  1. None of the video games movie so far have been great mainly due to inability to construct a solid plot. The best of the bunch is easily Angry Birds 2 tbh and that was because it was a funny and at best was a high 3/5.
  2. I’m expecting a fun time, nothing more nothing less. C-tier Dreamworks was the goal and that’s just about what the reviews were indicating. I got tickets Friday to see with the family and am positive I’ll likely like it and yeah the fans and families will dig it, but I also want more than just Mario action. I want to fall in love with this Mario’s world and characters not just be reminded Mario is cool and I had fun with it as a kid. I was hopeful maybe Illumination would’ve kicked it up a notch. Shrek didn’t have to be a movie with a strong romance and great characters, The Lego Movie could just focus on Lego action, and SpiderVerse could’ve just been another Spider-Man movie. The Peanuts Movie may not have had much depth or themes but did good work at making you root for Charlie Brown. Wanting more doesn’t mean sacrificing authenticity. Hell, even the Teen Titans Go! Movie or Angry Birds 2 which isn’t groundbreaking by any means still managed to work with a damn funny script.
  3. I mean the game fan in me is happy but the movie fan in me wants a good film too. Not expecting Pixar or SpiderVerse but I want solid character work and development first and foremost even if it means deviation. I want a Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or The Lego Movie over a Minions for example.
  4. I’m thinking 140-160m. Don’t think it’s a good start though but can rebound upon reviews and as days go on. I do think the reception of Phase 4 caught up with it could be reason for lower than expected presales but could also be indicative of maybe it being more GA friendly.
  5. Those examples you used had Christmas, holidays and weak competition to fall back on. But I agree otherwise.
  6. Yeah, I’m more optimistic on this guy compared to Waldron or even Loveness as despite the latter doing comics, Jin has had experience showrunning and producing with Beef having strong buzz, as well as having worked with the director and Yuen before.
  7. I don’t think they lack the ability but rather for the most part they don’t really want to. I think Nintendo knew that going in. They wouldn’t make a bad or truly great film to upset the fans but something just fun and breezy family fluff. Illumination would do just that and not change anything about the Mario brand. The main reason they didn’t do Sony was because they didn’t want to share game rights and specifically stated many times, they were focused on the Mario brand.
  8. I mean I suspect the GA will love it as Illumination has perfected making digestible family films and I suspect Mario will be similar. Just not expecting much outside of harmless family fun or glowing reviews.
  9. With Flash opening the same day as Elemental, this being a week before Wish, Elio and KFP4 a week apart and Wicked opening the same day as Disney’s 2024 movie, Chapek ruined the event status of their animations in just two years and will now have to re-earn their big name as studios are no longer scared to try to bully them out of spots.
  10. Figured they go with this once I heard the plot and was hinted at in the trailer. However, I think showing more of it would help but it’d probably strike a bit too close to Zootopia.
  11. They really decided to make the singing killed my grandma thing a major plot point of this.
  12. On one hand, I do like a lot of the ideas for this movie even if it is looking to be a Psuedo-Hulk sequel and am excited to see more of Sam Wilson Captain America. On the other hand, I disliked TFATWS because I don’t think Spellman was able to handle the ideas of a Black Captain America and am leery of trusting him further.
