Can we call Civil War a Cap movie yet or do we need to wait another year to confirm that "The Avengers" brand is on a whole other level? Plenty of folks here were completely sure IW would decrease from CW "because A2 and A2.5 kept decreasing", some of them are still here claiming that it will have poor legs "because Civil War!!!1!!1"

Does BP still have a chance to outgross The Avengers?

Disney just reached #1 on the studios chart (thanks to its first movie of the year) Given how Mary Poppins is going to do massive numbers next January and Episode IX will likely do the same the year after, I believe Disney could be the #1 studio until January 2021, and that's without anything from Fox. The others don't really stand a chance.

This movie doesn't really have a flaw but it felt really uninteresting to me. I absolutely loved the cast, MBJ is probably my favorite villain now, I haven't seen praise for Angela, why? I think she nailed her scenes (but so did everyone)... but the plot was really meh and predictable. Btw, I don't think the CGI is that bad but it certainly looks like the movie is ahead of its time (as in, it would be really fucking expensive to perfectly pull the visuals for the whole movie). The fight scenes are laughable tbh. That's the only thing that can objectively be criticized IMO. Now, I hate the way Marvel kills all their villains. It isn't a coincidence that the only villain that has appeared in more than one movie is their best. I hope they at least do Baron Mordo justice.

Since (for some reason) Shape of Water is considered horror, this completed a massive year for the genre. Two big players at the Oscars and a huge box office. Hopefully studios learn the right lessons.

OS audiences will not show up for an 8th episode of a saga they don't care about. TFA had a curiosity factor, and after that movie was basically a homage to ANH (a movie that Asia / LA hasn't seen or they don't care about) why would they show up again? Y'all need to remember that watching the OT now (or even when the prequels were released) isn't really that impressive or groundbreaking. Most of these markets were non-existent or really small, while the markets mentioned in this thread (UK, Germany, Japan) were already huge, so if you leave out the OT "amazing-ness"... What's the appeal? The prequels? TFA (which heavily relies on nostalgia)? I'm sure Disney will leave the Skywalkers behind and give SW a fresh new start. -
You're talking like they had other choice. You know what happened when Fox thought they could make money on a PG-13 Wolverine? Origins happened. They produced 2 low-budget R-rated movies (compare the budgets to Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix) and suddenly they're the saviours of the industry (when in reality they were as successful because Fox didn't interfere with them, everyone knows that, even the current revisionists)

They already said they'll keep the Rated R/Searchlight films, so the whole "artistic doomsday" is on hold until they actually do something. They need those kind of movies for streaming. I wonder if they'll use Fox to make horror movies, though. Universal has BH and WB has The conjuring, both of which have been highly profitable and streaming-friendly. Now, the ones that should worry are theaters and Netflix. This is basically the biggest player in town saying "Streaming is the future and theaters are done"

Disney is not trying to become a monopoly lol. They're just trying to stay relevant, everyone knows that the industry is changing and that streaming will become the main platform (just like it happened in the music industry). They need to take advantage of Netflix lack of movie success so they don't end up like Apple losing to Spotify (on music revenue, obviously)

Nice increase for Thor. DS fell 51% last year, perhaps Thor can hold better this weekend. Perhaps the lack of previews for new releases helped all films.
-
He did include Home video & TV revenue. Also, don't know how reliable that is but he estimated $100m annual profit (off $1b merchandising sales) so they'd need to sell double of what they did last year (already boosted by BvS) to break even on that "$100m loss". I know most of it is definitely reaching but it illustrates the point that they'll barely make profit (if any) of a fucking Justice League movie while SH movies are at their peak.
-
Exactly. Fanboys were screaming that WB wasn't worried because BvS still made +$100m profit, but what are they gonna say now that it costed +$600m (box-office only, it has gone from conservative $1.3b to optimistic $700m) for Justice League and a complete re-structuring of the whole DC brand (outside WW ofc) or are we still pretending the shitload of movies they've announced are still happening? They'd be nuts to even consider going forward with SS2.
