I just realized how much stuff is coming out on March 13th....like good luck, I can absolutely see Hunt beating everyone else.

Not too long ago the date had nothing on it. It seems to be where every studio is dropping something when they don't know where else to put it.

Getting the inevitable negative review of a movie everyone else will love out of the way early.

This is the kind of bullshit I hate. Completely inventing a narrative and finding a problem where there is none. Yeah, there's some shitty dudes out there, but that comment is gaslighting at its fucking finest.

Pixar's track record in terms of critical acclaim is still remarkable to me (and in combination with their overall box office success). Now looking like 21 out of 22 films with a positive critical reception, and 20 of them 'Certified Fresh' on RT. I'm curious to see how Onward does at the box office.

Pixar Movie RT Scores and Multipliers

    90%+ RT Score Class

    Toy Story — 100% (9.0 rating) — 6.58 (using 3-day), 4.91 (using 5-day)

    Toy Story 2 — 100% (8.7 rating) — 4.28 (using first wide weekend)

    Finding Nemo — 99% (8.7 rating) — 4.83

    Toy Story 3 — 98% (8.9 rating) — 3.76

    Inside Out — 98% (8.9 rating) — 3.94

The Toy Story franchise is especially remarkable! What a run! I also like how the first film of that franchise was Pixar's first film, period. It's quite fitting. Nothing says Pixar like Toy Story.

Gavin O'Connor is a wildly inconsistent director and all of his movies are filled with narrative cliches but when they work, they REALLY work.

I hope this is something close to Warrior and Miracle.

Yeah I really hope this one works. People struggling with debilitating issues like addiction and then climbing out of it, especially when it's through community, is a subject that never gets old for a lot of people (likely because many people can relate to it, whether it's substance addiction, emotional/mental issues etc.) and it's obviously even more powerful when the filmmakers nail it.

Affleck looks like he gives a good performance in this. My girlfriend and I are actually planning on a double feature on Saturday the 7th of Onward and this. Hopefully neither disappoints!

  5. I don't think this will have a run like I Can Only Imagine, but does anyone think this will benefit from that run and have a bigger opening with strong legs? I'm trying to remember if there was any actual hype for Imagine or if it kind of took off after the opening. It did have a pretty strong opening so I guess there was already some hype there.

Reasons that is a bad poster:

The underlying image is simultaneously blurry and grainy.

The title's placement is very random. Not centered, not in a corner, it feels like the designer had no idea where to put it. It doesn't even align with Bond's placement in the frame. If the logo were a smidge lower and to the left, so it's basically equidistant from Bond's head and the bottom left corner, it would look better.

There's a whole inch of unused dead space on the bottom, below the car window. That's where "April" and the associated line of logos should have gone. Instead, it's placed where glass-meets-metal. There's just two much happening in that part of the poster. Those lines are also too close to the film logo. That entire area of the poster feels cramped, which is ridiculous given the inch of dead space the designer left.

The three gunshots are a bit much. The one by Bonds head, with cracked glass throughout would have sufficed. Right now, the gunshots, blurry Bond, and the cramped title/April formatting are all competing for my eyes. This doesn't feel well thought out, just thrown together.

I hope this isn't the final poster...

I don't think it is. Unless it's a small movie, or a dumped/delayed movie, final posters usually have the exact release date on them. That one just says April (early posters tend to have a vague date because the actual release date is still subject to change).

They are really turning Strange around. I didn't like the first movie or Strange. But he was good in Infinity War and now the second movie got Wanda who's one of my faves and Raimi who fans are super excited about. Papa Feige ain't playin. I read somewhere that Strange is his favorite.

Indeed, Strange is his favourite. It was said that the first movie was Feige's passion project.

I just saw the new improved Fanboy Wars thread has been locked because it degenerated into two bunches of people yelling at each other over politics.

Same thing they locked the orginal fanboys war thread over.

It is to make one laugh, really.

Problem is that now without any place to contain it , it will slop over into other threads.

The consequences of not having tolerance for different voices. Not just talking about the mods, they do the best they can here, but each other as well. With zero tolerance, you're just going to have bickering matches all day, every day, trying to prove that you are right and the other is wrong.

Mixed feelings between the film itself and the wider implications of the positive start.

The film itself....eesh, not so much. Was expecting decent things from what had been said, but 4 pop culture references in the first 2 minutes got me annoyed and there were only more from there. It's a kids movie, but a Dora-like pure kids movie rather than a Pixar-esque movie for everyone. I enjoyed Dora more though as it felt more adventurous, had more humour, and didn't rely on a pop culture reference every 30 seconds. This was not for me. Not for me at all.

However James Marsden succeeding in headlining a movie, Paramount getting a win, audiences getting a family hit and Jim Carey visibly having some fun are all good things. I do hope, despite my preferences, that this does well and that the foreign market, where this seems like it's more likely to struggle, holds up.

You nailed it with this part. Even if a lot of us don't care for the film, or don't care to watch it in the first place, it's a giant success for all the people involved, not to mention the people who DO like it so I'm thrilled. As a box office fan, I just want all movies to succeed.

as if annabelle, the nun or la llorona are any good

Yeah, they're slipping a bit too. The genre in general is slipping compared to the last several years. I still think they've earned the benefit of the doubt.

At the end of the day, even if all studios start making garbage in the horror genre, at least the Conjuring films are the most bankable. There's a brand there that is bigger than Blumhouse at this point.

God, how awkward that seems. I mean, I guess it's no different than Andy Serkis as Gollum interacting with the actors in LotR and The Hobbit, but this feels....different.

Like I've said before, this is a movie I'd usually bend over backwards for, but it just seems too "fake" given the subject matter. It's so jarring watching a movie called "Call of the Wild" when everything, even the dog, is CGI and filmed on a studio lot. The trailers don't make it feel authentic and "wild" at all.

2.100 theaters. Yikes. STX doesn't give a fuck about this.

I don't know, that seems about right. This isn't a bigger horror from a bigger studio (aka something like a Conjuring universe film from WB, or even The Invisible Man from Universal). I guess it is a little low though. 2,500+ would seem a bit more normal, especially for a film like this that very likely won't make much money and is from a smaller studio.

Maybe he doesn't identify as a man and they just assumed his gender?

    Too good! :hahaha:

Anyway, Blumhouse is marketing the hell out of this. I'm seeing things everywhere: tons of TV ads, internet ads, public signs, bus stops etc. If this doesn't do well, or even if it does just average, Blumhouse might start getting a little concerned. Yes, I know because of the small budgets they'll still make money but they're making a little LESS money now, and no business likes that.
