human characters that made me root for them.

Hollywood has yet to tell a compelling Godzilla story with characters that make me feel that way and I've long accepted that we're not going to get one that does.

Problem is nobody but the hard core Spidey fans care about these  really obscure charecters in the Spidey Verse. You have to make a r eally good movie to have a chance when you do that.

Venom did well becuase he has GA name recognition but Madame Web? Forget about it.

I think Kraven the Hunter is more likely to get eyes on screens than this movie and it isn't just because Kraven is a better known comic villain.

This film really feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be based on the marketing we've gotten thus far. Am I the only one getting that vibe?

This franchise seems to have given up any pretense of being anything more than big dumb monster brawls after KotM didn’t work out so well, at least on the movie side of things. I haven’t watched the Monarch TV show, so maybe that’s a different story.

GvK was undemanding schlock that didn’t try to hide it, and it worked out pretty well for Legendary and WB, so it’s no surprise that this is evidently trying to give people more of the same.

KotM seemed to try to develop something with their characters, but it didn't work. That movie was also packed with three different monsters other than Godzilla himself along with every other original creation that was thrown in.

I think expecting anything more than a mindless escape at this point would be a questionable decision. Any hope of character development would likely come from Kong himself and nobody else.

I watched the greatest Godzilla movie ever with -1 last year, now I'm ready for what I predict to be a disappointment with G×K.

Going from -1 to GxK will be major whiplash. Not releasing -1 on video the day G×K releases would be a missed opportunity at cross promotion.

It's probably been said before, but -1 was made with the intent of having a specific message with character building and meaningful storytelling. Expecting anything of the sort from GxK is like asking for stimulating discourse in a MMA event. What you're going to get is a movie mostly focusing on spectacle, i.e. monsters beating each other's brains out of each other with minimal human character development.

Not defending the choice at all, as I feel these films could be better, but I'm there for the ride regardless.
