i am more worried about europe if anything...but thanfully the reception is very strong there for shang so...
Yeah might see a dip in Europe next week.
I don’t think Dune is releasing in all European countries, at least not the UK and Ireland. So should stay solid there at least.

10.7 Sunday for SC? 30% drop. I know some were thinking 35%.
Possible that’s a bit high?
-
Around 70m globally this weekend for Shang Chi is fantastic!

Don’t forget merchandise.
Morris plushies sales will cover any losses for Shang Chi.I tried to get one today but they were sold out lol.

What’s everyone’s predictions for Saturday after getting the Friday number?
14m+ maybe?
-
Still learning a lot about box office but does anyone think the NFL on Sunday will have any effect on the gross for that day?

Why is Dr Strange 2 releasing in March end, just 41 days away from Thor 4. I thought it may be Good Friday, but no. Better release would have been Mid Feb.
Yeah it’s ridiculous.
COVID really messed up the schedule and they can’t move it forward because the movie probably needs that time in post.
-
I can’t wait for the X-Men’s arrival in the MCU. I need them now! lol

Marvel is a brand. The sub IPs keep it fresh. we are getting 4-5 movies a year but barring spider-man there is more than 4 years diff in sequels for individual franchises.
Okay that’s fair.
I’m not complaining though, I love what the MCU is. I just hope they keep changing it up and keep it fresh for audiences like you said.

Encanto thing makes sense.
Luca and Soul were massive hits for Disney+. They were everywhere.
Disney might make it an annual thing, having an animated movie in time for Christmas on the service as a “gift”.

After Shang Chi's success, I expect that October date will move up to Labor Day Weekend - 2023.
Yeah that’s a possibility.
However I’m thinking the Oct 6 film is Blade and they want it to play over Halloween.
-
In 2023, Marvel is releasing one film on Oct 6 and another on Nov 10.
Obviously the schedule changed because of COVID but this is just crazy.
Can you imagine Shang Chi and Eternals that close? lol
-
It seems too late now for it to make an opening on Sep 17th.
I would say 23th Sep is probably a good date but if it doesn’t make that, then I don’t know. Venom and No Time to Die are coming. A lot of big Chinese films too.
It really only has 45 days until piracy

Its a combination of many things, including more limited showings than in years past. Remember as well that we have never, even in good times, had a film playing at this level until the 2nd or 3rd weekend of September. Its all a bit different on top of the Covid issues.
That said, its hold have been in keeping with past behaviors so a lot will as usual just depend on the days to come.
We as a forum tend to live on the highs and lows and when a film runs in the middle - or appears to - it can cause that angst that sometimes arises. Personally, I find the 15% a tad rough (higher end of possibilities) but its actually better than what the tracking suggested last night.
Okay cool thanks for that.
I’m still a bit new here and have a lot to learn.

Nope, Forbes was barely off - less than 100k. You need to understand the difference in box office from say 2 weeks ago before school and football to now.
The leggy hopes of 1 poster (the 260m) are not the norm even before covid. Shang-Chi is doing well and held well this week. Anything over 30m this weekend is a win considering its opening was highly inflated with the holiday and it doesnt have the spillover of say Black Panther which was doing more than double the business overall.
Yeah that’s true.
However I did think Shang Chi would have a bit stronger weekdays considering we all assumed strong WOM.
However maybe there still is that percentage of people not comfortable going to theatres still that I’m not factoring in here too.
-
I like Marvel but FIVE films in 2023?!
That is…a lot lol. Along with the Disney plus shows, there is gonna be some major burnout with fans and critics.
‘Too much a good thing’ comes to mind here.

They're fine coming off a $75m w/e but I don't see how it's going to hit the target that's been tossed around - $260m+ (and pass TWS) with them
Getting passed that 200m domestic mark is probably a good target from now on for this film.
It’s probably the combination of the pandemic and MCU becoming that bit more front loaded.
-
Even lower again from Forbes earlier. Are they not getting accurate info and posting guesses?
Its not too bad but the weekdays haven’t been that impressive unfortunately. Hopefully it has some good weekend dumps. Maybe it’s not breaking out with strong WOM like I thought.
-
Around 8.3m is ok but I think it puts up the possibility of going just under 30m.
Gonna need a big Saturday bump.
-
According to Scott Mendelson at Forbes, Shang Chi earned $4.05m on Thursday.
They did get it a bit wrong the other day, so it could change.

shang and eternals were always uncertain...and still are (hopefully though they get released there) , as for bw if what @Gavin Feng holds true then in that case disney was the one who shit the bed
Yeah the Black Widow issues make sense.
Marvel makes their movies for a global audience. Aside from Deadpool, they won’t do something like Joker and other movies like that will get banned in some countries.I just think from a business perspective, these big budget commercial movies not getting a Chinese release to help boost that box office will annoy Marvel.

Honestly think Marvel will be pissed if 3 MCU films don’t get a release in China.
Feige didn’t do that interview for nothing lol.
