In my observation the normal average... GA audience seldom even knows the name of an actor / actress / director / ... before he/she didn't do a lot more films / is a bit older / gets some e.g. Oscar wins / other kind of extra buzz.
I do not speak about people who actually watch genre films for being genre film...
GA still does not watch the most of the typical Sci-Fi films or fantasy films... even if it is less now than in the past.
I do not mean belonging to established franchise's films (e.g. per very successful book series or per earlier part 1, part 2,... already being on free TV)
They do start to recognise after a while, like: isnt that the actor/actress that was also in.....?
Forgot to add: I know for sure that she is not known by name by all in my media subject, but the ones who know / knew (former pupils) seem to develop to be fans fast.
I am almost certain that the GA only truly knows certain older movie stars by name. I feel that casual moviegoers today might know older film stars and directors mainly because their longevity and some of their overall pop culture presence and/or scandals that transcend the mere acting/making movies of their stardom (Hanks, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Cruise, Ford, Roberts, Jolie, Pitt, Depp), but even younger big "names" like Lawrence, Pratt, Tatum, Hart, and Saldana may still be known as "that girl/guy from that movie," unless we are talking about computer-savvy moviephiles.
ETA: I basically wrote the same thing that you did in different words.

I am seeing Lion tonight!
Hidden Figures is a lovely crowdpleaser; loved the heck out of it.
Split looks great. What are the predictions for that? Seems like the director of Signs and Sixth Sense is back (in every sense of the word).

This sounds a lot like the never-made Black Widow film.
Is this going to be a full-on action film?
Am I the only person who would like to see Lawrence star in an action film akin to the kind of stuff that Tom Cruise, Will Smith, and Angelina Jolie do?
I know that THG are technically big splashy action films, but I want to see Lawrence in something like Salt, Enemy of the State, or I, Robot.

It's worth seeing. The musical aspect plays a big part of the first 15 minutes, but after that it's mostly a regular movie.
Thank you!
So, are the musical parts of this the typical break-out-in-song-to-move-the-plot-along device, or are they using the jazz/showbiz setting in a way that there are actual musical performances (on a stage, at a concert, etc) in the film integrated as part of the plot?

Is this movie worth seeing? Here's the thing...I am not exactly a fan of musicals, and I keep hearing that LLL is too derivative. On the other hand, lots of people tell me that this film is allegedly so charming and engaging that people can't help but to fall in love with it.
I am torn and confused.

You say that "As long as you're white and male" you can have a fall from grace and come back up top. Can you give us an example of a black, hispanic, or female that did something equally as bad but was never given a chance to redeem themselves in Hollywood? Because you're making an assumption about something without providing an example to back up your claim.
Winona Ryder.
Sharon Stone.
Jennifer Lopez.
And the fact that their "sins" were not even close to what Gibson did, feels to me like Hollywood indeed tends to be more forgiving of men.
Of course, many people will chalk it up to "the fact that Gibson is infinitely more talented than those three," but I have a feeling that there's more to the story than that.

This film had gorgeous visuals and an intriguing premise that could have been developed in a more engaging fashion. I wish this had been done by a director whose narrative style were a tad less generic and I wish it had not been sold as a romantic fantasy of sorts. I don't care either way about "Jlaw" or Chris Pratt, but I feel that the movie's numbers (as tepid as they are when compared to the budget, marketing expenses, and overall expectations) only prove that there is indeed a loyal subset of moviegoers that will follow those stars no matter how good (American Hustle, Guardians of the Galaxy) or bad (Passengers, Passengers) their films are.

Absolutely.
After I wrote and sent my previous post, I realized that, without meaning to, I basically paraphrased much of what you had already written.
