Possibly working against Eternals will be that critics will have higher expectations for it, due to who is behind the camera.  I know I do.

I’m fully expecting it to be up there with the best comic book movies ever made. Unrealistic? Maybe. But this one feels like it’s going for something special.

I guess what I’m saying is that if you’re on RT watch, expect it to appear more divisive because critics will judge it on Zhao’s level of quality, rather than standard MCU.

Sadly, as most of the mainstream legitimately only think a movie can be good if over a certain high percentage, it could definitely be a factor in how it does.

Yes totally agree with this and is what I was trying to say. This film will be judged differently.

... um based on what i am seeing....majority LOVED the last trailer...

I thought the last trailer was great too.

I just feel people are waiting for Marvel to trip and Eternals could be the one.

However, Eternals does look different to typical MCU film. There’s a practical, sci-fi feel to it, which I think will work in its favour.

  3. I’m looking forward to Eternals but I’m worried it could be MCU’s first big misfire critically.

I know it’s directed by Chloe Zhao but the reaction to it from some media people I follow just seems like ‘This looks bad’.

Obviously I could be wrong but people labelling this as a ‘Oscar contender’ because of Zhao could really be hurting it.

    4.3M (-7%)

    9.5M (+120%)

    14.3M (+50%)

    9M (-37%)

    32.8M Weekend, 56% drop

Sounds about right. A better Friday increase could get this into a low-50s drop, but it's probably not dropping sub-50%.

Hmm not great but I suppose in these times it’s pretty decent.

Might even go lower or we might be surprised. Let’s see, could be a big weekend for the Eternals release strategy.

  5. For fun, I am just comparing Shang Chi’s run to the other two biggest September releases (It 1 and 2).

Obviously it way behind the 1st It but performing pretty closely to It 2. Actually just grossed 100k more today than It 2 did in Sep 2019 with no pandemic and other circumstances.

I am not sure Shang Chi Will increase 220% like It 2 did on its 2nd Friday though lol. Maybe it will, fingers crossed. WOM seems fairly strong.

     Not only smaller movies:

    CM

    WW with China = 1,128,462,972

    WW without China = 1,128,462,972 - 154,070,663 = 974,392.309

Bye bye 1B. Not so impressive anymore, eh?

    CW aka Avengers 2.5

    WW with China = 1,153,337,496

    WW without China = 1,153,337,496 - 180.794,517 = 972,542,979

Oops, they did it again. No 1B for the biggest team up since AoU.

Far From Home would also miss 1B without China.

It isn't just on Marvel side. Aquaman would kiss over 1B goodbye without almost 292M from China. Fate of the Furious wouldn't crack it either without almost 393M from China.

In other words, there are very few movies that crack 1B w/o China (including if you subtracted China gross)

    Yes very true.

Just makes Joker run more impressive being R rated, no China and no 3D. I don’t think we will see a lot of films replicate that for a long time. Maybe the Batman? If it’s quite similar in vain to Joker, that audience will definitely come back.

I mean budget wise Ant-man was already a success without China, not impressive numbers but still good, Marvel can live without it, you don't need a billion to be a success.

Let alone that 90% of the next marvel movies are crossover or hyped sequels with a bunch of heroes.

    Yes very true.

I suppose Joker is a bit of an anomaly. Just an amazing box office run for a single character.

  8. The Chinese box office does help boost the international numbers for smaller films like Ant Man and Cap America to make it look more impressive. Marvel would be disappointed to lose that market and I guess there is nothing they can do.

Unless they have a breakout hit like Joker, a lot of Marvel films (aside from Avengers) would struggle to cross a billion without it.

Eternals seems in a better stop to be honest, doesn't look there is a problem with the movie itself in China, only with Zhao, but this is way easier to solve (despite being also ridiculous).

Let's see how it goes, but if starts another unnecessary doom and gloom surrounding it, i wouldn't care with another banned movie, i doubt Eternals need China to be a success too.

I believe Eternals will feature Marvels first LGBT superhero.

After what was just posted, could it be banned because of that?

China's whole entertainment industry is being regulated to death right now. They've literally just banned 'effeminate men' on tv whatever the heck that means. They already banned tattoos, headscarves, and recently started blurring out nipples on topless men on tv. They're also started cracking down hard on fandoms and fanclubs. The way it's going I won't be surprised if they just banned most of Hollywood movies going forward.

    Wow really?

That is crazy. Why are they getting so strict now?

  11. 2 minutes ago, RRA said:

Considering how some people over there were finding ways to not want that movie over there as it was, they would’ve found something else if not this. Did anybody around here really expect this to get released there?

On the bright side SC now has “banned in China” street cred.

    Haha that’s very true.

However Feige did do that big Chinese interview where he talked about Fu Manchu and other potential problematic things about the movie.

Its clear Marvel care about the Chinese market and seeing two films banned (and probably another with Eternals), won’t make them happy.

  12. The film also earned $19.3 million on Monday. That’s five times what Halloween earned ($4.2 million) on Labor Day 2007. It’s 2.7x the $6.9 million day-four and $7.2 million day-four grosses of F9 and Black Widow. It’s more than double the $9.4 million Memorial Day Monday of A Quiet Place part II and almost double the over/under $11 million holiday Monday grosses of Bad Boys for Life and Sonic the Hedgehog in early 2020. Its Monday gross that’s almost tied with the film’s pure Friday gross ($29.6 million minus $8.8 million in Thursday previews) while pushing the film’s global cume over $150 million. It puts Shang-Chi’s four-day debut right in line with the Fri-Sun debuts of some of the MCU’s biggest breakout hits, even when adjusted for inflation.

  13. I agree with what people are saying with the third act stuff. It’s clear Destin Cretton didn’t really think outside the box with the finale. The CGI is not perfect.

However I think the third act sort of works because the first two acts feel so small in scope and then all of a sudden you’re being taken to this world with dragons and giant lions. It’s just cool to see that world building and Marvel leaning into fantasy.

Comparing it to the terrible third act of Black Widow, this is at least more fun and refreshing for a marvel movie.

So you guys were into the invincible CGI Bat monsters? That worked for you?

I thought the evil dragon looked alright but it’s little soul eating minions looked pretty bad.

It didn’t take him out of the movie but they could of at least had a cooler design instead of looking like naked bats.

  15. I thought the dragon Shang Chi was riding looked great coming out of the water and throughout the 3rd act.

The evil dragons CGI was pretty good but it’s design was less pleasing to the eye. I know it was meant to be some love craftian design but it looked like a weird dragon octopus.

The fights between the dragons were a bit messy and hard to follow. Also could have used a bit more colour. However its still equally impressive because it honestly could have looked way worse than it did.

Absolutely not. The opening title card even says Dune: Part One. I think if they'd saved it for the end (like in It: Chapter One) audiences might have revolted at the cut to black.

That’s crazy. I have no idea how audiences are gonna respond to this lol.

However I think after the HBO Max thing, it covers the potential losses at the box office and we will get a sequel.

It is 10000% Dune: Part One.

Which is why they should have already filmed Dune: Part II. It will be so stupid if it doesn't get greenlit, and the film will only live as a potential of what the second film could have brung.

My only major overall issue with the film (again, I still really liked it!) is that the entire 2:55 seems like set up. Set up for something that might not even come to fruition. 😕

    Thanks for responding!

That’s what worries me a little. Hopefully audiences respond to it but kicking off a potential film franchise with a lot of set up in the first instalment is risky.

It’s getting a lot of comparisons to Lord of the Rings for that exact reason but LOTR is a lot more accessible and fantastical than something like Dune.
