We've seen with the likes of Ryan Kavanaugh and Relativity, how financiers who invest in movies decide that they should be making films and start making mistakes. At least Megan Ellison is pretty sensible and goes finances films which deserve a wider audience rather than big blockbusters. I wonder if Wanda saw Tull as a liability hence why he was given the boot, I would not be surprised will cut ties with Legendary once the output deal expires.

That's very good for La La Land and Split, wonder how Sing did in previews?

I think with the amount of new releases and holdovers, £7m might be tricky though not impossible. It'll be interesting how it holds especially with Lego Batman coming in two weeks. Most big animated films released in the January/February period have done £20m+ only The Lego Movie broke £30m which I'm not expecting for either Sing or Lego Batman but £20-25m for both seems doable

I think an opening similar to Trolls is doable, its the first kids movie in ages so families will be looking for a new film to watch.

I imagine it'll be top 3, La La Land will remain number 1 though. I think Lion should do decently as well. I expect Sing previews will do well this weekend, I'm not sure how it'll do long term as The Lego Batman Movie is opening in previews just two weeks later.

I wonder if Paramount thought it could be like the Taken franchise, a modest domestic performer and a solid OS total. It'll likely won't lose money but a fourth film is unlikely. The budget was $85m which seems expensive but i guess Vin took $20m. M.Night is on a roll with Split, going back to lower budget films have rejuvenated him as a director. I wonder if he'll attempt to do bigger projects or if he'll stick with lower budget films for the time being

Shazam! | April 5, 2019 | 21st Most Profitable Film of 2019
Jonwo replied to Neo's topic in Box Office Discussion
I don't know if Black Adam could work as a solo film, I suspect a spin-off will be dependent on how Shazam is received. I imagine WB won't move up Shazam as they already have Fantastic Beasts II plus Aquaman is only a month before. -
In regard to Manchester by the Sea, Amazon only has domestic distribution with Roadside, it was also acquired by other foreign distributors such as Studiocanal so in theory the producers and financiers may have already made a profit beforehand. It's true for films by Lionsgate/Summit such as La La Land, Lionsgate don't distribute apart from domestic and U.K. so they sell to distributors who buy their slate for that year so the budget for a film is usually recouped or they make a bit of profit but on the flip did if they have a big hit, they won't see any of that OS money. The most infamous case was The Golden Compass which made $300m OS compared to $70m domestic but New Line never saw any of the OS money which is the main reason it folded into Warner Bros

It's interesting how censorship differs in each country, the BBFC for example have rated many PG-13 films like Suicide Squad as 15 due to violence whereas they passed This Means War uncut at 12A whereas Fox had to cut some of the jokes to make it PG-13. MIB3 was PG in the UK even though it had the word shit in it. The King's Speech R rating never made much sense considering the swearing was in context and not used maliciously.

Lionsgate/Summit have a winner apart from their YA franchises, horror and things like Red. It would be Summit's first Oscar win since The Hurt Locker and Lionsgate's first since Crash. The film is already going to be profitable for Lionsgate just from domestic, OS is a bit complicated as Summit and Lionsgate are distributed by local distributors apart from UK but I assume they've already recouped the budget from presales and everything from domestic and UK is gravy.

Manchester by the Sea had a really strong PTA. The Assassin's Creed drop is pretty bad as well

Kingston has been in the top twelve before, Vue West End gets a rare number 1 entry. Usually it's OLS or CWLS. Vue Westfield London always a consistent performer usually in the top 3 or five whereas the one in Stratford doesn't do nearly as well. Vue Islington seems to do quite well too, maybe it's the areas they are in. BFI IMAX is still doing well with Rogue One, to still be in the top five with a holdover is impressive.

I think Affleck just needs a break, I suspect he's overworked himself in the last year with the promotions for BvS, filming Justice League, promoting The Accountant and editing and promoting Live by Night. I think he could handle the bad reviews for BvS and The Accountant since he's only one aspect of the process but something like Live by Night where he's director, actor and producer, the reviews must have hurt a lot more.

Patriot's Day will likely have decent legs but it's going to be a tough sell OS. Luckily Lionsgate is only distributing for CBS Films and I suspect they've already made the budget back from selling the distribution rights like they do with all Lionsgate films so they only have to worry about domestic and UK where they do market and distribute the film.

I think Manchester by the Sea expands next week or the week after. I imagine Moana should be fine until Lego Batman previews, that'll be taking a good chunk of screens
