You can't care if you don't know/didn't watch. People read to much into this but it's really just about the movie being popular and therefore snubs affecting more people than snubs for barely seen movies or flops. No one was crying over Robbie missing for Babylon. -

Oppenheimer can't get ROTK treatment aka clean sweep because at least Supporting Actress is wrapped up (Randolph from The Holdovers). Actor is between Giamatti (The Holdovers) and Murphy with Giamatti having more televised precursor wins so far (GG Comedy and CC). Adapted Script is up in the air but most predict either Barbie to be a consolation for Gerwig or American Fiction to take it. So it won't go 13/13 at least because of Randolph. -
Lots of expansions which makes sense in the dead month.

The irony is, Margot and Greta Lee very likely vote for those classic baits too when they are not competing for the prize (in which case they vote for themselves). -

Maestro is about Bernstein. It needed to be a total critical bust not to get in. Heck, critical bust Blonde got DeArmas in cause she played MM. Biopics have always been and always will be in AMPAS wheelhouse. Always. The only bias here is that one - love for biopics. TCP's biggest problem was being a remake of an iconic movie with iconic performances. As such, it needed to be just as good or better than the original. It was neither. And then it flopped. And then at least one cast member trashed the production. Why would you vote for a middling movie that its cast didn't enjoy making? If Nolan was snubbed outrage would be even worse. It was just as bad when Villeneuve was snubbed. The only difference is that in this case the outragers appeal to emotion with accusations of sexism while in Villeneuve and Nolan case they had to stick with the absurdity of denying such achievements their dues. So yes, social media lives for outrage and every awards season has it cause someone gets left out. It's just about what context will be given to rile up as many people as possible. I honestly have a feeling that some people just want to be outraged all the time and that they are currently happier that snubs happened so that they could go on with their conspiracy theories about how and why it happened. It's been 20 years since a true blockbuster won Picture. So yes, give it to the behemoth. -

There's something preventing them - they thought others did a better job. Nobody votes as a group that gathers and then goes OK so we put X at #1 and Y at #5, etc. People vote individually but shared taste produces similar votes. And depending how many people who share the same taste vote vs other people who share the same taste, someone swims, someone sinks. There's a reason why the dreaded Middlebrow Oscar Bait Biopic always gets nominated - there are many voters to whom that kind of movie appeals. There's a reason why many acting wins are for historical figures - acting branch and actors in general think that's the height of acting. Same goes for illness/disability (with or without acting in prosthetics). OTOH, they hate mo'cap so actors in mo'cap don't get nominated while actors in fatsuits and fake noses win. And as long as they add membership with that mindset, they will vote the same way. Diversity (gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexuality) does not automatically mean diversity of tastes. Sci fi is yet to win Best Picture so when it comes to genre diversity not much changed. -

Sexist men to Gerwig and Robbie: "Your movie wasn't feminist enough. Do better." Point is, sexism argument doesn't stand if Poor Things is more feminist and such should have turned off sexists. So the reason for snubs is what @ThomasNicole explained. The movie didn't play well with foreign voters (also see BAFTA flop where Gerwig and movie missed) whose % is growing rapidly and thus changing the nomination landscape such as inclusion of more foreign movies in Top 10. And Poor Things as very artsy movie is closer to foreign voters sensibilities than than something like Barbie or other blockbuster that they consider lightweight or too American. They are picked from film-makers not regular audience hence more highbrow tastes. -

Giamatti is one of 2 actors in competition to win. Robbie never won anything. It was always between Stone and Gladstone. Therefore, Robbie was vulnerable to snub like other also-runs. Do people even know how voters vote? It isn't a group conspiracy it's one person going through one category list and ranking based on who they liked the most, and then moving to another category. I get that Internet is trying to make this about sexism (if Robbie missed why didn't Giamatti from different category or Gosling from different category) but it doesn't work that way. Robbie didn't compete against men, she competed against women and 5 were ranked above her. You can make the sexism case about Gerwig snub since the category is mixed even though most Directors vote for what they like not to sabotage female directors, but in separate categories such as acting that simply isn't possible. Just because fans view movies as a whole and think Gosling and Ferrera shouldn't be nominated if Robbie isn't since she is the movie, voters only have their ballots where Robbie isn't pit against her cast mates but against female competitors from other movies. If you want direct comeptition from the same movie, that was Ruffalo and Dafoe in Supporting. Not Ruffalo and Stone, 2 different categories. Internet is making an issue where there's none. And this si from Robbie fan. Do I think she was amazing? Yes. Am I too surprised that a doll lost to a veteran who suffered for art (swimming) and played historical figure and is one of the most connected people in the industry, a long suffering wife of a famous hsitorical figure, a long suffering wife whose actress has made a historical nomionation and a character who is so unique and performance hailed so brave for going the disatnce physically and otherwise? No, not really. They are AMPAS comfort zone. Thank you! Also, before people claim what was frontrunner and what wasn't they should check the list of winners through the season. And you won't see Barbie sitting high in any category. It's actually Gosling who racked up the most wins for the movie. -

If Barbie ARGO's a Picture win than both Gerwig and Robbie win as producers. -

he too thirsty. people don't like the smell of desperation. AMPAS can't kick the historical icon habit so he got in but that's not enough for a win especailly when your competition is amiable (Giamatti) or chill (Murphy) without signs of thrist. Ofc everyone wants it but BCoop is screaming about it. -

No it wasn't. Oppenheimer and Nolan have been frontrunners throughout the season. They lined up more critical awards than several movies combined and then precursors (GG, CC). Gladstone seemed like the frontrunner until it became obvious it was Stone since Venice. Melton was leading critics awards and then the tite turned in RDJs favor. Randolph was so dominant throughout that everyone else was just fighting for 2-5 spots. It's Original script where Barbie and Holdovers had 50/50 shot but Anatomy spoiled it with GG win. It was never the frontrunner. -

Apples and oranges. Barbie is a comedy and sadly comedies always struggle to be taken seriously. They nominated a woman director for a drama. So that says it all. Also, frontrunners rarely miss. Barbie was no a frontrunner in any category but Song. Also because it's a comedy. Robbie was fantastic in a difficult role. The snub is awful but I'll repeat it again if you ain't in it to win it you are not safe. That was Gerwig problem too. She didn't miss in Script despite category change cause the script was competitive to win not a frontrunner but one of 3 posisbilities in Original. -

Point is, nobody is gonna vote like this: Oh gee I don't think Robbie is Top 5 in Actress so I can't put Gosling in Top 5 in Supporting Actor cause bad optics and Ferrera in top 5 in Supporting Actress cause it makes no sense without Robbie. They vote by category. If they liked Bening more they liked her more. Or maybe Bening has more friends. Or whatever. There's nothing to read into. Nominees always stump for their snubbed team mates especially if snubs are huge. It's nothing new. Heck, I remember quite a few industry people lampooning Villeneuve snub as "so Dune directed itself?" Director snubs are always big topic. -

Re: Blunt vs Ferrera. Many fans felt Blunt should have been nominated by now. No one felt that way about Ferrera whose career highlight was Ugly Betty (she won Comedy Emmy I think) yet the world still watches the Columbian original not her version. So not much of a cultural impact. As someone already said, Blunt fans take what they can get. Also, Blunt nom wasn't followed by Murphy snub which is the main point of Ferrera outrage. Without that, her nom would be shrugged off as coattail as usual (which is what Blunt is too). But to be fair, she didn't compete against Robbie but her category mates so it isn't like she kicked out Robbie. It's just very unusual that a cast member who was tanking with critics and precursors makes the cut while the one that was succeeding and was the anchor of the movie didn't. usually the weak one coattails the strong one so both make it. Re: Gosling in Robbie out. Gosling was in easier category to get in (same Ferrera) and he was never going to miss. The vunerable one have always been Ruffalo and DaFoe cause of possible vote split and we saw quite a rollercoaster with those 2 (1 gets in, the other gets in, both get in, neither gets in, 1 gets in after all). Robbie was in tougher category and she wasn't the frontrunner or challenger. So like Amy Adams in Arrival, she hit all precursors but was kicked out by a passion pick (Bening or Huller since Stone, Gladstone and Mulligan were locked). But most importantly, as explained in Ferrera case, voters vote by category. So Gosling vs his category mates not Gosling vs Robbie hence why "how dare they nominate Ken and snub Barbie" doesn't work cause they ranked actors by categiory and he and Ferrera ranked in Top 5 in theirs while Robbie didn't in hers. -
Oscar nominees should have healthy jumps today and strong holds going forward at least the ones expanding (Poor Things, American Fiction, Zone of Interest).

I will be happy too but same can be said of Gerwig. Barbie was considered a joke for the longest time even when many signs pointed at something special. No one else would have pulled it off. -

I think that May December got blanked in acting cause actors love historical figures and big showy performances neither of which is May December. Sad reality. Could also be the icky subject matter but preference for historical, illness/disability, histrionics, prosthetics is undeniable. -

he's not wrong about international awards reception. It suffered a big blow at BAFTA and GG kinda made fun of it when they nominated it for almost everything and then gave it wins only in Song and Boxoffice. Audience =/= voters.
